In C# I'm calling a function on an interop class (Connection, written in VB6), which itself returns a plain object (System). Then there's a function on that object (InitialiseData) that I also call (even though the compiler isn't aware of it). var isInitialised = Connection.System.InitialiseData(path); The problem is, because that System object is returning a mere Object, I get the compile error "cannot resolve symbol". I can see why, but the same thing works fine in VB.NET:
I've been wasting so much time on this. Basically I want to have a list of objects and I want to call some specific methods of some specific bjects..g.MsgBox(Instances(0).Position(0).ToString)It should alert a number that presents the X position, but it is not working... the box does not even appear and no errors.
I am calling GetGlyphIndices from Vb.Net. I am using a single character string. I get the correct value in the indices array for the character '6' but not for characters requiring 2 bytes to be returned.
Does anyone have any experience with this API call? My next step is to write the C equivalent and make sure I can get it working without interop.
I have a managed class that uses a COM that looks like this.
[Code]....
Since I am using an unmanaged dll through a COM-Interob dll I am wondering if I need free the innerobj manually or if the gc is smart enough to do it automagically if I call ReleaseObject() My class implements IDisposable and I do the following atm: Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(myobj) Do I need to take care of releasing all inner objects that are created by the COM Object or not? And If I do have to do it, does the order matter (first inner then parent vs parent then inner)?
I have a tab control on first page of which there is a flexgrid. some functions are called which throughout make chages to this flexgrid. now during runtime I create more tabpages with exactly the same Flexgrid (as in I have named it the same as the first one so that I should be able to call the same functions and the same modifications should happen with this flexgrid as well. How should I call the function so that the flexgrid used is the one on my new tabpage. if I just call the function with the code Call functionname(), it modifies the same flexgrid control in the first tabpage and does nothing to the new ones on the newly created tabpages
It's been a while since I've had the time to browse through here, answer questions and ask some of my own. Just got a job at a custom business software developing company! But I do have a question I'd like some clearing up on.
What I have here is 2 classes, one inherits the other. Both function similar so a lot of the methods are the same for each. The one in particular is Reset_Class()
Here is a sample code of what I'm trying to do.. My question is, is it correct?

I have a form (frmMain) that contains a custom control (con class). frmMain contains a combo box control and when the user selects a value from it, I pass this value to a sub routine within con class (see red line below). This purpose of the sub routine is to populate a set of comboxes contained in con class according to the value that is passed in.
Private Sub cboGuidelines_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cboGuidelines.SelectedIndexChanged If bChanged = True Then
I always thought I understood how this works...but lately I have started really using interfaces and now things arent doing what I am expecting.
using entity framework, I have a service for each object that is responsible for interacting with the database and such....on my one service I am passing the collection of objects to my service as an icollection(of contactinfo) before I pass the object, the changetraker has the right states. however in my method, this is not the case and all states are set to unmodified.
Private Sub SaveExecute(ByVal param As Object) Dim srv As Services.ContactInfoService = GetService(Of Services.IContactInfoService)()
[Code]....
As I said above the Me.contacInfoCollection has the right changetracking states. But Once its passed to the srv.savechanges it reverts to unmodified. I am sure its something silly I am missing...the whole EF thing can be confusing to me...

I want to use reflection to dynamically call a dll (not an assembly, non-managed, possibly COM object model) in vb.net.I've seen several different methods of calling a method in a dll that is a .net assembly - but I have not found the way to dynamically call a method inside of a dll like user32.dll or winmm.dll. I believe this would be called late-binding?
The reason I'm asking is because I am building a language that will depend on external libraries for lots of different functionality. An example (in this language I'm building):
Declare Function mciSendStringA using "winmm.dll" (strCommand As String, strReturn As String, returnLength As Integer, blah As Integer) As Integer
Declare Function WriteConsoleA using "kernel32.dll" (hConsoleOutput As Integer, lpBuffer As String, numberofcharstowrite as Integer, lpReserved as Integer) As Boolean
When I build the interpreter for the call to mciSendString in winmm.dll, how can I use reflection to handle this? I want the user to be able to reference any dll/method they wish. Can I get some guidance in the right direction? Perhaps even some vb.net code that I can take apart and understand?
I seem to find more and more that I declare a lot of objects or methods as Shared now but it feels like I am not doing things properly.I try to avoid doing this but then I just end up with situations where I have to create an instance of a class just to call one method that would act no differently if it was just a shared method.Basically I'm just wanting to know if there is any good reason to avoid using Shared objects/methods. Obviously I dont declare EVERYTHING as shared, but it just seems to make things a lot simpler most of the time. For example in my current project (a chat application using WCF) I have a class just called Core which houses a lot of the main functions of the client program, so it has methods such as: SignUserIn, SignUserOut, SendMessage, MessageReceived etc and it also holds properties such as a list that contains all of the currently online users. These things are all declared Shared in my program because as far as I can see there is no reason for having to do this:[code]
control which will need to be reused in several forms in my program. It basically consists of several buttons in a panel. To start with, what I need to do is get the button values from the control into a text box on the first form. But I don't want to have a method calling the textbox directly from within the control, because then it won't be reusable in my other forms. Is there something I can do in VB like parentform.textbox.append for example, where you can generically call the methods of the form in which the control appears?
I want to know what are classes , objects , a namespace , subroutines, functions, methods, properties and differemce betweem byval and byref in your words.

The trouble I'm having is working out a way to be able to call the objects in the dynamically created usercontrols. I thought a list maybe an option but I am struggling to get the syntax/get it working. Wondering if anyone has some ideas or different approaches..
i have 2 types of transaction that can print but these 2 have different settings.how can i configure it on app.config?and how will i call the printer object?scenario:2 transactions, different printer to call.
I'm creating a certain number of objects based on some templates that I have available to the user. Then, I have a module created for each template where I will be doing some math operations, etc.
I know how many objects will be created, but of course visual studio doesn't at design time.

Have a windows application that "got complex" and new products could use many portions of the existing application.Decided to break app into multiple projects to facilitate sharing the appropriate pieces with new products. One object in app provides a library of text phrases used in the production of output docs.Wondering if such an object should be a set of shared methods instead of instantiating it in every object that consumes these text phrases.
In VB.Net I am attempting to use Office Automation starting in Access; then to Excel.I am having difficulty finding the References in VB.Net which will permit me to upgrade my VBA code to VB.Net.For example in VBA the code line: Application.SysCmd(acSysCmdSetStatus, Space(75))
In VB.Net, I cannot find "acSysCmdSetStatus." Error message = Name "acSysCmdSetStatus" is not declared Following are my Imports: Imports System.Data.OleDb
public class CategoryRepository: RepositoryBase<Category>, ICategoryRepository { public CategoryRepository(IDatabaseFactory databaseFactory) : base(databaseFactory)

Does anyone has an idea what i should change to let it work and let my UserRepository use the methods in RepositoryBase while implementing the IUserRepository?
I am working with a vb program, but there is something strange on one of my .vb code pagewhen i put the "dot" afther the object name its dont show the methods availables for this objectbut on other vb code pages i can see it. but in this one no.for exmaplethis is a piece of code: Dim sb As New StringBuilder()
I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.
I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function. How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?
I am getting this error, Not sure why it is happening "Error The SqlParameterCollection only accepts non-null SqlParameter type objects, not Int32 objects."I have tried with all sorts of possibilties, now try to enter default data as dummy data,
