Creating A Process From A Service?
Sep 19, 2011
I'm trying to start a process from a service (kind of an on-demand process) using the code bellow:
elproceso = New Process()
Dim informacion_inicio As New ProcessStartInfo(dataReader(2))
elproceso.StartInfo = informacion_inicio
elproceso.Start()

I have created a Windows service in VS 2005 that monitors a folder for XML files, reads some data elements from the XML using XmlDocument, then copies the files to another location. I find that when I drop 2 or more XML files into the folder simultaneously, it processes them with no problems, but when I drop the same files into the folder one at a time, I will get an error on the second file: "The process cannot access the file <my file> because it is being used by another process." If I stop my service, restart it, and drop the second file into the folder again, it works the second time. I am confident that no other program is accessing this file at the same time as my service. My impression is that the processing of file # 1 is somehow not releasing all of the resources, leading to the processing of file # 2 mistakenly thinking that it can't access that second file.
Dim FileWatcher As New FileSystemWatcher()
It points the watcher to my folder, sets up an event handler, then enables the watching:
FileWatcher.Path = InputFolderPath

I've been trying off and on for a week now to get this to work but no luck. I have completely stripped down my vb.net 2008 windows service to just create a vbs file and launch it using a process.I'm dying here. The vbs file creates and is valid. I can execute it manually, the windows service just won't run it!! I'm on a windows 7 machine and the process is compiled and installed as a 32 bit process. It is also installed as local system.
After the process tries to execute, I created a text file and it did so successfully. So, I know that the service isn't crashing out.[code]....

In Windows Vista/7/2008/2008R2, is it at all possible to launch a process in a user's session from a service? Specifically, the local session would be most useful.Everything I've been reading seems to say this isn't possible, but I figured I'd ask here before giving up completely.My service signs on as Local System.

I am working on a Windows Service project that is supposed to start automatically with Windows and it has a timer to check if a certain process is created (in this case "iexplorer") the service should terminate that process. In addition, the user should not be able to stop the windows service.
I was able to create the process and make start with Windows. I changed the property (CanStop) to False but that did not help because after a few tries the servise stops. I used a For-Next loop in the timer to check for the process to terminate but unfortunatly, it didn't work. The code I used is:
Dim theProcesses() As Process = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessesByName("Iexplore")
For Each currentProcess As Process In theProcesses

I have a service that needs to run several independent processes, my problem is that it only creates up to 23, from the 24th and so on the processes are not started and a DW20.EXE window error is displayed, it only says that the there has been an unhandled exception and that the proceess is going to be closed. Inside the process.start block there is no error so I guess it could be some limitation somewhere.

I have a Web Service with Just one Web Method that returns a boolean value and a function When a client application consumes this web Service, I first want to return a value true and then continue with the remaining process. I was googling and didn't find anything that I can understand. In one of the message posts I saw threading as one option. I tried that too.

In Win7, I am running a service which launches a process which hosts the office-library (Word 2007) for the purpose doing a mail-merge. There is no interface anywhere. When I launch the mail-merge process with the service as the parent, Word cannot create a document using my existing mail-merge Word doc. At first I thought the problem was with UAC so I changed the manifest to run as admin but it seems like that was irrelevant. When I launch the process from explorer or a non-service process instead of the service it works and is able to load Word and a document successfully. I used Process Monitor to see if I could get some clues as to what could be happening. As far as I can tell, when the proc is launched by the service it is using system profile since I see file paths such as c:windowssystem32configsystemprofile and c:windows mp instead of my user profile folders C:UsersUserNameAppDataRoamingApplication etc. My service is running as my username and not localsystem. I check the username using WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name and I get my correct username regardless of service/non-service invocation. I tried changing the Word startup path in the Application object but again it only succeeds in non-service mode. I tried creating the process from the service in both shell mode and non-shell mode and they both behave similarly. I think the problem could lie in the fact that when the proc is launched by the service the user belongs to NT Authority/Service but when launched any other way it is NT

I have a Windows Service that needs to start other processes under a user context other than that used by the service. I've seen other posts related to this but have seen no resolutionI've tried many things and have been unsuccessful in starting the process from a Windows Service when a username, password is supplied. orking as it's a requirement of our system to do this and it worked fine until recently and only fails on Vista and Windows 7 (works on XP).
The following code is used to start the process.
Dim P As New Process
P.StartInfo.Domain = Domain

My first post as an absolute last resort. In 8 years of programming, I have never posted to a programming forum and have always been able to wiggle my way out of any diffficult project...Until this project.Every step of this project is new for me (Windows service, ini file, IIS, FTP, cmd line params, comparing file specs programmatically, using a timer, and even VB.NET is still confusing to me after several years in VB6 ). Dreading posting b/c I have so many questions. I have finished the internet, been to the end and back. Found endless suggestions of code and links and forums and only gotten more lost in the process.
I am trying to create a VB.NET app, that most likely will need to be a service, for our external clients' PCs. These PCs are not connected to our network. This app will be invisible to the user and will need to perform several tasks including:

The original code came from AutoItI just rewrote what was necessary for VB.NET and added the structures and throws. If successful the PID of the process started is returned, else an exception is thrown. No imports needed.

