I am trying to create a function that will return a pen(System.Drawing.Pen to be exact) that will have a random color and width. I thought that something like this should do the trick:

I have written some code to generate 10*10 textboxes during run-time.the problem is; I don't know how to access / change them after they are created. after some googling, I found this code to show the text of ie box42;

My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:

flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

View 2 RepliesI hope the question makes sense, anyways. I'm looking to know if in VB.NET, when we call an object's constructor, is there some kind of a reference that points back to the caller? I'm interested because of a corner case where I want the object being created to first be able to validate the existence of some data in the caller before it allows itself to be created. If this validation fails, I plan on throwing an exception. This corner case will never happen at runtime unless the object being created is used improperly by a programmer. The object being created is not inheriting the object I want it to validate, so I can't do anything with the MyBase qualifier.
It's bit of a "future-proofing" issue that I have a (bad) habit of doing. Not critical -- I can always leave stern comments behind as a last resort. Wanted to know if this was possible.

View 2 RepliesAfter taking a few years off from programming, I decided to start learning vb.net. I have created a user control that contains a picture box. I added some custom properties to the picture box that will hold general string data from a database.
My problem is that the user control is programatically created during run time, and during this time a DoubleClick event handler is added for the picture box that is within the user control.
I need to be able to set the custom properties for the picture box during the creation of the user control, so that when the control (picture box) is double clicked I can read these values but am unsure on how to access them.
The picture box is the entire size of the user control, or I would just add the custom properties right to the user control and add the DoubleClick event handler to that. However, double clicking needs to be done on the picture box since it takes up the entire user control, unless anyone has an idea to trigger the DoubleClick event of the user control when the picture box is double clicked.

I am looking for the best way to have a kind of runtime dynamical references. I will try to explain the purpose with an simple example.
Lets imagine we have a structure holding a persons data like this

A list of Persons is contained in a List Of Person. On a form we have a textbox showing the (First and Last) Name and a textbox showing ONE phone Number. With a selection we can choose what phone number to show. The selection gives the selections "Home", "Work" and "Mobile". we can scroll through the list of persons with a kind of scrolling mechanism (not important in this case)
For the textbox showing the choosen phone number we DO NOT want to use a CASE statement (it would be possible in this example, but with the real project this results in a runtime changing case).
So we want to use something like this:
textboxPhoneNumber.Text = SelectedPerson.xxxPhone
Where xxx can be home, work or mobile, resulting in the right reference to the structures choosen element (HomePhone, worhPhone amd MobilePhone).

View 14 RepliesI'm adding some functionality to an app that was made a few years ago and I need to raise an event when the tabcontrol is clicked. However it would seem because the control was created publicy I can't add a handler to it? I never ran across this before. I stripped the code down to the bare essentials. As you can see in the image, if I Dim the control within the sub I can add the handler. But any handler created for the publicly created control fails.
Is there another way to create the hander in this case?

As you can see, i can retrieve the tag of the button (which is created at runtime) without any problems, i've made a temporary msgbox to show me the value of the tag, just for testing purposes. What i do have a problem with, is retrieving the tag of the individual web browsers, how should i do this?
Next issue, how would i code for my buttons to show the web browser with the same tag as the button that's just been clicked?
