Check To See If A Serial Port Even Exists?
Feb 9, 2010I'd like to check to see if a serial port even exists. I know that if it doesn't, there is an error thrown when you do a port.open So, I would imagine that doing a simple IF port.isopen won't work?I looked at all the methods on the class and don't see anything obvious on how to do it.I just want to see if the hardware exists on the PC and set a boolean variable if it does when the form loads.

Dec 20, 2009What I am doing is creating an app to send and receive CNC programs to machine tools via the RS232 interface. At the moment I am testing the software with 2 laptops linked together through a cable I have made up. which all works. I have added a serial port to my form 1 and using the code below I can send and receive data. However with the send button I can open the comm port send the data and then close the comm port (No Problems there). With the receive button I want to open the comm port receive the data and close the comm port. The problem I have is checking when the app has finished receiving data so I can then close the comm port

Oct 2, 2009I am trying to write something through serial port to my device. Before that, I added the data received handler to read the data when the device response with some data. The problem now is how can i check the status of the data received event? I need to know when the data received event has started or has ended before I can proceed to do some other task like check if the result is successfully receive.

Mar 28, 2006I have a stand alone VB.Net 2005 application that uses a serial port that generally stays open while the application runs on a Windows XP system. In trying to bullet-proof the UI, I ran into a problem when the USB to Serial Converter normally used to provide the serial port is disconnected while the serial port is open. In trying to handle the resulting error when accessing the port, I find I cannot close the port.
When trying to do so, the error message says something like "unable to close the port. You may not have sufficient permissions." Reconnecting the USB/Serial Converter does not reactivate the port.

Apr 3, 2011What i want it to do is 'listen' to the lpt port, when a sensor is broken then display the time. there are two sensor to measure the time of the first and then the second sensor.How do i get VB to listen to the sensors which are on two different inputs of the lpt port and time stamp in micro seconds. I can get it to read the state of the input on mouse click but i need it to display the time in micro seconds when the input changes. i will then use the times from the two sensors to work out the time it took between both sensor changing.

Jun 3, 2012I am trying to buld a DLL in VB.NET 2010 that will be use to control a vending machine.Whin a call into the DLL to a function to open and setup the comport the first time its opens it just fine, but if a call into the DLL again it does not know that the port is open even if it is still open. I can check with another program and is shows the port is open and if I try to call into the DLL again to open the port I get an error that the port is already open. Any idea how to set this up so it will work
