Check If Port Is Blocked By Windows Firewall?
Aug 15, 2011
How do i check if specific port is blocked by Windows firewall , both in incoming and outgoing connections.
I've seen code samples such as this one:
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Dim host As String = "localhost"
Dim port As Integer = 6900
[Code]....
But how can i know if the exception is thrown specifically because of firewall blocking, and not because of other socket errors?

I am trying to control the security board using the Windows Firewall which connects to my server that was made in VB.Net. My only problem is when I open the Windows Firewall my server crashes. It also displays this error: "Error, win%fir%90y4e does not support this server. upgrade you version of Winsock.". So I upgraded myself to the latest Winsock that there is out there. After doing so I try again and my server still crashes, but this time with a different error. The error this time was the following: "Error, no client is available for win%fir%90y4e. try again later.". What do I do?

I built a WCF service that exposes itself for a web application, it accepts an object and prints the data on the clients machine. Works fine on my development machine, and the service is up and running on any machine i install it on. I can enter ip address in clients machine web browser and see it is running. Problem is when i send the object to the clients machine it returns an error, that sounds like it could be because of the clients windows firewall. Where would i start at to deal with this problem ?There was no endpoint listening at http://192.168.1.168:2202/PrintLabel that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.

VB2005. In my application I am required to go to a website, collect info, and then display both the webpage and the info collected. For this I am using the System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser component and have it working faily well. The only thing now is that in order to get to external websites the company requires us to login to the firewall proxy server. For example when I visit [URL] a login box pops-up for our firewall server [URL] and I sign in with ID 9999 and password "pass". I am trying to programatically do this with the WebBrowser by using the credentails but have not found any relevant examples. Is this possible with the System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser component?

I have written some code to check if a port is open. I'm currently trying to work with the system.net.sockets name space.I know that the easy way out would be to use AxWinsock, but I don't think the AxWinSock is very cool, nor do I think it's very professional when trying to make network applications in VB.NET.
I've got this Error message : Socket Exception Was unhandled, No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:1 IDK, Like I said, I'm new to the System.net.sockets namespace, I'm pretty good with other stuff in VB.NET, but when it comes to the serious stuff like the system.net.sockets namespace, I'm not so great.look at this code and tell me what I am doing wrong, I've manged to get this far, and I don't want to just give up and continue watching my movie.

I'd like to check to see if a serial port even exists. I know that if it doesn't, there is an error thrown when you do a port.open So, I would imagine that doing a simple IF port.isopen won't work?I looked at all the methods on the class and don't see anything obvious on how to do it.I just want to see if the hardware exists on the PC and set a boolean variable if it does when the form loads.

This is my problem.I have a field set up in MS Access to Boolean YES/NO, this field is populated when the user check a checkbox on a windows form. If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form. Example: If I enter a users phone number and the user data is present, the form gets populated with the information the user previously entered which was store in the database.Example: If the user selected checkbox1 and submits the form. When I search for the user info, the check box should check(populate) because the user had checked it on submit.Here is what I have done:

What I am doing is creating an app to send and receive CNC programs to machine tools via the RS232 interface. At the moment I am testing the software with 2 laptops linked together through a cable I have made up. which all works. I have added a serial port to my form 1 and using the code below I can send and receive data. However with the send button I can open the comm port send the data and then close the comm port (No Problems there). With the receive button I want to open the comm port receive the data and close the comm port. The problem I have is checking when the app has finished receiving data so I can then close the comm port

I have a task that needs to be executed many times in a thread, so as to keep my GUI responsive. Right now I'm using the ThreadPool to accomplish the tasks, and it works perfectly. I get all the data I expect back from the threads, life's good. When those tasks are finished, I then fire off another set of threads to accomplish another set of tasks, in the same fashion. The work method of these threads uses a call to RegistryKey.OpenRemoteBaseKey, which does exactly that, opens a remote registry key. The problem is: if the user running the application does not have permission to open the remote registry the call will throw an IOException, but I expect this behaviour because the user does not have permission to do it. However, the call itself can take FOREVER.
I wrote the application initially to use delegate methods and used the WaitHandle.WaitOne() method on AutoResetEvents in a state object I passed to each delegate. I tried the WaitOne method using a timeout, which worked fine until I realized that even though the WaitOne timed out, the thread was still running. This is a problem because (from what I understand) processes are only given a certain number of ThreadPool threads and, once used, they must be finished in order to be released back to the threadpool. In my work method, I also have a variable that can be signalled when the thread should be stopped, but that (obviously) only works on code that I've written.how can I cancel a thread that's stuck on a .NET method? Is there some sort of garbage collection method I can call if I give it a handle?

I am making a banking system in Vb.Net but I had a problem with this function. If a user fails to input the pin number for 3 times, it will be block automatically and will need the admins permission in order for that person to activate the account again. I really don't know how to code the blocking of account and asks for admins authorization to unblock the account again. By the way I'm also using MsAccess as my database for my Bank Simulation.

Im working on an AutoUpdate class for a small application I've been working on, and with Windows 7 and Vista machines I get a permissions error when trying to replace some of the files in the Application folder. The only way to get it work is to run the application as an administrator. Is there a way I can either attempt to automatically run the app as administrator, or a way of replacing the files that won't be blocked by Vista/7's permission gatekeepers?

I write program for Windows CE that should work with Serial ports. I use object System.IO.Ports.SerialPort. Everything works well but when I close program and open it again, I receive error: Port is in use! At the end I write:
port.close()
port.dispose()
And If I add this:System.GC.collect() than everything begins to work But problem is that computer gets stuck when garbage collector is called for each port. If I tried to use collector somewhere else, it doesnt "collect" ports and they look like used if program starts again.
