I have Windows Vista Business on my machine and running visual studio 2005 (Version 8.0.50727.867 (vsvista.050727-8600)) as well as "ENU Service Pack 1 (KB926601)" and "Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition - ENU (KB932232) "I'm trying to connect to SQL server 2008 Express via Visual Basic and I've gone through all the forums to try to resolve my issue and it seems that I have to install " Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Support" However, when I try to do this I keep on getting the error "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the programme to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the programme.

first of all sorry if this is not the right place to post this question. yesterday i bought Microsoft visual studio 2008, so as to develo web application, then i installed it in my pc. after installing it in my pc, i have seen microsoft Sql Server 2005, in my start menu programs. wow that is nice, but now i want to create database and then connect it with visual studio 2008, so how can do that? this is my frist time to use sql server, so where can i create tables and databases? and how can i connect it with visual studio 2008?

I am new to SQLSever, Visual Studio and Visual Basic. I have read through Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 by Michael Halvorson and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 by Lars Powers and Mike Snell. These books mention the ability to use SQLServer as the DB but I am not clear on the process. I am not knew to programming an have had training in OO programming but have never done any OO programing professionally. So, you can assume I am new to OO programing.
I have created an SQL DB using the Server Explorer in VS, and created a Windows form with Labels, TextBoxes, and ComboBoxes for the application's user to add the demographic information about a new employee. I created a new query with the Query builder that is in the Employee table of the DB which contains all the field for the record for inserting. I have a few questions to understand the process for inserting into the DB.
The DB fields are defined as numeric(6, 0), nurmeric(5, 2), and char(30) for some examples.
The maxlength on the form windows are in sync with the maxlength of the DB for the various fields.
1. What is the process to update the DB with the fields from the form?
2. Do I need to declare and set the results from the form first? If so, how do I call the function (query) that I created in the Employee table.
3. The emp_num I would like to be a dynamically incrementing number starting from 1000. How do I make this a dynamic? The emp_num is also the key on the Employee table.
4. I have a decimal field on the Employee table to hold emp_rate (pay rate). Does the user enter the decimal on the Form or is this resolved by SQL to take the 7 numbers and insert the decimal beause of the table's field definition?

I am trying to connect to SQL Server Express locally using VB.NET 2005. I pulled my connection string directly from the app.config file. When I run, I get NO errors and the connection states returns open, however the commands are not being processed.

Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

First let me statethat my VB skills are appalling. Havent touched it since VB3 Ok here is the scenario. we want to be able to give our first line support the ability to modify AD groups BUT WITHOUT giving the acess or powers in the AD console. I have written command line scripts to do this and it works fine. Un fortunately we have people that think that if it dont have a OK NEXT CANCEL button it aint Windows :(

I'm using an MS Access database which has password (database password, not a workgroup or smth). I'm using 13 characters - with no special signs- only letters. When I try to open the DB from access it works fine, but when I try to run my Windows Form application from Visual Studio Connection String, I get a message that "Not a valid password".

I'm using VB 2008 Express for our College Project. I'm also running SQL Server 2008 Express and have installed SQL Server Management Studio and used it to create my database. I have SQL 2008 Express and Visual Basic 2008 Express runing on XP Professional SP2. When I select add new data source from VB I don't have the option to connect to SQL Server 2008 express to get at the to SQL Server Database. I also notice that the OLE DB connector is not availble as a data connector. Can somebody please confirm that VB 2008 Express can connect directly to SQL Server 2008 Express and how I can achieve it.

I've been doing a self studies on visual basic and I thought I've learned a lot but still I realized that I still have something more to learn. I want to learn the basic fundamentals on SQL for its database operations such as adding,editing, and deleting records. I would say I'm new to SQL because as far as I've used VB, I've been using LINQ(Language Integrated Queries) for database operation. I cannot get the VB monthcalendar control to obey any of the properties I set for it, or the commands I give it programatically. It works (sort of - but with obvious bugs) in the state it arrives when copied to a new form straight out of the toolbox, eg when I click on a date etc, however if I set the background colour in Properties (or programatically), or try to change the BoldedDates programatically (as per numerous examples I have found) it ignores me!
I can create a brand new project, new form, add the monthcalendar out of the toolbox, change its properties in the Properties window, & when I run it the changed properties (eg background colour) are totally ignored.

I've been looking all over the internet trying to figure out how to incorporate Speech Recognition into a program I'm designing in Visual Basic.I've downloaded and installed: Visual Basic 2008 express edition, Visual Basic 2010 express edition, Speech SDK 5.1, and the Windows SDK version 7.1.
I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong, or if maybe I have to use a different programming language like C# or C++...I don't know. I've looked through sample codes and tried a few, but in both Visual basic 2008 and 2010 they say the terms aren't recognized. like System.speech isn't recognized at all.

I would like to access to a SQL Server Database from my Visual Studio project.
I have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my PC and I have a database with some tables.
In Visual Studio, I open the Database Explorer and I try to create a database connection.
The Add connection dialog box proposes to enter a database *file name* but I cannot select a database *server* and a database *name*.
Perhaps, is it a restriction because it is a free version ?
Within Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, I can select a database *server* and a database *name* !

I recently got into this article. It makes a chat server and people can connect to it like an AIM. The problem how would I disconnect from the server from the client. Because if I close the client application when its connected to the server it will crash the server as well. Please let me know if anyone has any solutions.
