I want to create a windows installer package using visual studio. It is my understanding that there was a simple way to do this in vb6, you could add an installer like you can add a new form.
How can I do this in vb.net? I downloaded and installed the Windows SDK from [url]... because it said somewhere that it could create installer packages and had tools to do so for .net
I have a finished application that is ready to be delivered to my client, I am looking for an efficient way to add my database file (i.e. .mdb file) into the installer package, thats one thing..another thing is that how can I customise the installer package to always put that .mdb in the D: drive during installation..

I have published it and have been burning the result to a cd and installed it on various computers, however it is the click once app, which has been fine till now. What I need to do now is to have the program install the .exe file and associated files (non click once app) to a specific drive on a computer or network computer. I have searched the net for instructions on how to initiate the windows installer and have failed. is there a program that you can select the source files then point to the installation folder tell it to go and an installation package gets made that I can burn to disk.

1. Pick the folder on C:\ drive where I want it installed? (ie c:\program files\myprogram)
2. I have about a dozen access databases and monarch models that I've created to work with my program. Diagnostics. View 3 RepliesI'm currently developing an application for a POS Terminal using VB.net. Our project is approaching the last stage of development and I've been tasked to create 2 installers. 1 for Initial Installation, and the other for upgrade installation.
The project is composed of several elements. These are:
1. The application executable
2. Common DLLs that we developed
3. some resources (.resx and XML)
The requirement for the upgrade installer is that only those files with modification should be installed. (i.e. if only the xml or resx files are modified those are the only items that will be reinstalled, since the size of the upgrade installer is a consideration so we cannot reinstall everything).
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 for my deployment project but I'm a bit confused about how to set the properties of each file in such a way that during the upgrade, only the files that were modified would be updated and the rest of the files will not be removed since I'm setting RemovePreviousVersion property to True. I have a hunch that I need to do something with the custom action but I haven't been able to figure it out. The upgrade installer setup is almost the same as the initial installer except that all files are excluded.I tried to acquire a copy of Phil Wilson's book (The definitive guide to Windows Installer) but its not available in our local bookstore and it would take too long to order it.
Basically while tinkering with the settings/properties there are instances where the dll was not updated and there are also times when the application exe was removed.
I already verified that the Product code is the same for both installers and that I'm sure that the version number is being incremented for each upgrade.
If I will be redoing both installers from scratch, how should I go about it?
I'm also confused about the Condition property and the transitive property.
Is there any other good free/open-source tool for documentating besides Microsoft's Sandcastle and NDoc, that is easy to use, has a GUI and generates HTML documentation?

View 1 RepliesI am using VB.NET 2002 and we have set up a test environment running SQL Server 2005. I am trying to add a reference to Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll which is required to run a DTS/SSIS package from VB.NET. However the dll does not show in my add reference listing so when I select BROWSE and select the actual DLL I get a rather long error message telling me that only 'dll' and COM components can be referenced.
The exact message is: A reference to 'C:Programs FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90SDKAssembliesMicrosoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll' could not be added. This is not a valid assembly or COM component. Only assemblies with extension 'dll' and COM components can be referenced.make sure that the file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or COM component.
When I start VS2008Prof I get a Package Load Failure "Package 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Xaml' has failed to load properly". Repairing VS and resetting ('devenv /resetsettings') it did not help.
View 3 RepliesI just finish my first application, and it is runing very nice on my computer, outsite IDE.But when I put it on another computer or in a virtual machine, i get some error and it is not running.In my application i have only controls, no dll, no nothing, except one picture.I have to mention that i have win7 on 64 bit and i use visual basic 2010 Express with netframework 4.0.
I also want to ask you what i have to do to make an install pack that contains microsoft installer and framework.I want to make a setup file with all this included.

View 7 RepliesBasically I've coded an Excel 2007 project in VB.NET 2010 that allows you to create charts with a fair amount of interactivity. I want the user to be able to save and reopen this workbook and still have that interactivity in any already-created charts, so they don't have to re-create them.
When I create the charts, I use Sheet1.Controls.AddChart(...), which returns a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Excel.Chart with which I can handle events and such. However, when I reopen the file and look through the Sheet1.Controls collection, there are no Chart objects. Accessing the charts through Sheet1.ChartObjects.Chart gives me Interop Charts, when I need the Tools Charts.

View 4 RepliesFor some reason I could never get over the look of my application, and the Microsoft controls together. Just never looked right. Nor were the controls exactly what I needed. By creating controls I can pretty much custom fit them for my application, and I love it.My question is with drawing these controls. I have 12 of them now in my current project, so I would like to make them all as efficient as possible. The biggest set back to most of them is the drawing can be a little extensive, or at least to a point where they could be more efficient. At the moment, under each paint event I have the brushes created by using blocks and then the drawing happens within them(I create all brushes first, then do the drawing, vice versa with disposing them). My question however came up when I was creating my most recent control, a SimpleList.
I experimented to see(though I'm not sure how exactly to track performance) but instead of recreating the brushes and pens etc in the paint event, I put them at the top so they're only made once, and destroyed once, rather being made and destroyed every time my control paints. My common sense tells me this is a better way of going about this but my experience can't back that up. is this the way I should be going about user drawn controls?, is there any limitations to this?(like would it be okay if I only had a limited number of brushes etc) and is the performance even that greatly impacted by making these changes that it's worth my while?

All my searches result in information about using 2005/2008 versions of Visual Studio, which seems odd if Microsoft are pushing to use Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use VS 2010. don't complicate the issue with a load of flannel. I just want to know that I need to install - this, with this SDK, these utilities and write your software in this language (ideally VB).
My problem is that I am creating system tools for windows with a good gui and I don't know how to start with it. One of my difficulties is making code for calling any window tools for example, defragment.msc, backup, system restore, registry editor(I knew there's already a thread in here but it is closed).In short, I will create a "Utility tools ALL IN ONE" for my project somewhat like a registry cleaner or advance system optimizer and the likes.
