1. Keeping track of available videos
2. Accumulating surcharges for detailed videos returned
3. Warning subscribers through emails when rental period expires
4. Generating monthly report for the transactions
Special respect to extended functionalities such as reports on customers with surcharges when two dynamically specifiable dates are entered

When I try to install the application from the files it produces when I follow the prompts from Build - > Publish (Visual Studio 2010) onto another computer, and then run the application on the other computer, it wont connect to the SQL database on the original computer. I've been receiving a timeout error or one which says it can't find the server.I have no idea where to start looking to fix this, both computers are running XP and 4.0 .NET Framework. The computers are linked on the same network.I think my connection string is the culprit, but I don't know how it should be set up to run on multiple computers. Here's my connection string:[code]The connection string works on the application I've installed on the original computer, but not the second computer I've tried installing the application on.My second thought was that it could be the server which is wrong, I've just used the name of my computer for that, is this correct? I thought it may be because all the computers are connected on the network.

I am looking for a VB.net book that strings me through the entire development process of an application (Prefered: WPF ,LINQ ,ADO). I have read a few books on OOP and VB.net with small code samples demonstrating the specific idea of the chapter.I think it would be really helpful if there was a book that programmed an entire application that uses a sql database (Northwind , Adventureworks).

As I am new to VB.net windows application development, I dont know where to start and what to include in code. I have read that VB.net windows applications code should have AssemblyInfo, CultureInfo, Windows Security authentication etc. But I have still not found any article, code sample or VB.net windows application sample that could give me a complete list of features that an organization level VB.net windows application must have.

I am at the stage of planning the application which will conect to a Ms SQl database, and process some data to Excel files.The problem is, that i would like to make a base pure application, without any functionality, and then add functionalities by adding some external files with code to program folder.I`not sure if what i just wrote is clear. To simplify:I would like to have an application which connects to a database, but let`s say when after 1 year, i will be in need of some more functionality, i woun`t have to change the code of whole application, but can just add a new file, and when I run the application there will be one more function to be chosen from the list.

I have an application written in ASP.NET and using EF. I want to make a copy of the live database, have my application point to the copy, and be able to run the application against it as if it is live...but making updates to the copy.
I know I can manually copy the database and manually update the web.config files...but I'm wondering if there is a better, more automated method for achieving this with VS 2010?
Also, if there is anything I need to know about setting up a live/dev version of a database while using EF4.

I want to design a application which can support two different types of databases same time e.g; when we install, it will ask which db it has to support and based on initial selection it should work with any db without changing anything in the application.In short it has to be developed keeping in mind that user may have either MS SQL or MySQL. Why would database drivers work in the development environment of VB.Net and not once the project is built and installed on the same pc? I've tried the MS ODBC Oracle driver. I've tried various ODBC datasources. All work when I am in the development environment but none once I build and install. No matter whether the configuration is Debug or Release. This is the only project having this problem. I have other apps (VB.Net) that access the same database (Oracle 9.2) with no problem.The environment variables are the same during both types of runs. The error messages vary depending upon the driver being used.

I am a self taught "developer".I use the term loosely because I only know enough to make myself dangerous. I have no theory background, and I only pick up things to get this little tool to work or make that control do what I want.
That said, I am looking for some reading material that explains some of the theory behind application development especially from a business standpoint. Really I need to understand what all of these terms that float around really talk about. Business Logic Layer, UI abstraction level and all that. Anyone got a reading list that they feel helped them understand this stuff? I know how to code stuff up so that it works. It is not pretty mostly because I don't know the elegant way of doing it, and it is not planned out very well (I also don't know how to plan an application).

I have a WPF application that uses a SQL2008 database. I have a copy of the database on a laptop and on my home machine. My application is versioned using SVN and I am obviously able go from the work laptop to the home machine and update/commit as required to ensure I am using the latest code for the application.However the database is a different story in that any change I make I create a backup and then transfer the backup to the other machine etc. This way I get the data and the changes made on each system. In order to do this the database connection using a different connectionstring and I change a setting in my app to use a different connection based on my location.
I have now started to use LINQ to SQL and DBML files in my application, and finally getting to the question, I don't know how I can change the connectionstring it uses in code so it will use the correct database in the DBML.Also, is there a better way to transfer the database so I don't need to do the backups and restores? The only reason why I have not versioned the Schema is because I am not sure how that would handle my data as this is key to my development, ie various environment settings etc are stored in the DB and brought through at runtime.

I'm trying to write a method in VB.net so that when I click a button it queries the database and returns all the values which match a textbox which is located next to the button. I have no idea how to do this, I assume in the onclick method for the button I will need to pull in the value from the textbox, connect to the database and display the results to a gridview?
