When a project is built in VB, the executable file is created in the \bin\Release folder. Apart from the executable there are other files that get created:
MyProject.application
MyProject.exe.manifest
MyProject.pdb
MyProject.xml
Are these files required to run the executable? Is having just the MyProject.exe file in the setup enough? And what are these files for?

I wrote this VB program to be able to throw a device we developed into programming mode where we use an ATMEL Flip installer to upload new firmware. I can program one device after another running the application off of Visual Studio Express 2010 or Visual Studio 2010, but when I go to publish this file and run it on another machine, it becomes unstable and crashes after each upload. On those same computers if I run the raw unpackaged program under Visual Studio Express, the system does not crash, and I can program devices repeatedly.

I have a windows form app. project and when I start the debugger my form with datagridviews works fine, but when I publish the application the exe file does not work. When I double click the exe file, I get two small empty windows and the second one has a ok button on it, when I click it both windows disappear. I work with vista 64 bit and I have made another small editform which works fine.

I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.
So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time. How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

i am trying to open an external executable file during runtime using a process component and the process.start() method. I've been testing out my code with various executable files on my C: drive....some work and some do not work. I've been able to successfully open Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, and Notepad; however, when I try opening various other executables the following exception gets thrown:
A first chance exception of type 'System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception' occurred in System.dll
I cannot figure out why some programs open just fine while others cause the above exception to be thrown.

What i need exactly is to make a program that have a button called "browse" , when the user clicks it , it prompts the explorer and let the user choose a .exe file, then theres another button called "merge", when the user clicks it, i want the file that was already selected to be merged with one that will be already on my project, and the result would be a single executable file, that will open the 2 .exe files when running it. Obviously i could do all the steps, but im stuck on the file merging part.

I'm sick of my EXE files only looking decent in one view in explorer (ie List or Tiles etc) because I can only figure out how to specify one icon file for my projects so it has to be a specific size and if its too big it looks rubbish at smaller sizes in explorer, and vice versa if its too small. So how can I embed more than one icon file and make it automatically select the correct one to display in explorer depending on the view? I believe you can store more than one icon in an ICO file, so do you have to just combine the various size icons into one ICO and then explorer will automatically select the correct sized on? Or is it something you have to do within the VB project?

I have an application that uses some external files. When a button is clicked, it opens 2 excel files and writes to one text file. When I publish this, it does not include those files. How can I make it include those files in the final solution. I have added them into my solution explorer under different folder names but they are not there.

I have written a fairly basic application. It reads txt files, loads a SQL, and outputs to text files. The application compiles and publishes without an error. The app works perfectly on my PC. I can not get it to work on any other PC. Application will install without an error but when I try to launch the app, nothing happens. Running out of ideas to try and hoping someone may have some tips or tricks to try and see what is going on that I have not tried.I am running Windows 7 Pro - 64 with Visual Studio 2008. The only references are for .net 2.0 and ADODB.DLL. I have setup the app to include all references as local copy to true.
I have tried installs on Windows 7 Pro, Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Pro, and Windows Vista. All install without error. Have tried installed as user with admin rights and the PC's primary admin account. When you launch the app, there are no messages in all OS except Windows 7. It will basically Flash a message about checking for compatability and run you through a wizard to see if running as XP or Vista works and it doesn't.

Application runs fine on the computer that I used to create it.The application has 3 functions:
Button1...locate and preview an image file.
Button2...creates an email with html link...creates an html page file...ftp's the image and html files to server...sends email.
Button3...ftps image file only.
Publish and install on another computer and I have problems.
Button 1...Will load and preview file correctly.
Button 3...ftp image file only.
Button 2...I get an error (my own 'failed' message)
I have the same net framework 3.5 sp1 on all computers. What am I missing?I am thinking now it is code, but why does it will work on one and not the other.Do I need to install VB 2008 express on every computer that will be running this app just to insure that the computers are the same?

I want to save an excel file with the following prefix: Order-Monday for Mondays, Order-Tuesday for Tuesdays etc and then this file will be overwritten the next week. For the following bit of vb
lstrDateStamp = Now().DayOfWeek
xlWorkSheet.SaveAs(gstrFilePathS14 & gstrFileNameS14 & "-" & lstrDateStamp & gstrFileTypeS14)
the Now().DayOfWeek returns '5' apart from doing a case expression to decipher 1-7 as days of the week is there any other way I can get lstrDateStamp = DAY (i.e. Friday)

When I publish my program I get no errors, and then when I install it on another machine it says it gives me the error that it can't read the txt file that it stores data in. If I hit continue it also fails to read the database. The database file is stored in the bin/debug folder and I told my program to include it when I first added the data connection. Anything I can do to have these included so my program can run on other machines?

I have an executable that I was able to get working on all XP machines by registering all the .dll's associated with it.On Vista, however, I go through the exact same registration process but right when I open the executable it goes to a "WindowsApplication1 has stopped working" dialog. I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

I am working on a file access monitor wrapped up in a VB .Net Class. The ileSystemWatcher is working and my log file shows files when they are accessed. However, I am having trouble returning who or what accessed the files. For example....system services and processes should return something like NT-ATHORITYSYSTEM while a network share being accessed by another computer should return DOMAINUSERNAME and finally a process running in the background via "Switch User" should be returned as DOMAINSOMEOTHERUSER ....anybody have any ideas? I have searched high and low and have found nothing but other people asking the same question and people saying how it is not possible. the Sysinternals Process Monitor is able to output the correct results and its documentation states it was created using NET API however I can not find any references to any such API calls or combination of such. Should I be using something else other than the FileSystemWatcher? My code is below

Whenever I publish my app, or when I run the exe from teh debug folder it takes a couple of seconds before the splash screen shows. However, when I run it from within VB (by pressing the "play" button) the splash screen shows immediately.
What could be the cause of this?

I have published application before and they all (3 setup files) work fine. The problem is I don't know anymore how I exactly did it. Now I am trying to publish another form which has a connection to my sql database. The publishing goes fine: publishing folder is: C:Movie-databaseApplication 4 and installation folder is the same, and I therefore leave it empty. Application is available only online. But when I execute the published setup.exe I get two windows with no info about the error: see attachment.

I'm attempting to download a file with a custom "message" i.e. with specific bytes sent to a server. I am using the lightweight utorrent setup file which could be easily downloaded with the statement in the first code tag or even using a WebRequest, WebResponse, StreamReader etc. But for some reasons I need to be able to code the "message". I would explain why but that would just be a diversion...Anyway the problem is that the packet gets saved in its native form but I need to be able to save the packet to the actual file without the header and etc. The sample code is in the second code tag.
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile()
Dim server As String = "download.utorrent.com"
Dim mySocket As Socket
[Code].....
