I want to create some sort of method of creating a web service that will run automatically and run DB queries and some API calls which will then store data that I can use/call without taking the processing or time penalty of doing it every time a user access my web service. how to implement something like this

View 9 RepliesThis is annoying. I'm trying to put a wrapper around some functionality that uses a web service to return some information. The intention is to wrap all of that communication into a dll such that the user can simply call functions from the dll to get back information, without needing to care about the service.As far as I can tell, that isn't possible, because the service information, as far as bindings and endpoints, HAS to exist in the app.config of the program that references the dll. That means that anybody using this dll won't just be able to add a reference to it and use it, like they would with any other kind of dll, they must also edit their app.config to add in a bunch of information. That's a simple copy and paste job, but it's incredibly unfriendly, and exposes some of the internal workings of the dll to casual inspection.

The database is in SQL Server 2008 and I use Visual Studio 2010 using VB.net and was hoping that upon addition of a new product, it would automatically generate a folder assigned to that product's ID.I haven't found anything online that would suggest that this is a possibility, but it would make it a lot easier for me. So that when the check box is true, columns 1 and 3 turn different colours, and when false, go to a yellow colour.However, when I "re-insert" my DGV info from my text file, the check boxes come back correctly - as true and false on the right rows - but columns 1 and 3 don't change colour. I've tried a "DataGridView1.Refresh" option but not getting it to work.The DGV is unbound. I need it to recognise which check boxes are true and update automatically when the information is opened from a text file.

My first post as an absolute last resort. In 8 years of programming, I have never posted to a programming forum and have always been able to wiggle my way out of any diffficult project...Until this project.Every step of this project is new for me (Windows service, ini file, IIS, FTP, cmd line params, comparing file specs programmatically, using a timer, and even VB.NET is still confusing to me after several years in VB6 ). Each row has a header, so far so good. The first row exixt of calender data and I planned it to use them as my x-axis labeling. But somehow excel uses them as variables and changes them in to a third bar. Which is not what I had in mind when copied this litle piece of code.[code]

View 4 RepliesI thought that creating a simple system service under VB .NET would be a piece of cake. Boy, was I wrong. First, I find general postings through Google that say you should use the Windows.Forms.Timer. Then, I found conflicting information that says you have to derive the timer from a timer class through code to make it work. Then, people are reporting all sorts of trouble using the various types of threads available. I can't debug threads using the VS 2010 Just-in-Time debugger for obvious reasons (although, I don't know if there is an alternate method to doing this).My project is an application launcher (similar to cron) that will fire off periodically within a certain amount of seconds. I am trying to use the Process.Start() method. I have a Beep() function as the first instruction, and the Process.Start, along with a Process.WaitForExit method to make it block as the last instruction. I had my code doing this through timers, but now I am starting to use threads. No difference in execution. The over-ridden OnStart method does kick off (as I am certain through debugging), but nothing ever happens when starting the service in production, as if it were ignoring all my code. Putting loops and logic in the OnStart method yields a process that won't start. I know it is a threading issue, but I also know it must be mandatory to use threads. I am now dumbfounded as to how to make this work. I am curious to know the solution.
In addition to the service class, I have a ServiceInstaller and ProcessInstaller implemented that I copied verbatim from MSDN.Here is some of the code I am trying to work with. I am creating a small admin reporting tool that gathers certain information on some PCs. Unfortuantly the user that is running the tool doesnt have access and I cant give access to those particular machines. What I have done is created a user on these machines that can get this information.I would like to then have the reporting tool run certain parts of the code as this user so the information can be obtained, without any intervention from the user running the tool. Can I hardcode this user into the code so that it runs the code as the user?

I am using VB2008 .NET3.5.I have a combobox that has a selection for a unit of measure. What I want to happen is when that is changes the labels that have a unit of measure change to reflect the change. There are 15 labels total that need to be changed and all there names are the only ones in the project that start with a X if that helps at all.
I would like to avoid creating a bunch of labels and changing the visible property and just change the text value of each one. I have just started learning VB.NET
What I am looking to do is write a VB.NET program, as a service that reports anything on client1 that I want (say the fact it is online) to a database on the internet, so I can look on management1 and see the online status of the machine (assuming management1 has a connection to the online database).
What is being reported doesn't matter, what I am looking at is a starting point to create a system like that. I have googled obviously and come up with nothing, I'd just like a "starting point" or some documentation to look at for creating something like this. The service doesn't look too difficult but the periodic reporting of online status or ANYTHING to any kind of database is not something I am sure how to deal with.
I already have setup a VBS that reports information to an ASP script that then places it in a database but I don't know how I would create say a "keep alive" connection for a vb.net service.

I am using tab pages (Tabcontrol), and I have about 10 tabs with within the control. What I have done is created a dynamic control that will populate in each tab page once the tab is selected. I am using a split container and in my split container.panel 1 is where all my buttons and search functionality will be. In my split container.panel2 to is where the main DGV control will be. I have got this to function properly, however now I am unable to add anything to my split container.panel1. I would like to add diffrent labels and buttons in the panel1 one without putting another panel on top of the split container.panel1, and also if i do this when I resize my container the panel will just sit there. I am using the selected index changed event to get my split container to show in each of the diffrent tabs

this works fine to trap out numbers from letters but the problem i am getting is when the program calls uppon LastName it is recording 0 and wanted to know if there is a way of getting past this ..... so basically i need a way to allow letter but not numbers and symbols and then dispay a pernolised error message but at the same time use Stream writer to save was the answer is in a .txt file.

As you can see, it is receiving a single piece of data from a remote SQL server, I then need to run this data through the above calculations (Seen in the PHP file) although the answers I'm getting are incorrect.
