View 1 Repliesso I was originally having problems even saving the data, but I can now get it to stay in the dataset, and when I switch to another page it stays there when I go back to it. Although when I close the form and reopen it, the changed data has not saved. I know that it is because I have only updated the dataset and not the database, so was hoping someone could give me pointers of how to approach it.

I have recently wanted to start work on an application that uses an MS-ACCESS database. The problem is that no matter what I do, the actual database will not retain any records added. I have followed the Microsoft examples to the letter and it does not work. As long as I have my app running I can add, edit and delete the records. As soon as I close it and run it again, all the records are gone. The mdb is not read only, I've checked it. I also decided to try the my video collection example program that is included with VB 2005 and it will not retain any records either. Is there any code I need to add to get this to work or is my copy of VB 2005 broken? This is extremely frustration because I plunked down a lot of money for Visual Studio 2005 Professional. This is a key feature and it should work. Microsoft had me do a reinstall and apply a couple of patches and it still did the same thing. They told me either I am not coding it right or my system is flaking out. I did a fresh install of Windows (I even formatted the drive before installing), and reinstalled VS yet again and even with that being the only program on there, it still will not work. So I installed all my programs again, restored my backups and now a day and a half later I am writing this.
View 9 RepliesI have a small vb.net application that fires a crystal report through crystal viewer.
The report uses an ODBC connection provided by 32-bit software accounts package, which is installed in the ODBC 32-bit This all works fine on 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win7 with no problems, When run on a win7 64-bit machine the application launches ok, but when it comes to running the report, it prompts for a database logon box for the odbc connection.
When the report is run seperate on its own, on the exact same pc through crystal reports desginer it runs fine, Its almost like the application is not picking the 32-bit ODBC set up is it the case that the connection needs to be coded rather than using the report connection,
how to connect to database using ODBC, where in connection string i will provide only DSN name. User id and Password should be entered dynamically. Like if i want to connect to SQL Server, I will provide dsn name, User id and password shud be entered dynamically. Already there is a form in SQL Server for Logging in, want to connect to tat?
View 2 RepliesI want to create ODBC DSN for a database (which will be included in my application folder whenever a user setups the application). I want to know how to create ODBC with all the required parameters so that the first thing that is done when the setup is being run is connecting the database to the application. I have tried using default VB.NET setup wizard and Installshield.
View 1 RepliesHere is my sub for updating a Database using ODBC:
Public Sub UpdateDatabase(ByVal sql As String, ByVal parameters() As OdbcParameter)
Dim connectionString As String = "dsn=" & ODBC & ";uid=" & UID & ";pwd="
Try
[Code]....
But the following exception is shown:
NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
Which seems to be triggered by this:
adapter.InsertCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
with odbc connection in vb.net example i have add button on my database and i want that what ive added will be added on the database with odbc connection.i know how in oledb but im really confuse with odbc
View 2 RepliesI would like to generate an Excel file using a database query in VB.Net. How can I do it? To be more precise: I would like to "bind" a query (much like binding a query to a GridView) to an Excel file such that the rows in the table occupy corresponding cells in a new Excel file, and save the file to my computer. And then, mail that file to someone. While I can handle the mailing part, it's the creation of such a file that I need help with. Anyone know how to achieve what I want to achieve? PS: I need to do this in VB.Net and I'm using SQL Server 2008.
View 3 RepliesI am currently attempting to write a program that will take a SQL query saved as a .sql or .txt and execute it against a specified database, and output the results to file. I have seen some sample code of executing a SQL query line by line,
and writing individual results to file.
The query that needs to be run is only reading information from multiple tables, but is pretty lengthy to do line by line. Is it possible to execute or read the whole query from the .sql file, or a text file, and run it against a specified database, and
have the results of the query output to file in vb.net?
I want to save an excel file with the following prefix: Order-Monday for Mondays, Order-Tuesday for Tuesdays etc and then this file will be overwritten the next week. For the following bit of vb
lstrDateStamp = Now().DayOfWeek
xlWorkSheet.SaveAs(gstrFilePathS14 & gstrFileNameS14 & "-" & lstrDateStamp & gstrFileTypeS14)
the Now().DayOfWeek returns '5' apart from doing a case expression to decipher 1-7 as days of the week is there any other way I can get lstrDateStamp = DAY (i.e. Friday)
I am connecting to Citrix database using SQL-defined ODBC. Having a problem with it. I am updating an existing application that uses the ODBC in SQL, and it connects fine. However, that database connection is secured, only available on the production side. The test side has a remote connection. I am attempting to change the remote connection values to match the parameters of the SQL-based ODBC, but the labels are different, and it doesn't seem to match. Specifically, I don't think I'm getting the DataSource correct. Also, it can't find the username and password that I use to log into the remoter connection - I get an error message "Invalid authorization specification".

