Using MSDN documentation on creating Control Arrays in VB.net I proceeded to create a control array based on my UserControl. I modified the code programmatically to Loop through a For-Next loop to create 6 objects using the same UserControl. After creating these objects, I proceed to perform graphics on each control to draw a rectangle of which is in the center of the control by using a Timer_Tick event.
View 1 RepliesI have an application that has a grid of rich text boxes on a panel. I would like to access and modify the text in the various rich text boxes during run time. I know this has been brought up a bazillon times over the years, but I would have done this as a series of control arrays in VB 6. Below is a simplified representation of how the textboxes would appear in a panel if control arrays were availble:
rtbA(1) rtbB(1) rtbC(1)
rtbA(2) rtbB(2) rtbC(2)
rtbA(3) rtbB(3) rtbC(3)
I find that I can access the properties of the rich text boxes via panel1.controls.item(x).text, for example, where x is the control index assigned by the panel when I dropped the controls on it.
Since I created the rich text boxes at design time and dropped them on the panel, it has arbitrarily assigned the index values, and they are not in the index order that I would desire.
How does one re-assign a control's index at design time for a controls collection on a panel? And if one has 24 text boxes on one panel, is there a way to break them into subgroups, such as rtbA(), rtbB(), rtbC() with their own index values?
I'm having trouble getting controls in non active tabs to update. I have a tab control with 12 tabs. Each tab displays a custom calendar of days for each month. For each of the days I used label controls. Now the trouble im having is when I re-size the window I want the day labels in each tab to re-size accordingly. I have the re-size function written and working but for some reason it will only re-size the active tab. In order for me to have the labels on the other tabs update to the re-size I need to open each tab as to load it then it will update the controls.I've tried putting Application.DoEvents() in my re-size loop but that didn't work. How can I get the other tabs to update / redraw the controls without having to open the tabs first?

I am trying to use several Class arrays to hold values that I will cycle through at a later point to perform some calculations. I need to change the array sizes to fit the data as it is entered. I am using one procedure to set the first element of each array and then a separate procedure to pass the additional values as they are entered.
Until my last attempt at changing my code, my StartBalance sub seemed to work, I could step through and see the values assigned to the class arrays in the code block. However, when it moved on to the Transaction sub, it did not recognize that the first set of values were set, the array shows zero values for index 1.
I have gone through several changes trying different ideas from reading blogs and articles, but I guess I am not understanding how these work. I even used the class arrays directly instead of the Property procedures to see if I would get a different result, but I do not.
I believe I must be approaching this incorrectly and though I can find dozens of examples of setting class variables and even a couple on using arrays as class variable, I can not find any that show how to then pass values to those arrays.

First I click on the button to open the port. Then I do this code so whenever I receive data from a serial port connection, "Hello" string is written in the text field.. I debugged it, made sure COM Port is open, and data seems to pass to the textbox.. because when I put my mouse over to display the values inside the textbox it shows that "Hello" is stored.. and I tried doing the textbox1.refresh() but still nothing happens.. the textbox remains empty!

View 2 RepliesHere's my situation: I have a control with motion graphics (for the sake of simplicity, a 'video player' control) in my project. Think of a PictureBox with constantly-changing images. In front of this will sit a second control (such as a second PictureBox of the same dimensions). The topmost PictureBox will be drawn to in its Paint event.
I need to draw very few elements, and the bottom control is updated much more frequently than I need for this drawing. So these elements are drawn to the topmost control. Think of a news broadcast, where they have live video in the background, with a news channel logo, news ticker, and sometimes gradient visible in front.
I'm trying to create that 'foreground' control, and the closest I believe I have gotten so far is the following:

The 'Opacity' property in the code above is a sort of "scaling factor." The image drawn to the top control may, in different parts of the image, have any alpha value from full transparent to a full 255. This 'Opacity' property is applied to the entire image being drawn, scaling the alpha values of each pixel.

I have a panel in my form, with several controls that are added at runtime.I want to be able to create graphics that appear on top of those controls. Right now when I use my code, the graphics appear fine on the panel, but are hidden underneath the controls within that panel.

