Accessing The Serial Port?

The link below has code to connect to a modem thru the serial port but it is for an earlier version of VB. when I convert the code, it does not fully convert and has 4 errors that prevent building the project. can someone tell me what needs to be changed or added?

I have a stand alone VB.Net 2005 application that uses a serial port that generally stays open while the application runs on a Windows XP system. In trying to bullet-proof the UI, I ran into a problem when the USB to Serial Converter normally used to provide the serial port is disconnected while the serial port is open. In trying to handle the resulting error when accessing the port, I find I cannot close the port.
When trying to do so, the error message says something like "unable to close the port. You may not have sufficient permissions." Reconnecting the USB/Serial Converter does not reactivate the port.

View 2 RepliesIf I uninstall the COM1 and reboot, it works. If I shut down (power off) and restart, I get the message below. If I uninstall then click on Scan for Hardware Changes,The given port name does not start with COM/com or does not resolve to a valid serial port. Parameter name:portName
View 8 RepliesIm having problem with the Serial Port. When i run my program, "Access to the port 'COM1' is denied". What does that mean? Im not sure whats happening because theres no error in my code. Someone suggest me to use 'COM2'. Which is also the same result. I have a microcontroller, programmed and run it. And i need to capture the data onto my vb, which is on a multiline textbox. How to i do that?Just to double check my code?

I am new to this forum as will as to VB. I am using VB6. I want to access the USB port in order to read the data at the USB port comming from my Data acquisition card.Or as a matter of fact can I also access the data from my mouse, because it also transmits the signal when ever the mouse is moving.
View 3 RepliesI have am using an XBee ZigBee wireless module to communicate with a project of mine. I currently have it set up to the point where I can open a hyperterminal session to COM 4 (which is the usb com port), and recieve the data that is being sent via the microcontroller on the other side of the wireless link.
I would like to make an app that takes the data and puts it in to a more user-readable format. (Via VB 2005) So far all I have come up with is some problems. It doesn't seem like I can use the built in serial port tool to access a "virtual" com port. From the following link:Quote:
Note You cannot use the Microsoft .NET Framework classes to directly access other types of ports, such as parallel ports or USB ports.[URL]..Do I have to use a "COM port redirector" to make it seem like a real COM port? Or is there some easy way that I am not thinking of?
I've been checking endlessly on MSDN and the net in general trying to find out how to get the computer's "C:" drive serial number and also the GUID.Everything I've found seems to pointing to the System.Management library using the ManagementObject, but "ManagementObject" doesn't appear to be recognized by the IDE?!I've imported: System.Management, System.Management.Instrumentation, Microsoft.Win32 and System.IO, but ManagementObject is still coming up as an error.I'm aware I can simply access the registry to get the GUID, but can anyone simply give me the code to access these 2 elements please.
View 10 RepliesMy problem is that i have a usb-to-serial device which creates a virtual serial port ( Com 4 for example )on the computer i need to connect to it and get the data stored on it I already have worked out how to use the System.io.ports to connect to the port ( baud rate, stop bits, parity ,ect) and it connects to the usb fine. But once the connection is open i don't know how to retrieve the data. Everything i have tried relies on events. But as the usb does not send data i don't know how to access the serials memory.
View 3 RepliesI have been doing some research into accessing devices on a USB port and it's kind of helped, but not really. From what I understand, I can use the IO.Port namespace to access a device on a USB port (usually). Let me know if this is incorrect.
First, I made a simple program that looped through the ports available. I get COM1 and COM3, but I have 4 USB ports. Where are the others?

I am trying to buld a DLL in VB.NET 2010 that will be use to control a vending machine.Whin a call into the DLL to a function to open and setup the comport the first time its opens it just fine, but if a call into the DLL again it does not know that the port is open even if it is still open. I can check with another program and is shows the port is open and if I try to call into the DLL again to open the port I get an error that the port is already open. Any idea how to set this up so it will work
View 7 RepliesI'm debugging a VB app where I'm using a comm port attached to a bluetooth radio paired to another bluetooth radio in order to communicate with a remote barcode scanner. The pair of bluetoooth devices basically work as a serial cable replacement. Sometimes it works fine, but after a while I get an UnauthorizedAccessException message which breaks the program (see attached jpeg).
I only get this when I use the radios and not when I use a direct cable. I wonder if it has something to do with other bluetooth devices nearby trying to communicate with mine. I've used the .NET Framework 2.0 Confuration tool to adjust the zone security to give full trust to MyComputer, so I don't think it has to do with security, but I'm really going beyond my area of expertise here. I don't know what's going on.

For my application a need to set a breakstate on/off of 25ms.In Xp this runs fine when I set breakstate=true and wait for 25ms and then breakstate= false and wait 25ms.In CE6.0 when I set breakstate = true, it only throws a puls.It is even not possible to keep breakstate on.
how to solve this or is there an alternative to simulate a breakstate?

View 14 RepliesFor many years, I have sent data between 2 computers using serial ports."Here is the data", "Thank you for that data!" type stuff.Where do I get more information for doing the same thing with 2 computers that are networked together? Assume a local ethernet connection.I have experimented with serial-ethernet modems and that works well but I don't want any more hardware. Is there a good thread here I should read?I want 2 VB programs running and I want to exchange data periodically.
View 2 RepliesI know things have changed in VB2005.net and i have Express and i want to controll the serial port. I have a program from VB6 that i understand and i tried to convert it but i get alot of errors and i have know idead what they mean. As you can tell i haven't been programming very long.
If someone can point me in the right direction for programming the serial port in VB2005 .net i would appreciate it or tell me what differences there may be.
I am developing a UI for an embedded device that I have designed and built. The device uses an FT232 chip which, when connected via USB is automatically assigned one of the COM ports. I was wondering if there is a way to set up a loop which would automatically detect which COM port the device has been assigned. I could then add some handshaking to verify that the port is correct.
