Close Program When Windows Session Ending

I have a program that will run in the tray and have the close button disabled to prevent the user from closing the program (I know they can still kill it from task manager).I was wondering how to detect a logoff/reboot/shutdown to run a closing code. [code]

I have an issue with the System.Net.Mail.SMTPClient class - when it sends an email via the Send method it does not seem to send the QUIT command after sending the email so the connection stays open indefinitely (or until the SMTPClient instance is disposed of by the garbage collector) as far as I can tell.I thought oh well I must just need to call Close or Dispose on it but neither of those methods exist This is very basic, standard SMTP server usage - every server should send QUIT after it is done sending the other commands used to transfer the email, otherwise the remote server keeps the session open (and some servers have a limit on how many sessions can be open at a time or how many emails can be sent per session) so this could cause some serious problems.
Am I being daft or does there seem to be no way to make it do what pretty much every other SMTP client in the world does? I found a Microsoft Connect topic that had been created about this but it was 4 years old and the response from MS was that they would probably include something in the next version of the framework... which is what we are now on

I have written a converting program, which converts binary files to ASCII files. (VB.net 2010). I need to have a functional "stop" button on the form and I was wondering if there was a simple command to make a program stop, exit all procedures, and wait for user input on the form.
It is not feasible to multithread this application, as it frequently interfaces with the form. Currently, I have a global boolean variable which becomes true if the stop button is pressed, and I have internal loops checking to see if the variable is true. However, I don't to waste CPU on checking a variable if it's not necessary.

Many of our users, internal and external, start our web application. Then at some later point, they open a new window from within the browser. They want to have 2 independent sessions of the application running. However, by doing it this way they are actually using the same session data.
Is there a way, in code, to determine if there is another browser window open with the same session?
We're using VS 2008, C# and/or VB.Net.
COMBINING MY RESPONSES FROM BELOW:
Maybe I'm saying this wrong. When they open a second window and change it to a different widget number, and then go back to the original window, on the next post-back it will be using the second window's widget number, not its own. We are using IE7.

Has anyone implemented any effective solutions to address the numerous issues that are caused by IE8's session sharing functionality? We've gotten very close by writing a custom http module that compares session and view state values, but our efforts are thwarted by things such as accelerator keys and unaccceptable copying of session objects.

On windows authentication (intranet web application). When the session is about to timeout, the client should be presented with a POP-UP that asks to click OK to extend the session or else cancel to timeout the session. Which is the better way to accomplish this task. By Using Ajax Call or By handling it in the code behind file when the session (userid) is nothing.

I am storing a session variable that a user types into a textbox. With their valid input, their session gets created and they get a little more functionality than the regular end users of the site.I was wondering if it is possible to find a way to add someone's session variable to the end of a URL. This way we can email a link to one of our clients, they click it, and their session has automatically begun. They already have the textbox to enter their code into, but I was told that it would be much easier for the users to just click a link that will start their session.

If e.CommandLine.Count > 0 Then
Dim IncomingCommand As String = e.CommandLine.Item(0).ToString
If IncomingCommand.Substring(0, 2) = "-1" Then
form1.close()
End If
End If
I am trying to make the program close if the -1 string is sent with the program. See my installer allows for me to run certain programs before it actually installs, but it doesn't shut down copies of the program itself. So I have a next startup instance set to shut the program down if the -1 is received. But if the program is not running it starts up instead. This is not desired. form1.close doesn't work. e.cancel = true doesn't work, etc etc. What can I do to make the program not start during this instance.

In VB6, I've learned why I should not used "END" to close or terminate a program. Does that rule still applies to VB .NET? (.NET 2003 if that makes any difference)
What is a proper way to close a VB NET program while ensuring that all forms that are either visible and or invisible at the time of termination gets unloaded from memeory, and all used resources gets released?

I'm currently in the process of building a text editor type program, and have run into a brick wall. I haven't done VB in years, so I may just need a little reminder on some things. I have coded everything so far as far as opening files, saving them, changing fonts, colors, etc. However, I'm looking to add a Close button to my menu strip that will just close the currently opened file, and not the entire program, while also ask the user if he/she would like to save before closing the file, and then if they select yes, it will show the save dialog, and if not, it will go ahead and close the currently opened item.

I created a new windows form application using VB 2010. I added no controls to the form. This is right "out of the box" app created by the VB windows form app wizard. I next added a FormClosed event handler. The handler gets called whenever I click the "x" on the form.Later I needed to close the form programatically in response to an event from an automation client. So I did something apparently farily dumb. I called "Me.Close()" Nothing happens. The form stays up on the screen. My FormClosed event handler is NOT called. The MSDN entry for "Close" doesn't give me a clue as to why this call doesn't work. Indeed, it seems to imply it should work.So I added a couple of lines of code after calling "Close()" since when I stepped across that line of code it appears that no other code would execute. Sure enough, as soon as I step over the call to Close(), I cannot step through any other lines of code.
Then I found another piece of form code while searching around and I found the code had what appeared to be an odd keyword just dangling in the code. The keyword, colored by the IDE as a VB keyword? So I typed "End" into my method and intellisense shows me "End Statement. Stops execution immediately". And it does. But is my FormClosed event handler called. No.I added "Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form" to see if that had any effect. No change. So how does a form close itself programatically?

I have an application developed in VB.net with 3.5 framework. I have disabled close (X) button on the main form of the application while doing some processing. I have achieve disabling by "Overriding ReadOnly Property CreateParams()" of the form. This is working fine as both control button on form and close option on right click in the taskbar shows disabled. This fulfill my needs on the Windows XP OS but not on Windows 7 OS. As in Windows 7 right click on application icon in taskbar shows a different menu, which has a new "Close window" option.
The close in original menu still shows disabled (this old menu is hidden but can be shown by holding Shift key and right click on the application icon in taskbar). Now I need to disable this "Close window" option as well and only for my application.
Is there a method through which I can do this programmatically.
