Cannot Get VS2010 To Compile Release Version?

Mar 14, 2011

I just updated to VS2010 SP1, but I cannot be certain this problem didn't exist prior to the update. When I build my project the version in /bin/debug builds, but nothing builds in /bin/release. I do not remember making any changes that would affect this, but nothing I do now will get the release version to build.

In the Application settings under "Compile" I have Configuration set to Release and the Build output path is "binRelease For Debug I also have Configuration set to Release.

There doesn't seem to be anything else left to change/adjust - but no matter what I seem to do nothing builds in the bin/release folder.

Compile Specifically For .net 2.0 Runtime In VS2010?

Apr 13, 2011

I have a bunch of old VB.NET code, written originally on VS2005, and now I no longer have the license. I downloaded VS2010 free edition, and I just want to apply a relatively minor patch to an assembly/DLL. This particular DLL is being used by an existing Windows service (also written in VB.NET), and it's the server side implementation of a TCP remoting implementation.

So I need my patched code to be compatible with it all of this. When I naively tried to just build under VS2010, drop the DLL in place, and restart the service, it bails with some error about bad magic number or something. (I'm assuming because it's .NET 3.0 and the .NET 2.0 runtime has no idea how to deal with that).

Sorry for the long lead up, but I'm hoping there's some way in VS to say, 'build this as a .NET 2.0 assembly'. If this isn't possible, what are my options?

Different Results For Debug And Release Version Of Vb Dll?

Apr 17, 2012

I created a vb dll using class library in visual studio 2010 [URL]... I have accessed this Dll in Excel VBA by referencing it through (Tools>>Reference)...I obtain different results when i run my program from Excel and when I run it from Visual Studio during debugging (here the debugging starts Excel as an external program). The results are exported by the dll function as a structure array ( The required values
are in double format in a constituent 1D array). The difference is as high as 5%.

What might have caused this difference? Could someone please help me with this?

App Not Listed In Open With Dialog In Release Version

Sep 7, 2009

I managed to create an application that is listed in the 'open with' list only in debug version. Means, when I right click on a file extension and select "open with..." I get the 'choose program' dialog and can browse for my app, nothing impressive. The weird part is, that when I enter the path to the debug version of my program is works, and when doing the same to the release version my app is not even listed, it is simply not shown...

Does anybody know what it needs to make a simple VB.net app be listed here, any fancy debug/release setting?

Release Version VB2008 Application Won't Run On Windows 7?

Jan 20, 2011

I changed my VB2008 Express development system from Windows XP to Windows 7.After installing Windows 7 I installed VS2010 with VB2010 Express.Tried that and had issues so I installed VS2008 with VB2008 Express. The application I was developing with VB2008 on my XP system will compile and run in the debug environment with VB2008 on Windows 7 but the Release build (double clicking the .exe in the Release directory) will not. An information box pops up stating the application stopped working. No application Form ever showed up on the screen. I can run a simple application I start from scratch on this new setup. The release .exe compiled on my old XP system fails in the same way. What could be the problem? The application of interest uses an SQL Server CE database. A reference forSystem.Data.SqlServerCe is included in the References. What could be different about running in the debug environment vs running the

Set NET Compile Version?

Apr 17, 2009

I have recently been trying to use the extension functions of the generic collections in VB.NET. I have .NET 3.5 installed, however it appears that my project only uses libraries of version 2.0. How can I force VS2005 to use the 3.5 versions so that I can access the extension functions? A C# developer in our office could not find the comparable setting in the VB Project Properties dialog for setting the compiler to use 3.5.

IDE :: Incorrect Assembly Version After Compiling New Release Build?

Sep 21, 2009

Every time I compile a new release build in vb.net 2009, the file version number of my main exe is correct, but the assembly version number is the same as the last build instead of the current version even though I manually change the file and assembly version in the design studio to be the same prior to compiling. The only way I can get the assembly version to be correct is to close Visual Studio and delete the obj folder. Then if I open the solution and recompile, all is well.

Here is the information copied from the About box in VS:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

Lowering Dependancy Version Of Compile

Jun 9, 2011

I'm working on a project that is pretty simple, but the most recent version of VB.NET that I have is 4.0.That means, anything I compile, requires that version of the .NET framework. Is there any way to compile with an older version of the framework, or get it to require an older version? I don't want to make everyone upgrade to .Net 4.0 framework, if they already have 1.0, 2.0, 3.5, etc. installed already...

Filename Or One Of Its Dependencies, Requires A Later Version Of The .NET Framework But Only In VS2010?

Dec 17, 2010

I can create a brand new empty console app in Visual Studio 2008 and add a reference to c:myfilesCrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework.dll and verything works just fine.If I do the same thing with the same file in Visual Studio 2010 (after changing my targeted framework to 3.5), I get the error that "CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework.dll or one of its dependencies, requires a later version of the .NET Framework than the one specified in the project." In Visual Studio 2010 it won't work unless I change my targeted framework to 4.0. How is it possible that a DLL could be incompatible with version 3.5 of the framework in VS2010, but compatible in VS 2008?

VS2010 Converted 32bit App From .Net 1 To .Net 4 Not Loading Without Local Version Of SQL Server 2008 Express Running?

Mar 28, 2011

I have an application that will not load unless my local SQL Server is running on an Vista Home Premium machine. This started after a .Net 1 to .Net 4 conversion. I am using a sub main sub that is not being called (msgbox is not fired when entering the app), however, I see the app through taskmgr with increasing memory usage, but then the app is removed from the list. By design, if the program cannot locate a SQL Server a form pops up with a connection box to locate the SQL Server for the app. How it determines if it has a valid connection is the program looks for a connection string in the registry, then attempts to connect to it, however, none of this code executes because of the failure to enter into the sub main. The two machines I have tried the 32 bit app on

XP Pro: Failed / Using SQL Server 2008 Express

Windows 2003 Server: Works / Using SQL Server 2008 Developer

Both machines have .Net 4 Client Profile with Extended?

VS 2008 Check Difference Between A Full Version And Unregistered Version?

Sep 1, 2010

I have created a license system for my application with MySql about half a year ago. What it would do is take the serial number and send it to my server if the key was correct it would return a 0 if its wrong the return value would be a 1.The problem was that when the serial number was entered correctly my program would create a "fake file" for example vb.dll in the system. And on run time my program would check for that vb.dll if the file exist it would skip my trial program and run the app as a full version. Half year later i think creating a "fake file" and checking for it on start up is extremely wrong and that's not very good security. How can i check the difference between a full version and unregistered version?

Ideally I just want to zip up the minimal amount of files and for people to put this in a folder of their choice and just run it.

Within that folder are the necessary files (a DLL and a .EXE) to run my application. Can I just supply those two files out to people?
