Changing Application Assembly Name Programmatically
Feb 23, 2011
I work with VB.NET 2005 and I want to set the application EXE name according to a certain condition. For example:
I have a variable its name Version
If Version = 1 EXE name will be CarsApp
Else If Version = 2 EXE name will be BuildingApp
and so on.

Is there some way of programtically changing the culture for a multi form application on startup so that the application will interpret date formats correctly. For example if the aplication runs on a machine with a en-US culture it would be able to take a date from a database in the MM/dd/yyyy format and convert it to a date object and when the same application runs on a en-GB machine it can take that same MM/dd/yyyy date and convert it into a date object without getting a date format exception.

VS 2008 Is there a way to set the assembly version programmatically? For example, My.Application.Info.Version.Major is readonly. Therefore, I was wondering if there was a way to call some code from the assemblyInfo file to set <Assembly:
AssemblyVersion("1.0.0.0")>

I've got a simple VB.Net 4 WinForms application that does basic code generation. The code generation creates a DLL assembly perfectly fine, but each time the DLL is generated it needs to be registered programmatically with the GAC. The reason it must be registered is that it is a COM object that when deployed gets called via CreateObject from a VB6 application. Eww, I know.All of this works fine: the DLL generation, registering programmatically and using the generated DLL from the VB6 application.The problem is that my application that does the code generation can only generate the DLL once before the DLL is locked out by the process with no way to unlock it without stopping the EXE and starting it up again. This obviously prevents the user of the code generation tool from making a change and recompiling the DLL without restarting the application.[code]
I've tried throwing the assembly definition into a different AppDomain as I've seen in a number of articles on the web, but none of the implementations that I've come up with has worked. In fact, nearly all of them ended up with the generated assembly then being defined in BOTH of the AppDomains. I've also tried doing a ReflectionOnly assembly load but in order to the the register functions the assembly must be loaded in active mode not reflection mode.[code]

I have ASP gridview bound to an Entity Data source which works no problem, however when I try to programmatically change a header columns text, it appears to break the styling and will not allow sorting either, below is how I am trapping and changing the Header row column text.
Protected Sub gv1_RowDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles gv1.RowDataBound
If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.Header Then
'retrieve the values from the userdeftable
e.Row.Cells(6).Text = App.Session.Company.UserDef3
End If
End Sub

When I go to my project properties I can see the Assembly Name under the Application tab. Now if I click the Assembly Information button I see some other settings such as title, description, company, etc. I can get the name by doing: Assembly.LoadFile("c:\filepath").GetName().Name.ToString()My question is how can I get the title, description, company, etc. I have tried a few things but nothing seems to work. Also I was told that you can create custom settings. How would you do this and how would you access them?

ASP.NET pros out there can answer this question. I have a single web application that contains a website and a web service - both have several assembly references in common (data access layer, utilities, etc) - however, recent changes made to the web service will require different versions of the common assemblies, versions that the website won't work with (in case you're wondering, the website is some legacy 1.x .NET code that explodes when using the newer version assemblies.)
allow my web service to reference one version and have my website reference another? I can obviously have only one version with the same name within the bin folder.(P.S. - It just dawned on me that I could probably compile and reference the common assemblies with a different name, and place those in the web app's bin folder - but that sounds really fugly...)

I am trying to edit the assembly description for my vb.net application. However I'm stuck and have been for about an hour. Here's the following line i'm trying to edit in AssemblyInfo.vb:[code]but the program keeps throwing me an error stating 'constant expression is required.' I have also tried and \n with no luck either. I haven't found an answer online and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

Anyone know of a library/assembly that can be used to generate a PDF from within a .net application.I know there are free PDF 'printer' drivers that could be installed separately but is there anything that can do it directly from within the application? For example a DLL that I can deploy with my application.

I created a simple appication that loads a local Crystal Report into the CrystalReportViewer and then exports that report to PDF. I am able to run this application on my own computer, but when I try and run it on another computer it just errors out. I had to import the Crystal Report assembly into the application so I could get it to properly work. According to the error message, it seems to fail on the Crystal Report import statement. I have tried to install a couple of packages from SAP, but none of them seem to work?

Out of 70 users of my application 2 are getting the following message when they to run the application... That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers. The reason for the error is that by default .net applications run from a network location have limited permissions. You need to use caspol.exe to add the network folder where your application is being run from to the Trusted Zone. If you do a search on these forums you will find plenty examples of how to do this. It is fairly simple. It will have to be done on every machine that will be running the application and a simple cmd file can be made to do this. The only difference is that I've asked our service desk to install the application to the local C drive which I believe they did.

I am loading an Assembly using Assembly.LoadFrom() as the assemblies are located in a different path from Application Base directory.
Dim oAssembly As Assembly = _
Assembly.LoadFrom("C:\MyFolder\" + ddlXlate.SelectedItem.ToString() + ".dll")
And I consume a Type from that assembly without any problem:
oXML = CType(oAssembly.CreateInstance(sBaseType + ".XlateContainer"), _
XlateBase.XlateContainer)
However, the problem occurs when I try to use a Type from this assembly from within another method like the one below:
oComboBox.DataSource = _
[Enum].GetValues(Type.GetType(sType + "+ItemEnum," + sAssemblyName))
sAssemblyName is the one I loaded using LoadFrom() actually. After it said it cannot find the assembly, I used AssemblyResolve event which solved my problem :Subscribing AssemblyResolve event :
AddHandler AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve, _
AddressOf MyResolveEventHandler
Event Handler Method:
Private Shared Function MyResolveEventHandler(ByVal sender As Object, _
ByVal args As ResolveEventArgs) As Assembly
Return Assembly.LoadFrom("C:\PSIOBJ\" + args.Name + ".dll")
End Function
And I thought maybe the error occurs because it cannot find a dependent assembly defined in assembly manifest file I loaded using LoadFrom() already but when I checked the args.Name, I saw it was trying to load same assembly and after that it worked without any problem. So basically a type in the loaded assembly cannot be found before the event adding change.
My old code was using AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Load() and Assembly.Load() methods and they were working fine without the AssemblyResolve event. I was able to reach types in dynamically loaded Assembly from every where within the same AppDomain.
LoadFrom() can find dependencies automatically within the same requested assembly path and that couldn't be problem as everything this dll needs was there. So at first it looked like a AppDomain problem to me as it looks like it seems it can reach assemblies from Load context instead of LoadFrom context and I am now using LoadFrom context.But now it seems I should pass oAssembly instance evertwhere to use any type from the loaded assembly?Doesn't it load the assembly where I can reach it everywhere (same AppDomain) using simple Type.GetType(...) method?

I'm wanting to include a system tray icon in my WPF project, and found this resource:[URL]..which looks like it will work beautifully, but it's written for C# and I'm using VB.net for this project. I downloaded his project and built the notifyicon as a DLL, then added as a reference to my project.
It throws up an error: Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'Hardcodet.Wpf.TaskbarNotification' does not have a strong name So I'm trying to figure out the best way to proceed. Do I need to strong name it, or is there a better way to do this?
