Convert A Module To Class Library?
May 21, 2011
I have a single solution with 2 projects. One project contains all my forms and some other modules and the other project has 1 module with 1 giant class in it. I try to click on properties and change the output type, but it won't let me make it a Class Library, the only 2 options are "Windows Application" or "Console Application". The startup object is the module, and the project has references to a socket component.

I've an app that starts to work from a module wich should load a form an do other things with a class library who raise an event an the form shoud cath it.The problem is that applicarion.run(frmMain) displays the form in the same thread the the code stops work while the form is open. And I need that the app works in this way because the user need to send files to the app using args and this avoid that the app init another instance of it (in other code) and update the form with the info when the event is raised.[code]

My objective is to take a .vb class file that is used on multiple local applications/web sites and convert it to a .dll file that would would be deployed to the servers that we use.The code all works, I can build my class library project with Visual Studios 2008 Pro and end up with a DLL.I can then drag and drop the DLL into any application or website and use it successfully What I'm missing is how to compile it correctly so it will do two things;
1. Get it to show up as a .NET component
2. Get it to NOT scream at me when I try to reference it.
I think part of my problem is that I've been looking up assemblies and dll's when maybe I should have been looking at component authoring.No, I don't want to just stick with the drag and drop into local bins. I might as well just copy and paste the original .vb at that point.

I have to convert a set of C# classes (class library) to SQL tables to be used by SQL Server, so that the data can be stored in a database and manipulated through the database.The problem is that the number of these classes is big (more than 1000 classes),and it would take a long time to setup manually such a database schema (tables,ndexes, stored procedures, etc.) - not to mention the class hierarchies that I need to maintain.

I' ve got a short question concerning BackgroundWorker.Is it possible to have the main code for the BGW in one class and the long process for the BGW (DoWork) in another class or module?
I couldn't find anything helpful on the internet.Here is my code - DoWork in a separate class doesn't work:

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

I've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops.When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".

I have made a class using New->Class Library. I have 2 constructors, 1 function (that computes length of circle), one subroutine that computes area of circle, and main subroutine.
Public Class Class1
Class Circle
Dim rad As Double
[CODE]...
My problem is when I try to run the program: No errors of syntax.
What I must do? I need to right click in solution explorer add new item->add->class and copy here this code?
After I write the code I chose from the vb menu: Build->Build Solution_name
Before writing the code I choose File->New->and selected class library then save all to save as a project.
Or class library is only a dll file that runs with a windows forms application. (that is added after i write the code for write library).

i want to extend the integer class to a method that increments current integer value by 2. I create a console application and a second module which contains the extension method.
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Module StringExtensions
<Extension()>
[code]....
and everything works fine. The extension method module can be imported to any other project (Project-->add existing item --> select the vb file that contains the extension method module) and works fine too. But the code is accessible to other users. Is there a method to convert the extension method module to a dll and adding it to other projects as a reference. I tried to do it with creating a class project and pasting the code of the extension method module and compile the dll and then added it as reference to another project and imported the class with the keyword imports, but it didn't work.

Some of my co-workers make extensive use of the VB.net concept of Modules. Unfortunately, I just don't 'get it'. I see no benefit in using modules over shared classes. When would it be preferable to use a module?

Use a DLL rather than a module so that if I updated the DLL it would propagate over all the projects that used it. I want to create a library of functions and subroutines that may be used in many projects (such as my gradient and some error messages).

This is purely a coding practice question concerning VB.NET structures. Where do you keep one?As an example, I've created a structure for the simple purpose of keeping information organized, I'd like this structure to be stand-alone, not belonging to any class so I wouldn't have to access it through SomeClass.MyStructure but rather simply MyStructure. So, do I keep it in a separate class and import it into my namespace? Do I keep it in a module (Static class, essentially)? Do I just make a separate VB.NET code file and place is there (I would like it to live in a separate file). Just to clarify, I need this structure to be accesses by the whole application, not just a single class.

I'm working on a program that I have 90% finish.Its basically validates certain information such as credit card, telephone numbers, name etc...
Im trying to create a separate class 'IsValid'to figure out if the creditcard number is valid (is equal to 12 characters only).
This will be initiated with a "Validate button".I know how to do this in the mainform just using an If statement.
But I'm trying to figure out how to valid date this and return it to the form and possibly change cardnumber.forecolor = color.red

Recently i studied about Module and i think it is a Shared Class and all its members are Shared by default and we can not change that. I have query that is it doing something special that a class can not do ? I have just tried with a simple example and found that classes even do a Module's job.Below is my code:

I am using Joe Mayo's book Visual Studio 2010 A beginners guide and in it he suggests that the default Module Module1 should be replaced with a Class and that it was a hold over from previous versions of VS. How can I change VS's behavior so it defaults to Class Program instead?

Im going through the 2008 Express tutorials on methods and classes. Since the advantage of subs, functions, methods, etc is their reusability, how does one save them and later import them into an application?
Also when one writes a class, how is it tested without being part of a form? Besides testing a class, why would one wants to write a class without a form, if it is to be published for a user?

I have two projects; A and B, where B needs to use some classes that are in project A. Hence, I added B to A's solution, and in B I added a reference to project A.
Is that sensible? Or should I rather put those classes in a class library?
I see that if I further want to open form/program B from a menu option in project A, then A needs a reference to B. Which would not be possible if B already had a reference to A. However if I use the class library for the common classes, then it's ok as B doesn't need the A reference.
Does this sound logical? It would be nice to know what are typical reasons for putting projects in the same solution, and if it's advised to use libraries aggressively to refactor common code between two projects, even if it's just a couple of classes.. Yet I've never made my own library, so a bit unsure on when to use it.

I have been given an ASP.Net assignment at work because I had taken a few courses a couple of years ago. Currently, there are no ASP.Net programmers for me to ask here and I have searched several places (including Pro ASP Net book) to find a solution but have come up empty handed.
I have a class named spErrors which takes the values passed to it. Values passed include the offending page,function/sub, and other values and stores them in property values, then calls Response.Redirect("Errors.aspx") from the page's code behind page. In Errors.aspx, the values of the error/exception trapped in the Catch statement are displayed. This works fine from a web form. My question is, how do I call a web page from a class module?
Each class module has the ErrorHandler() procedure that passes these values to the class object. In the class, there is a Write Only property named Redirect and a method called Execute() which is used to display the error page if the error occurs in another class module. Since Response.Redirect() does not work in a class module, what namespace is needed in order for this to work?
Here is the code I'm using.
In the Catch block.
Catch ex As Exception
Err.Description = ex.Message
ErrorHandler(Err, "function name")
[code]....
