Jan 17, 2012

I am trying to write several strings that contain the values of several dictionaries to a single XML file. What would be the best way to do this? I thought xDocument looked the best way, but i am struggling to write multiple strings to one document.

I intend to read from this XML file so it needs to be valid.

Prepend A String To All Strings In A List Of Strings?

Aug 5, 2010

I have a list of strings. For each string in that list, I want to prepend another string. I wrote a method to do it, but I was wondering if there was something already in .NET I could use to do this. It seems like something that could be built in, but I was not able to find anything.

Here is the method I wrote:

Private Function PrependToAllInList(ByRef inputList As List(Of String), ByRef prependString As String) As List(Of String)
Dim returnList As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)
For Each inputString As String In inputList
returnList.Add(String.Format("{0}{1}", prependString, inputString))

[code].....

It works, but I would rather use built in functions whenever possible.

VS 2008 Using List Of Strings Or Array Of Strings?

Oct 16, 2009

I'm migrating from VB6 to VB.NET, in hence my questions below:

I have to write a function that returns array of strings.

How can I initiate it to empty array? I need it since I have to check if it's empty array after it returns from this function.

Is list of arrays better for this purpose? If I use a list - Is it empty when it firstly defined? How can I check it it's empty?

Find Strings Inside Strings?

Aug 15, 2011

I have been looking for examples to find the string between two strings. This top one works fine;

Public Sub ReadData(ByRef keywordStart As String, ByRef keywordEnd As String, ByVal filename As String)
Using reader = New StreamReader(filename)

[Code].....

Now the first one is fine - Ext_Volume is result of the string between the strings <Volume> and </Volume>. <Volume> and </Volume> are unique so this is straight forward.

However the second one - "^FDExp:" is unique, but "^FS" is not unique. There are occurances of "^FS" before and after "^FDExp:".

How do I get the string to search AFTER the occurrence, not before etc?

DataGridView - Convert Nulls To Empty Strings And Display It In The Grid As Empty Strings

May 14, 2009

I have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

Anyway To Check Open MS Word Documents Filesize Of Open Document Before Saving Document?

Sep 28, 2011

I have a function on my program that allows a user to load a listbox filled with words that are matched with words inside a databank. The databank is filled with 2 string arrays and file of .jpg Pictures. The Arrays attached to each word inside the listbox are approximately one page. Each page is two paragraphs of Text(string Array) and one Picture(20Kbytes).My problem is this. When the user selects the option print all, the listbox with approximately 10255 words is selected and begins to fill a Microsoft Word Document.Because the alotted amount of space needed for the MS Word Document is approximately 5 Gbytes,I need to open about 10 Documents and insert the String Array's and Pictures into each document one at a time.Is there anyway to check the filesize of the Open Document before saving the document. This way I could check the open document inside the algorithm for 512 Mbytes of memory and save the document before the size gets above 512 Mbytes.[code]

I was wondering if there is a way to include / 'run' C++ code within VB.net I think I read somewhere about turning the C++ Code into a library and can access it that way, but not 100% sure if I did in fact read that right or if I'm dreaming things up. Basically, I want to design a basic UI, ie just a button or 2, and when the button is clicked I'd like it to use the C++ Code.

code that might bomb
Catch ex As Exception

I thought I could check Err.Number once I was out of the Try/Catch block but that doesn't work because apparently Err.Number exists within the Catch block after an exception is caught, but outside of the Catch block Err.Number is zero again. How can I do what im trying to do? Im about to NOT use try/catch and resort to On Error Resume Next (aaahhhh the days when things were simple and just worked)

Combine C# And .NET In A Solution?

Mar 2, 2012

I have a solution, Winforms, mainly composed from VB.NET projects (Wiforms, Constrols and business classes).

How, I added to it a WPF project, but wrote it in C#. Actually, every time I make a modification in the WPF C# project, I need to (re)build the C#WPF project. Is there a option to make it work like other (VB.NET) projects (accept and "see" the changes without rebuilding the C# project)?

An example:When I reference project "R.VB" in project "M.VB", I add a method "DoTest" in the "R.VB" and use that method in "M.VB" without compile errors.

If I add "DoTest" in the C# WPF Control and try to use it in "M.VB" project, I recieve a compile error "DoTest" is not a member od "R.C#Class".