Obviously the text is not really located on the panel, but looks like it as it's drawn on top of the panel. So, when the panel or form that the panel is attached to moves, I lose the text. I though I could just call back to writing the text when the panel/form arrives at the correct place, while clunky, it works to a degree. I was hoping there was a better way of doing this, so that the text doesn't disappear when moving controls and I don't have to make repeated calls to the same drawing text over and over and over...
Edit: Should probably add that there will be 5 different panels each with their own custom drawn text, and all 5 need to move at the same time...
I have inserted a form into my project that a friend sent over. The form works but if I add more controls to it they are not displaying.
The controls are all there in the <form>.designer.vb file but are simply not displaying when I run the form.
I have looked around the net but can find no reference to a similiar problem.
I have a program written with VB.NET 2008 that includes a large number of dynamic controls in a form. When I drag the corner of my form, I want to resize every controls according to the new form size. It works very well, except that the controls are repainted one by one, instead of waiting at the end of my fonction and do a single repaint.
I did a lot of research on the NET without any good results:
- "Form1.DoubleBuffered = true" does not have any effect
- "Form1.SuspendLayout" does not have any effect
- "SendMessage(Me.Handle, WM_SETREDRAW, New IntPtr(CInt(False)), IntPtr.Zero)" suspended repaints but left the entire window messy.
I am running out of ideas. Here is a sample module to test if your trick works. Just try to resize the form, you will see how long it takes to repaint every control one by one:

When I add or modify controls on the form the graphics are redrawn many times over.The more graphics that are drawn the slower the machine gets.
View 1 RepliesI'm having some problems with custom controls and anchors today. I made a custom control containing a picture box and a vertical scroll bar. When I adjust the form the custom control outer area (the blank part) will adjust to the size of the form but the picture box and scroll bar do not. I have the picture box anchored to all sides and the vertical scroll bar anchored to the right side. They just will not adjust with the control when it is resized on the form.

What properties of the controls must I use so that I can run this program in any size computer and still occupy the full screen i.e the size is proportionately resized depending on screen size.

I have a form with many controls that are binded to a datasource. when some of these values change, they impact aspects of the form itself like the backgroud color or the title. There is a filter applied to it so it only displays certain records (this is important).when I change something and save the data I need to update the filter to show all the previous records plus the current one.All that works great, but the problem is: saving the data or changing the filter makes the controls take a new value based on the new record and go through the subs that each one have to modify the aspect of the form. This happens because if I save the data first, then the current record does not conform to the filter and all the data in the form changes, or if I change the filter first, we go to the first record of the set.
After that I return to the correct record and everything looks fine, but going to all the changes makes the app halt for a moment.Is there a way that I can stop the controls in the form form updating to their binding data while saving or changing the filter in the bindingsource?

I have a maximized form that has controls at the top of it and a large DataGridView that is docked below all the controls. Its kind of like the Ribbon in MS Office. The controls cover about 1/4 of the screen at the top. I would like a way for the user to click a button to hide all the controls then automatically expand into the place the controls were so the user can view more data in the DataGridView and visa versa. For example, in MS Office Excel you can hide the ribbon by clicking a tiny button that has "^" on it.
I'm not very familiar with all the controls in Visual Studio so I would like to hear some recommendations. Is this situation ideal for a SplitContainer or ToolStripContainer or am I way off base here?

The project I'm working on (the same one I'm always asking about) has tabs as the main navigation. I've made some User Controls to sit above the tabs in an attempt to reduce the number of overall controls that are being used (to great success). In the attached image, the left and right arrows are custom drawn in the paint even, I also have a scroll timer that scrolls the text if the length exceeds the buttons width as measured by Graphics.MeasureString.
I want to restrict the text from red line to red line so when the text scrolls it does not interfere with the arrow indicators, can the text area be overridden to some custom region?
I am trying to use (and this may be my problem already) e.Graphics.CopyFromScreen() in the OnPaint() method of my control to prepare a background onto which I can draw the content of the control. The goal is a tool-tip with rounded corners and other specific features to replace the default Windows tool tip.
Ideally the tool tip could be antialiased and blended into the backdrop, however at a pinch I could tolerate an aliased boundary. This may also be necessary as the control will often be covering a control with an OpenGL overlay and the whole blending procedure may end up a nightmare.
I have created a custom user control, a persistent instance of which belonds to my applications's main form, overriding the OnPaint and OnPaintBackground methods. The application of transparency however is challenging. As I understand, the graphics object passed to the paint method starts with a copy of the current VisibleClipBounds, where generally the first move is to clear the control with a solid colour and start drawing the main features. My first thought was to bypass the fill and start drawing on the captured background. For the first redraw this works fine, but subsequent redraws keep the previous content instead of re-capturing the backdrop. I hoped that CopyFromScreen would specifically eliminate the currently drawing control from its capture so as to start from a clean base but this is not the case, it captures the rectangle of the new location including the image of the previous location if it is in the bounds.
I'm trying to update the UI from a background thread without invoking the control. Mainly because I've tried to do so and it never worked from a class. It worked just fine within the form class, but froze up in the class. I didn't receive any errors, it just lost its multi-threaded-ness.

There's very little information on MSDN about this class in general and every example on the web I've seen so far, has nothing to do with classes.
Lets say that I had three TextBox's and they are named TextBox1, TextBox2, and TextBox3, is there a way to do like TextBox And Rand(1,3).Text = Nothing?