View 2 RepliesI am working on a file access monitor wrapped up in a VB .Net Class. The ileSystemWatcher is working and my log file shows files when they are accessed. However, I am having trouble returning who or what accessed the files. For example....system services and processes should return something like NT-ATHORITYSYSTEM while a network share being accessed by another computer should return DOMAINUSERNAME and finally a process running in the background via "Switch User" should be returned as DOMAINSOMEOTHERUSER ....anybody have any ideas? I have searched high and low and have found nothing but other people asking the same question and people saying how it is not possible. the Sysinternals Process Monitor is able to output the correct results and its documentation states it was created using NET API however I can not find any references to any such API calls or combination of such. Should I be using something else other than the FileSystemWatcher? My code is below
View 3 RepliesI'm attempting to download a file with a custom "message" i.e. with specific bytes sent to a server. I am using the lightweight utorrent setup file which could be easily downloaded with the statement in the first code tag or even using a WebRequest, WebResponse, StreamReader etc. But for some reasons I need to be able to code the "message". I would explain why but that would just be a diversion...Anyway the problem is that the packet gets saved in its native form but I need to be able to save the packet to the actual file without the header and etc. The sample code is in the second code tag.
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile()
Dim server As String = "download.utorrent.com"
Dim mySocket As Socket

I am connecting to an Access database and using a parameter query with the LIKE operator to return all rows that match query. The string to search for is taken from a Textbox
sql =
"Select * FROM Allview WHERE Info Like" &
"*" &
CStr(TextBox1.Text) &
"*"
The query does not return any data in vb, but when run from access with same string, there is data returned.The connection to the database is done correctly, as I am able to return data with various other queries.

How do I connect to Mas90's file using their ODBC that they setup
View 10 RepliesI'm having problems loading a csv file using dataadapter with ODBC command. Here's what I have:
Dim conn As OdbcConnection
Dim dt As New DataTable
Dim da As OdbcDataAdapter
Dim connectionString As String
Dim iFileRecords As Int32
[Code] .....
I get the following error:
"ERROR [42000] [Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'CAST([Preferred Phone Number] AS varchar(30))'."
The reason I was trying the CAST([Preferred Phone Number] AS varchar(30)) AS PNo was:
If all of the Phone Numbers are added with spaces e.g. 086 1234567, it works using SELECT [First Name], Surname, [Preferred Phone Number] AS PNo FROM [" & Me.ImpFileName & "]"
but if they are without i.e. 0861234567, it doesn't work hence trying to use CAST.
My guesses are to either force the import process to treat the [Preferred Phone Number] as text or get the CAST expresion to work but I've failed on both counts! I've tried the command in SQL database (albeit using SQL rather than ODBC connection) selecting from a table using CAST and it works fine.

I was able to write files to the database and this works fine. retrieving them manually works fine and the files look OK and are not corupted. However when retreiving them using VB.NET, and if the file size is approx > 5MB, I get the following "uncatchable" error (yes thats right, I cant "Try Catch End Try", it just crashes):

I'm using ODBC to export tables from a dataset to an Excel file without auto-formatting Excel or even needing to have Excel installed on the users PC. This works great but I just had a request to autosize the columns and make the header line bold. The only way I know of doing this is to fully automate Excel to control the row/column/cell formatting. Does anyone know a way of doing this without auto-formatting Excel?
