Unable To Connect To A Database From VB Express 2008
Feb 14, 2010I added a new database using SQL Server Management studio express 2008. I can connect to that database using Web Developer and Visual Studio just fine. But when I try to connect from VB Express 2008 I get an error message "file in use by another program". VB only prompts me for the name of the database, but Web Developer and Visual Studio prompts me for both server instance and database name. I'm sure this is just something simple I'm missing.

Feb 9, 2010I have been learning about working with databases and VB. I have coded the connection string for a MS Access database to my VB project but i cannot establish a connection with my sql mdf database.
The code i used to connect to MS Access is:

What is the connection code in order to manipulate data from the mdf file. Is it similar to the above code.
VB 2008 Express - Connect To SQL Server Instance And Select The Database
Sep 5, 2009I'm trying to connect from VB 2008 Express Edition to a database in an instance of SQL Server 2008. Both, VB and SQL Server are running on the same machine. From a VB project, when I try to define a new Data Connection I find just three Data sources available: [Code] I selected the last one but when I browse for the mdf file I cannot select it because it tells me that the file is in USE. I have stopped all the services but still I'm not able to link the database file.
Two questions: 1. Is there a way to connect to the SQL Server Instance and from there to select the desired database? 2. How to connect using the Database file.

Jan 12, 2012I am using VB 2008 express and SQL Server 2008 express on a test basis and I used to connect VB express to a SQL database (created in SQL Server 2008 Express management studio) file and it work perfectly until my hard drive packed up and I had to get a new one, so I had to reinstall both of these again and copied my old databases from a backup I had. Now when I try to connect to the database file it cannot connect. Network related error or the instance name is incorrect. When I look at the advanced options in the connect dialog it shows my instance as .SQLExpress and my correct instance name is .SQL2008Express. I clicked OK on the connect dialog and manually changed my connection string to the correct instance and that worked but whenever I run the application in debug mode it give me the same error as above.

Dec 31, 2007In the beta version of Beta2 of Visual Studio Professional, when I choose add new connections, I can select a I can select a " SQL Server (SQL Client)" datasource, which works great with my SQL Server Express DB running on the local machine.
In VB2008 Express, though, I can't select a "SQL Server" in the datasource dropdown. I can only try to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server Database File.
When I actually try to connect using the .mdf file that is being managed by my local SQL Server, I get an connection error -- can't make connection to the server (and the usual message about enabling remote connections".

I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

My friend made a program that links to a database that opens in MS Access and when you open the database the inputted data are organized to their respective columns and rows. Jan 11, 2011i have a form with a bunch of textbox's that are connected to a ms access data source, so i can update, edit and delete records.I also have 4 radio buttons.What i'm trying to acheive is that when a row is selected in the datagridview, the textboxes show the values in them (id, name, number, etc.),which works perfectly, and the radio buttons should show the value of the "grade" column of the cell that is selected.
So basicaly when you click a record, if the grade is 5 i want the radiobutton5 to be selected. And if i click radiobutton6 it should update the field to 6.

Nov 20, 2009I am developing an applikation that uses an access database for storing records. The form app is for the users to add and change data in the database and so on.
but then I should have a service to cycle thru the database to check some criterias and so on to trigger events etc. No problem with the service part, found this articel [URL]... With the form application i have no problem to connect to a database and manupulate the records etc..In the service app i have to manualy code the connection to the database. Does someone have a tutorial or could help me with some examples code for manualy connect and move in a table?
Forms :: Updateable DataGridView Bound To Database-Drive Business Object
Oct 13, 2011I'd like to have an updateable DataGridView that's bound to a database-driven business object. It needs to handle all aspects of CRUD and be sortable and filterable as well.
Most of them simply bind to an object (non-database, manually filled) and do not allow you to Add, Delete, and Edit records. Furthermore, they basically never show how you would perform sorting and filtering.
I think the biggest things I'm not understanding are:
1) How do you make the DataGridView perform additions, deletions, and edits on an object.
2) How do you program your object to handle additions, deletions, and edits. Do you just need methods that use ADO.Net, NHibernate, or Linq to SQL (or any other CRUD handling mechanism)?
3) How to make this filterable and sortable.
Is this overly difficult to do or why am I have so much trouble finding examples for this?
