Literally Split A String Into Multiple Lines?

May 21, 2010

I have a large string variable that I'd like to split into multiple line for readability. What is the syntax to accomplish this?

EXAMPLE: Dim str As String = "asfrgasdfgadsfgadfgdfgasdfgdasfgdfgsdghsdghsh"
EXAMPLE: Dim str AS String = "asfrgasdfgadsfgadfgdfgasdfgd" _
"asfgdfgsdghsdghsh"

Something like that is what I'm trying to accomplish.

[2008] Multiple Lines Of Txt File -> Single String?

Feb 26, 2009

I have a *.txt file which contains instructions and data, with its own comments (preceded by ! ), blank lines, and each instruction begining on a new line, but occassionally using two lines. Each instruction consists of several feilds seperated by a TAB. Finally each instruction ends in a comma. Only a few different instructions are there (10 different ones) but there are many of each. Spanning a good 2500 lines. Comments and blank lines are obviously of no interest to me. I merely need to read the instructions and the data that follows it.

Now, I have successfully used 'System.IO.StreamReader.ReadLine' to go through it line by line, picking out lines begining with certain strings (first 3 characters of a known instruction). All good, I can 'lift' out the lines of interest and store them, for them to be split up later (seperating their fields into instruction, data, etc..) and then into an array.

The problem is, since some of the data fields in these instructions are so long, it spans two lines, before it ends with a comma. Using the above method, I end up with two array entries for a single instruction, since I have stored individual lines rather than a complete instruction. The only similar situation I can tihnk of to explain this, is to pick out sentences in text, and store each one in a string. Of course these end with a period (full stop) but span two or more lines.

I am hesitant to post an example, since its formatting is rather strange, but it is generated that way from 3rd party software, so I cannot change that for my software application.Perhaps there is no 'graceful' way of doing this, meaning I would have to find a way of 'adding' the second line of the instruction, to the string of the first line. Or perhaps reading each line character by character, literally storing every number/letter until I reach a comma.

Breaking Apart A String Into Individual Values

Jan 24, 2010

I am very new to VB, and am programming in VB 2008 express. Sorry if this thread is in the wrong spot I need to add two 40 digit numbers together and was thinking that the simplest way to do it would be to input them as a string and then convert the string to a single dimensional array where x(1) is the 1st digit in the number, and x(30) is the 30th digit, etc. I would do the same for the other number where y(1) is the 1st digit. I would then add the x(40) and y(40) (which are the last digits of the number) together and carry the remainder into the next addition (39th digit, 38, ...)

Socket Return Breaking String Variable?

Feb 20, 2012

When trying to register a new user on the server, the server will post back messages such as "OK" and "usernameTaken". Upon comparing this returned string with another string (to perform an action based on the returned value), the compare isn't working.

Dim backupX As New CBackup
backupX.startSocket("127.0.0.1", 8888)
Dim str1 As String = backupX.registerUser("user1", "testpass")
Dim str2 As String = "usernameTaken"

[code]....

Looks to be like the socket code is working just fine.. each Function returns the corresponding Functions' Return value (registerUser -> SocketSendAndReceiveMSG -> sendAndReceiveMSG -> receiveMSG).

2008 Count Lines In Textbox With Multiple Lines Using Label To Display The Numbers?

Sep 3, 2009

how to count the lines in textbox1.text (with multiplelines). I don't need to count each character. I only need to count each line from top to bottom in textbox1.text (multiplelines) and I will use Label1 to display the numbers.

example:

1-pauljaones
2-tommyperrry
3-marktoms
4-Jonessmith
5-paulwhite

Obviously this is 5 lines and that's what I need to count.

Drawing Multiple Lines On A Canvas?

Jun 29, 2012

So I built myself a simple program to work out the kinks of drawing in my programs. I have a button that I press that when the textbox.text reads 1 it then draws a line of a specific height, color and position, the problem is when I click that button again it will crash informing me that...
"Specified Visual is already a child of another Visual or the root of a CompositionTarget."
[code..]

I know where the problem lies, its with the Canvas1.children.add(line), cause its telling me the line variable is already been used or in use on the canvas, I'm just unsure of how to turn that into a solution that will allow me to click the button a hundred times or more without being forced to MANUALLY make a hundred or more individual variables to store the line.

i've got my basic AutoTyper ready (well and one with autoupdating etc in it) but it's only a singular line. I don't know how but I know it would have to count the lines but from then on I'm stuck. I will need to make it type line 1, then on the next loop line 2 and go on until it's reached the amount of lines from the count then repeat from line 1. [Code]

Display Multiple Lines Of Data In A List Box?

Apr 1, 2012

I'm new to Visual basic (which will be obvious from my question) and am writing program that does various calculations, then displays the results in a list box. the results, however, are all concatenated, end don't each appear on a new line. I tried adding a carriage return/line feed at the end buit the compiler rejected it.

I can't find any examples of creating a list box, and adding multiple entries (one for each time a loop is performed), nor of how to use columns to make the resulting display cosmetically pleasing.
