Is it possible to use ACCESS DB (MDB) on a SERVER. I would like to use the MDB file to hold my DATA. Has any1 used a multi user vb.net program with Access DB residing on a SERVER? I am just trying out something and do not want to use SQL SERVER for this project.
View 10 Repliesconnect my vb.net application to a remote sql server database, so every one who installs the application would be able to connect to the same remote database. the application would obviously require the internet to run.i also want the option to add more databases in the future, preferably one for each business who would use my software.i am wondering the best way to set up this server that could hold multiple databases. i would think i have two options:
1) set up the server myself on a dedicated computer
2) pay for some type of service that host sql server dataases
so how would i go about executing these options? i dont know the first thing. which option is better?i do however know how to connect to a remote database so thats not what i am asking.
I have a program that simply checks if the account number and pass word match. And if not it allows you to create it. But i have no idea on how to create something that will hold the data and will allow the user to add and remove sets of data.
View 1 RepliesI have a bit of a problem. I am using an Access database to hold data for my VB app. In the VB app, I have a data source thats pulling data from the database.
I modified the database today, deleted some tables, added another one, but the data source in the project window does not show these updated changes. I had to reconfigure the datasource with the wizard to get the changes to update.
Is there a way that i can get the data source to update itself when the form loads?
I'm not sure if this is a simple problem or not but it's frustrating me to no end.

I want to store the contents of an XMl file into an array but struggling to work this out. I have managed to read the data in and store in labels as a test. I then created an array list and used a message box to display the data to see that it has been stored. It does but I am not sure how to group this data. There are 3 records in the file. the idea is to end up with the following:

The problem is, I've never created a class before, not in VB, Java, or anything. I know all the terms associated with classes, I understand at a high level how classes work no problem. But I suck at the actual details of making one.[code]...
As for the Getter and Setter, the reason I put the question marks in is because I want to return the whole array there. The class will eventually have other properties which are basically permutations of the same data, but this is the full set that I will use when I want to save it out or something. Now I want to return the whole Array, but typing "Return fullDataSet()" doesn't seem like a good idea. I mean, the name of the property is "fullDataSet()." It will just make some kind of loop. But there is no other data to return.

How do i make a variable that can hold more than 1 piece of data. I wan't a variable that can keep 4 number in it. When i count them in using a for loop the only thing i have after it is finished is the last number counted in by the for loop.

My understanding of OOP would lead me to believe that if I declare a System.Data.Linq.Table(Of ICRUDable) then I should be able to put ClientAddress's in there.

View 3 RepliesI have a vb.net project that has 2 exe's that get built as well as the installer. The two exe's share a bunch of common files. I do not want to have two copies of the common files or mess around with having build events that copy things around (if possible).
My method was to create two projects in the same folder and have them point to the files they needed. This appeared to work until I tried to compile both apps at which point I get an error in a file called Application. Designer.vb. It seems that project files create this file in their folder and when I have two solutions in the same folder they conflict. So my next effort was to create the second project in it's own folder and just add the items as needed. The problem here is that VS2010 doesn't hold a link to a file in a different folder it copies the file to the new project folder. What is the vs2010 way to get this done?
When a project has been published the file that is put in my start menu is an application reference. How do i get hold of the actual executable file so i can post a demo?

I am wanting to use the TableAdapers and/or DataAdapters that are stored in an XSD file ("A DataSet for using data in your application") to
1) delete data from SQL Server
2) insert data from a dataset to SQL Server.
the XSD is to be stored as a file outside of the application so that the same code (this code i am having difficulty with) can be used to upload data from different excel files.
I created the XSD file in VS 2005 and "Configured" each table adapter to generate: Select statement, Update statement, Delete statement, table mapping, Fill method, Get method, and update method.
I am searching for some generic code that will execute the update statement and populate the database with the data in the data set.
How do i retrieve the TableAdapter and DataAdapter information from dsXSD (or the file dsLoadData.xsd)?
And then use the data, especially if relationships exist between tables defining a specific order for the tables to be loaded...

A variety of files (pdf, images, etc.) are stored in a ntext field on a MS SQL Server. I am not sure what type is in this field, other than it shows question marks and undefined characters, I am assuming they are binary type.
The script is supposed to iterate through the rows and extract and save these files to a temp directory. "filename" and "contenttype" are given, and "data" is whatever is in the ntext field.
I have tried several solutions:
1) data.SaveToFile "/temp/"&filename, 2

I have no idea how to import this, or the Server for MapPath. (Cue: what a noob!)

I'm creating a reporting web page as part of a standard VB.NET web application. The page is data driven, with jquery making calls to a web service local to the application to get values of elements that are dynamically created in the DOM. Ultimately these dynamic elements and their values are all wrapped up in a JSON object, so that part of the client side is fine.
Right now, I can pass that JSON object to a method in the web service which creates an SQL Data adapter from the values and queries a database. My ultimate goal is to have this client JSON data be used to query the database and construct an excel file to send back to the user, or failing that a CSV file.
It's my understanding (from working with PDF file generation) that this type of function can only be done on the server side of the web application, not even from the web service (i.e. I can't have the web service return an array of bytes and have JavaScript/jQuery present that as a file).
So, how do I go about this? Now I have my JSON object on the client side, where should I be sending it, how, and how do I go about returning my file?
I've read about either storing the JSON in a hidden field and having the server take the elements value and go from there, or using AJAX to send the JSON to the server just before a postback is made to fire off the server-side function to run the query and return the data.
I just need a little guidance, and a little help understanding where to use the hidden field, or what I am actually doing with the pre-postback AJAX call.