I've spent alot of time digging thru the forums to research this problem, and to get the right code. I'm wondering now if this is a system configuration problem, or something else with my code.
Firstly, i'll tell you that i've already put the service account on my machine local security policy that says 'allow to act with/as operating system'.
Running this code from an application, it works just fine:

We have a WCF service hosted in IIS that currently calls a VB6 DLL to do part of its job. This works fine, but we can't deploy the service to a 64-bit target environment without configuring IIS to run it in a 32-bit worker process.I am currently investigating ways around that restriction. Porting the VB6 DLL to .NET is not possible for various reasons, so I created an ActiveX EXE wrapper around the DLL in VB6, so that the service can run in 64-bit and the VB6 parts in 32-bit.
When I tested the service I got this error:
Type: System.UnauthorizedAccessException
Message: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {9AE7303B-D159-43F6-B1A5-52D297581820} failed due to the following error: 80070005.
After some Googling I found that this is due to either:
Calling an MS Office component
DCOM permissions not being configured
NTFS file permissions not allowing read/exec access to the IIS worker process identity (ASPNET in my environment)
Of these:
Definitely not applicable Also not applicable; I am not hosting the EXE in DCOM or COM+, just a simple COM out-of-process activation
This looks likely; however, I checked the permissions, and NTFS reports that the Users group (which ASPNET is a member of) does indeed have read/exec access to the file I tried calling the EXE from a unit test fixture, which is executed in my admin-level account rather than the IIS worker process account, and it worked fine, so the error is definitely something to do with permissions. I'm not sure what to do next.
UPDATE:The IIS virtual directory is configured for Anonymous+Windows access; the WCF service uses only Anonymous authentication, the Windows authentication is for the VS debugger. Task Manager reports that the aspnet_wp.exe process is definitely running in the ASPNET account.I explicitly granted Read and Execute access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on all the COM exes and dlls involved. This made no difference.
I explicitly granted Local Launch and Local Activation access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on the relevant interfaces in the DCOM configuration. This made no difference either.Keep trying to get this working somehow.Go the whole hog and host the EXE in COM+.Give up. Tell users that the WCF service must be configured to run in a 32-bit app pool on 64-bit Windows.

I thought that creating a simple system service under VB .NET would be a piece of cake. Boy, was I wrong. First, I find general postings through Google that say you should use the Windows.Forms.Timer. Then, I found conflicting information that says you have to derive the timer from a timer class through code to make it work. Then, people are reporting all sorts of trouble using the various types of threads available. I can't debug threads using the VS 2010 Just-in-Time debugger for obvious reasons (although, I don't know if there is an alternate method to doing this).My project is an application launcher (similar to cron) that will fire off periodically within a certain amount of seconds. I am trying to use the Process.Start() method. I have a Beep() function as the first instruction, and the Process.Start, along with a Process.WaitForExit method to make it block as the last instruction. I had my code doing this through timers, but now I am starting to use threads. No difference in execution. The over-ridden OnStart method does kick off (as I am certain through debugging), but nothing ever happens when starting the service in production, as if it were ignoring all my code. Putting loops and logic in the OnStart method yields a process that won't start. I know it is a threading issue, but I also know it must be mandatory to use threads. I am now dumbfounded as to how to make this work. I am curious to know the solution.
In addition to the service class, I have a ServiceInstaller and ProcessInstaller implemented that I copied verbatim from MSDN.Here is some of the code I am trying to work with. Note that this simply reflects the current state of my code in trying to implement the logic within a thread instead of a timer (which to me would be optimal):[code]

Is there any software to automate the process of creating vb.net windows softwares or asp.net websites. As i am new i want it to be created automatically. Or can anyone create the project for me? I will give the details and upload the files (if Present). I got this thought when i asked the following question:
My boss has given me a task to create an asp.net website. The website should take some data through text fields, combobox, etc.. and then generate a report and graph. Before they used to store the information in an excel sheet and then generate a report and graph. He showed me the excel sheet and the reports and chart (in pdf). I don't know how to do it.

What I am looking to do is write a VB.NET program, as a service that reports anything on client1 that I want (say the fact it is online) to a database on the internet, so I can look on management1 and see the online status of the machine (assuming management1 has a connection to the online database).
What is being reported doesn't matter, what I am looking at is a starting point to create a system like that. I have googled obviously and come up with nothing, I'd just like a "starting point" or some documentation to look at for creating something like this. The service doesn't look too difficult but the periodic reporting of online status or ANYTHING to any kind of database is not something I am sure how to deal with.
I already have setup a VBS that reports information to an ASP script that then places it in a database but I don't know how I would create say a "keep alive" connection for a vb.net service.

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I have a service made from VB2008. It works fine on my station and on several others. However, on some stations, I get an "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly". The service includes a log writing procedure in the OnStart event but the service crashes before even getting there. This is really weird because, as I say, the service runs fine on several stations. At the moment, the service is a full-trust app, is set to logon at Local System level and has the following manifest settings:

I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).
