Jul 15, 2009I have a function that is called getWinTemp, it is below, the point in this is to create a temp file in the directory and then stuff it full of calculations and then delete it when the code has finished with it, does this code do that in .net??

With such simple code, the last line in temp.seq is truncated as attached and the size of the file is smaller than temp.fxl. See attached files. What do I need to do on the above code. Is VB.NET failing to write 1024 characters on one line.

this works fine to trap out numbers from letters but the problem i am getting is when the program calls uppon LastName it is recording 0 and wanted to know if there is a way of getting past this ..... so basically i need a way to allow letter but not numbers and symbols and then dispay a pernolised error message but at the same time use Stream writer to save was the answer is in a .txt file.
Pass Information To A Form?
Sep 28, 2011i have a form that I need to do two separate functions, however about 95% of the code is the same it's just that last 5% so I don't want to create two forms. What I would like to do is when I click on a button to open the form pass it a variable or something so I can determine which of the two buttons were used to open the form.
Basically if Button1 is clicked do this if button2 was clicked do that...

what is this .pfx file? after removing it from my application & closing the solution it started giving me errors & i was unable to re-run the application until i restored the file & added it to the solution.

Retrieve Information From A Binary File, Alter That Information, And Put It Back Into A New File?
Aug 27, 2009I am using VB2005 and trying to put an application together.What it needs to do is retrieve information from a binary file, possibly alter that information, and put it back into a new file.The file is a .wav file with data appened to the end. There is an additional section at the end of the .wav file which stores xml data.I have found that if I open this in a hex editor and make a 1:1 swap on any of the bytes that the application that the file is for can still read the XML.If I tried to add or remove characters from the XML then it would not read. I located a header byte and incremented it to resolve this.
This worked as an excellent bandage to do conversions where the data always needed to be changed to the same thing.What I have been asked to do is build logic that allows for different things to happen depending upon what data is contained within the file.The method that I am currently trying to impliment is:
Read through the file with a system.io.binaryreader
Searche for a bytestream that will signal data is coming
For example:

And then extract all the data till the end of element marker "<" It seemed like there should be a better way and I was looking for some insight. If I proceed with this method, I will have to read the file one time to gather the information and then a second time to write it all out with the header modified for length.This is my first experiene with working with binary files in this way.Also,I've been experiementing with building a string and slapping it back in at the end using the binarywriter.write(string) method.I noticed that it was putting in header characters before the string.These seem to change if I change the length of the string.At one point it was d0 07. Later it became e7 07. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this header from being inserted?
I tried a for each loop to grab all of the characters from the string, convert them to a byte array and deposit the byte array into the file, but the header remained the same. When I write the byte array generated from a system.io.binaryreader I do not get this header.

Temp Directory Maybe Not The Best Place To Install Log File On XP?
Jul 21, 2010The following code for installing log messages has worked on Windows 7 and XP, until I came across an XP machine where someone had deleted the Temp file under Documents and Settings/ComputerName/. Is there a safer location to install a log file?Path.GetTempPath doesn't seem to be the best idea.

VS 2005 - Cannot Delete TEMP File (Being Used By Another Process)
Mar 23, 2010I am trying to create an MDB as a temp file to save some tables and query them. After creating, I can't delete it ... Even before it is actually used. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Using Delegates To Pass Information Back To UI From Custom Socket Class?
Oct 6, 2010I am in the process of prototyping a small sockets application, which monitors IT infrastructure (due to in-house financial and deployment restrictions, I am unable to utilise an existing commercial or open-source solution). Basically, I have a server application and associated agent process for communicating heart-beat data to the server. The server application implements a TCP socket class (TCPDevice), which is called from a WinForm. I am aware of the restriction on updating the UI from processes running on separate threads, and that the preferred technique for acheiving this is via the use of Delegates in conjunction with the Invoke method. Having had very little need previously for using Delegates (apart from of course std windows events and the BackGroundWorker control), I am at a loss as to how to do this in the context of my application, and would appreciate some assistance, although it has occurred to me that I could use the backgroundworker for marshalling updates to the UI.
Eventually the application will need to update a grid of devices via feeds from the defined agents, however for the purpose of this exercise simply updating a status bar on the UI will suffice. The section of the code which I believe is relevant to propogating the code to the form is contained in the OnDataReceived method.Below is a code excerpt from the protoype app which should put the above into appropriate context:

Nov 10, 2010Right now I upload a temp image file, delete the original, and then rename the temp to the original. Is there any way to rename without deleting first? I am doing this in a loop for a webcam program and when I delete the image, it shows a broken image if it is being veiwed right then. I wish I could allow it to overwrite when calling the rename. FYI, I have to upload a temp image first because if I upload the original, it will show as a broken image or partial at timed when being viewed.

Jun 8, 2011I am trying to pass some information from a VB form to my MySQL database. i have named all the textbox's the same as the field in the database and checked all my database fields and textbox names which are all correct. When i try to enter information into a form I sometimes get an error at the .executeNonQuery section of the code.
To test, I outputted the SQLStatement string to a textbox ( which pulled through all the fields from the textboxes correctly) then manually inputted the completed SQL query into the database and it worked. But when I try to do this in one go it seems to fail if there is too much text ( if i enter 'a' into each field it works). Are they limits to the size of the SQL query that can be passed from VB?? all the MySql database fields are set to text with no size limits.

Jul 23, 2010Is it possible to use ACCESS DB (MDB) on a SERVER. I would like to use the MDB file to hold my DATA. Has any1 used a multi user vb.net program with Access DB residing on a SERVER? I am just trying out something and do not want to use SQL SERVER for this project.
