Calling Both Parent And Inherited Methods With The Same Name?
Mar 30, 2012
It's been a while since I've had the time to browse through here, answer questions and ask some of my own. Just got a job at a custom business software developing company! But I do have a question I'd like some clearing up on.
What I have here is 2 classes, one inherits the other. Both function similar so a lot of the methods are the same for each. The one in particular is Reset_Class()
Here is a sample code of what I'm trying to do.. My question is, is it correct?
vbnet
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click( ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As

Pretending I have a class that inherits off Control, how would I handle the parent form's Resize and Move events within the control? I have a painting glitch that happens when the form is resized or moved. Right now in the form I just have:
vb.net Private Sub frmMain_ResizeMove(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _ Handles Me.Resize, Me.Move Me.Refresh()End Sub
But this can't be the proper way to do it, considering Refresh() invalidates all children (will be slow and flashing if the form has lots of controls). I want to basically do the above code inside the control.
Edit:This is the glitch after a resize of the parent form:
And this is what the button is supposed to look like:
Also, I experience this issue if something like a message box is dragged over top of it. How can I remedy these issues by forcing a repaint?

I have a tab control on first page of which there is a flexgrid. some functions are called which throughout make chages to this flexgrid. now during runtime I create more tabpages with exactly the same Flexgrid (as in I have named it the same as the first one so that I should be able to call the same functions and the same modifications should happen with this flexgrid as well. How should I call the function so that the flexgrid used is the one on my new tabpage. if I just call the function with the code Call functionname(), it modifies the same flexgrid control in the first tabpage and does nothing to the new ones on the newly created tabpages

In C# I'm calling a function on an interop class (Connection, written in VB6), which itself returns a plain object (System). Then there's a function on that object (InitialiseData) that I also call (even though the compiler isn't aware of it). var isInitialised = Connection.System.InitialiseData(path); The problem is, because that System object is returning a mere Object, I get the compile error "cannot resolve symbol". I can see why, but the same thing works fine in VB.NET:

I have a form (frmMain) that contains a custom control (con class). frmMain contains a combo box control and when the user selects a value from it, I pass this value to a sub routine within con class (see red line below). This purpose of the sub routine is to populate a set of comboxes contained in con class according to the value that is passed in.
Private Sub cboGuidelines_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cboGuidelines.SelectedIndexChanged
If bChanged = True Then

I have the following class in a .NET class library:
Code:
Public Class JasonTest
Sub New()
End Sub
[Code]....
The .AddNumbers call works fine, but the AddStrings call yields the error 'Object doesn't support this property or method'.
Is there any way to call a shared method from .NET in VB6? I was unable to find any documentation on this.

I am learning inheritance in VB.Net. A homework assignment asks me to write a base class with a name (String) property and a ToString method that displays the name. It also asks me to create some child classes of the base class and also implement a ToString method in those child classes. Is it possible for me to call the ToString method from both the child and base class?
[Code]...
Again, I am wondering if there is a way to call the ToString() method within the child class and then base class to generate output something like: "Hello VB.Net This is the name"

I want to use reflection to dynamically call a dll (not an assembly, non-managed, possibly COM object model) in vb.net.I've seen several different methods of calling a method in a dll that is a .net assembly - but I have not found the way to dynamically call a method inside of a dll like user32.dll or winmm.dll. I believe this would be called late-binding?
The reason I'm asking is because I am building a language that will depend on external libraries for lots of different functionality. An example (in this language I'm building):
Declare Function mciSendStringA using "winmm.dll" (strCommand As String, strReturn As String, returnLength As Integer, blah As Integer) As Integer
Declare Function WriteConsoleA using "kernel32.dll" (hConsoleOutput As Integer, lpBuffer As String, numberofcharstowrite as Integer, lpReserved as Integer) As Boolean
When I build the interpreter for the call to mciSendString in winmm.dll, how can I use reflection to handle this? I want the user to be able to reference any dll/method they wish.Can I get some guidance in the right direction? Perhaps even some vb.net code that I can take apart and understand?

control which will need to be reused in several forms in my program. It basically consists of several buttons in a panel. To start with, what I need to do is get the button values from the control into a text box on the first form. But I don't want to have a method calling the textbox directly from within the control, because then it won't be reusable in my other forms. Is there something I can do in VB like parentform.textbox.append for example, where you can generically call the methods of the form in which the control appears?

Charts(CurChartNo).RGB2Dbk = &HC0FFFF&
Charts(CurChartNo).Chart3D = False
[code]....
But the Charts is not recognized in the Sub. This is current program under ASP, I am converting to ASP.Net.

I have a base form and I inherit other forms from it. However, if i go back and change say the size of the base form, I don't see those changes take effect in my inherited forms. Does anyone know why that is? Is there a solution to this issue?So as far as design is goes, what exactly gets inherited by other forms?

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.
I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function.How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?

This is a challenging one that got me stumped while I was coding today. Suppose I am running the Sub Test1() and Test2() and would like to print out the value of the Shadows method of the instance of the object I am passing in to TestCall() (see below - it is clearer) using the following restrictions:
Can't change the contents of Class A, B, and C
Can't change Sub Test1() and Sub Test2()
TestCall() can't have an if, select case etc. statement that tries to figure out the type

I have a main form, and some sub forms, and each sub form can have some sub forms. When I have multiple sub forms open, and I try to get data from the parent form, it returns the data from the wrong parent form.For example I have two instances of Mainform.subform running. If I do something like this in a child form of one instance of the subform. It returns data from the other subform.
dim l = Mainform.subform.listofdata
Edit:I am using visual Studio 2008. Winforms, form designed using designer. In my mainform I am doing this
Protected Friend frmMain as Mainform
frmmain = new mainform
In frmMain I am doing this
Protected Friend frmsub as new Subform'
frmsub = new subform

I am having a problem with closing a form which I have inherited I have a form called frmAddForm_Simple, which contains 4 main controls (A Data Grid, A Save Button, A Close Button and a Text Box). The idea around the form is to create a form which could be used for inputting of many different types of data which are all entered in the same way (i.e. to add a new row to a database for [Status] table or [Location] table, all of which contain 2 columns in the database (an [Id] and a [value]). On the form I have a property called _FormChanged, which when the textbox text changes, sets the property to True. I then have the following code on the Close Button:-
Public Sub btnClose_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnClose.Click
If _FormChanged Then
If MessageBox.Show("Are you sure you want to close and discard any changes?", "Discard Changes",
[CODE]...
Is opened as a dialog (ShowDialog) and when I go to close the inherited form (by click on btnClose) and answer No to the above MessageBox the form closes anyway. Using the Debugged I have worked out that the following events occur in sequence (all of which runs in the Master Form mentioned above):-
1) btnClose_Click sub Routine runs
2) I answer No to the question do I want to close the form
3) The debugger steps over the Me.Close() line (as expected)
4) The debugger jumps up to the Sub Initialise (where ShowDialog was called from) and closes the form.
So at no point has the debugger even ran a line of code which reads Me.Close(), but the form closes anyway so Im fairly confused as to why the form should close.
My Master Form (frmAddForm_Simple) Code:-
Public Class frmAddForm_Simple
Private _FormChanged As Boolean = False
Private _FormLoading As Boolean = False

I am writing a COM Add-in for Microsoft Access 2010 using Visual Basic 2010.
I do not understand why the members of an inherited interface are not available to VBA. They do not appear in the VBA Object Browser and a run-time error occurs if an attempt is made to use them.
Here is a full code sample which demonstrates the problem:
First I have a base class with a defined interface:
Public Interface IClassBase
Property id As String
Property Name As String
End Interface
