View 1 RepliesI added a new database using SQL Server Management studio express 2008. I can connect to that database using Web Developer and Visual Studio just fine. But when I try to connect from VB Express 2008 I get an error message "file in use by another program". VB only prompts me for the name of the database, but Web Developer and Visual Studio prompts me for both server instance and database name. I'm sure this is just something simple I'm missing.

I'm trying to connect from VB 2008 Express Edition to a database in an instance of SQL Server 2008. Both, VB and SQL Server are running on the same machine. From a VB project, when I try to define a new Data Connection I find just three Data sources available: [Code] I selected the last one but when I browse for the mdf file I cannot select it because it tells me that the file is in USE. I have stopped all the services but still I'm not able to link the database file.
Two questions: 1. Is there a way to connect to the SQL Server Instance and from there to select the desired database? 2. How to connect using the Database file.

Left join etc Where ... etc. The issue I have is the connection takes about 20 to 25 seconds to complete. I'd like to create some status message so the user knows the system is not actually hung. We have windows xp with sp3. The MDAC version on my machine is 2.81.1132.0. We notice that with this version of MDAC we are not able to connect to Microsoft ODBC driver for oracle. For MS ODBC to work we should have xp with sp2 or MDAC version 2.82.3959.0.
Is there any way to connect to MS ODBC using sp2 or version 2.81.1132.0 in XP?

If I change the code to use a datareader it I can loop through the data but a data reader is not recommended to pass through the layers and so I'm wanting to create a dataset/data table process. Anyone have any ideas why the dataset/dataTable code is not working properly?

When I attempt to use the Data Sources wizard to establish the connection, it does not provide an ODBC data source. I'm using Add New Data Source/Database/DataSet/New Connection which shows the Add Connection dialog. The only options it gives me for data sources are Access & SQL Server and the OLEDB data provider. It does not appear to give me the option of adding a new data source provider. Attached is an image of my current Change Data Source dialog. Where do I get the ODBC data source provider and how do I install it into Visual Studio?
View 3 RepliesI am using VB 2008 express and SQL Server 2008 express on a test basis and I used to connect VB express to a SQL database (created in SQL Server 2008 Express management studio) file and it work perfectly until my hard drive packed up and I had to get a new one, so I had to reinstall both of these again and copied my old databases from a backup I had. Now when I try to connect to the database file it cannot connect. Network related error or the instance name is incorrect. When I look at the advanced options in the connect dialog it shows my instance as .SQLExpress and my correct instance name is .SQL2008Express. I clicked OK on the connect dialog and manually changed my connection string to the correct instance and that worked but whenever I run the application in debug mode it give me the same error as above.

I'm going to convert the Access database to a SQL Server Server Express data base so I downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Express onto my pc with Windows 7. The installation went fine and I actually converted my Access database to SQL server. The report uses an ODBC connection provided by 32-bit software accounts package, which is installed in the ODBC 32-bit This all works fine on 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win7 with no problems, When run on a win7 64-bit machine the application launches ok, but when it comes to running the report, it prompts for a database logon box for the odbc connection.
When the report is run seperate on its own, on the exact same pc through crystal reports desginer it runs fine, Its almost like the application is not picking the 32-bit ODBC set up is it the case that the connection needs to be coded rather than using the report connection,
