BackgroundWorker Progress On Large File Copy?

May 23, 2011

I have created a simple Backgroundworker process to copy a large file (30GB). Is there any way to report the progress of that file copy?

I'm using System.IO.File.Copy to perform the copy. I've seen a few posts/blogs that suggest comparing the bytes copied with the size of the source file but that seems like a huge overhead in this case.

BackgroundWorker To Update Progressbar And Label While Downloading Large File

Mar 10, 2012

I place some code below to simplify the process.

1) I am trying to use background worker to download a large file and update a progress bar to reflect the changes as the large 5GB file is being downloaded, and also update percentage completed to the label.text(lblInfo).

2) As I was goggling I came across some info that a web client is needed to calculate the maximum size of the file and divide by 100 and you can stream it down with the web client. Reading it is one thing, implementing it is another as I spent week trying to get it to work.

Search For Files Recursively While Updating A Progress Bar And Returning The File List To The Application From BackgroundWorker?

Dec 10, 2011

I am currently trying to develop an application which will backup large folders to a specified destination. To find all the files in the specified 'backup' directory I am using the following code.

[Code]...

I have tried putting my GetFilesRecursive function into a separate background worker to run first so I can update the GUI however I am struggling on how to return the List of found files back to my application (I get cross-threading exception) and how to update the progress bar to show the progress of the GetFileRecursive function so the user knows it is processing the list of files and has not crashed/frozen.

File Copy Progress Bar?

Alright, so in yesterday's thread, I asked for the codes to copy the contents of a directory to a separate directory. The code:

worked fine.However, I have decided that I wish to add a progress bar into the mix so that the user can see the progress of the transfer copy. So far:

VS 2010 Copy File With Progress

Feb 3, 2012

I am wanting the most efficient way to copy a file with a progress bar updating the copy percentage.

This is the standard copy code I am using:

System.IO.File.Copy(source,target)

This is very fast and efficient. However, I cannot report the copy percentage.
I have tried many functions that read and save a file by opening up the filestream and then looping while reading/writing the data. This enables me to report the progress.

Here are the functions that I am using:

Public Sub SaveBinaryFile(strFilename As String, bytesToWrite() As Byte)
Dim position As Integer = 0
Dim BufferSize As Integer = 4096

Copying Large Files And Determining File Size Mid Copy?

Oct 31, 2011

I'm using "My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyDirectory(...)" to copy large directories (30-50gb) from one mapped share folder to another. Using "FileInfo.length" to add up all file and subfolder sizes, determines the 'origin directory' size just fine. However, if I use the same method for determining the size of the 'destination directory', mid copy, it returns the full file size, despite the copy not yet being complete.I'm at a loss as to why, as this method works fine in testing, going from a local PC t

Backgroundworker Is Not Set To Report Progress?

Jan 6, 2010

I am using backgroundworker thread in my app. I also have a class in my project and am able to updated the user UI from the form, but most of my time consuming operation happens in the class so I tried to do an update like this Form1.BackgroundWorker1.ReportProgress(4, strname), but I get an error that say that the backgroundworker is not set to report progress.

I have this set in the load event for the app.Are you not able to call form items like this from a class?

VS 2010 : BackgroundWorker Does Not Report Progress

Sep 5, 2010

I have some issues with background worker progress reporting functionality. I'm implementing a progress indicator and even if I marked the backgroundworker as report progress (true), it won't report progress until it finish the job.

The code is like this:

Private Sub BackgroundWorker1_DoWork(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.DoWorkEventArgs) Handles BackgroundWorker1.DoWork
action_1()

[code]....

The result is as expected (label1 with 100 value) but only when worker finished all the steps. If I'm triggering a messagebox in ProgressChange I see two message windows at the end of DoWork handle.

[2008] Backgroundworker Progress Bar - Not Displaying Updated Status

Feb 3, 2009

Got a bit of a weird problem with a progress bar. I'm using a backgroundworker, which calls a "Process" function in a different class. The function goes about its business, and sends an update back to the form displaying the progress bar. What I'm finding is that its doing everything right, except update the progress and a label on the form. I've put breakpoints in to check the values of variables being sent to the form, and they're correct. I've also checked the value/maximum of the progress bar during the same break as I step through, and they're being set correctly.

they're just not displaying their updated status. I've tried refresh and application.doevents, to no avail. When the backgroundworker is complete, the values of the progress bar/label are as if I've never touched them! When the worker is complete, the Close button is enabled, so I know its finished. Anybody got any pointers/thoughts on this because I've been battling with this for a day and a half so far. I'm using the same technique as I've used elsewhere in the app to do similar backgroundworker progress updates, but this one refuses to work properly.

Progress Bar - Parse A Large Picture

Jul 27, 2009

The intention of the application is to count the percentage of white in a grayscale picture and this is how i think i did this: [Code] Now as the title says i have an issue with the progress bar. As you can imagine, to parse a large picture with thousand, to say, millions of pixels it takes time (about 15-20 secs). The problem is that when click it crashes, so i thought to put a progressbar (even marquee it doesn't mind) to put the user on hold. but i can't think of a good way to do that and the net doesn't help, any good ideas?

VS 2010 Backgroundworker Thread Running Faster Than The UI Can Update Progress?

Nov 15, 2011

I have a VB.NET 2010 app that uses a backgroundworker to process MS Word docs. All of the code does what it is supposed to do, except when my code calls ReportProgress(). The UI cannot process the ProgressChanged event fast enough before the values in the class that are passed are changed. I know this because I inserted a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(100) line after each ReportProgress() call which allows time for the UI to make the updates properly. I guess I am looking for a better solution thanThread.Sleep(100) since this adds to the amount of time it takes to process all of the files. Here are some snippets of code that I am using:

When I Copy A Large Table, The Data Gets Corrupted?

Feb 7, 2011

This is a problem with MS Access, but I can't seem to find an MS Access Forum, so I'm asking it here.I have a large table of just one field. The field type is Byte. I use CTRL C and CTRL V to make a copy of the table.I then compare the Source and Destination tables and lo and behold they are different at about record number 8 million.I also tried an Append Query to append to an empty table (I haven't tried a Make Table query).But, similar corruption.The source and destination tables do not end up the same. The Record where the failure occurs varies, but it is always greater than 8 million.I tried this on MS Access 2002 and 2010 (both with an Access 2002 database).

Create Log File To Track Progress And Populate Controls Via Text File Or XML File?

May 22, 2009

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.

I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.

In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:

Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False

Large Multidimensial Array - Write A Program To Do Markov Chain But States Are Quite Large

Jun 9, 2011

I want to write a program to do Markov chain, but my states are quite large. First of all I calculate all the transition probabilities and revenues for all states(1381860 total states), and store in a multidimensional array. Public RevArr(0 To 9, 0 To 750, 0 To 282) As Long

After that the iteration of markov chain should use these as inputs to calculate the steady-state probabilities. But when I try to run the main code I got this error.Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

The following is the declaration of second array I add just another dimension for storing all the iterations, but I get this error. Dim stateprob(IT + 1, 0 To 9, 0 To 750, 0 To 282) As single
