Unable To Connect To A Database From VB Express 2008
Feb 14, 2010
I added a new database using SQL Server Management studio express 2008. I can connect to that database using Web Developer and Visual Studio just fine. But when I try to connect from VB Express 2008 I get an error message "file in use by another program". VB only prompts me for the name of the database, but Web Developer and Visual Studio prompts me for both server instance and database name. I'm sure this is just something simple I'm missing.

I have been learning about working with databases and VB. I have coded the connection string for a MS Access database to my VB project but i cannot establish a connection with my sql mdf database.
The code i used to connect to MS Access is:
<Dim dt As New DataTable()/>
<Dim match As String = ""/>
< Dim connStr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
[Code]....
What is the connection code in order to manipulate data from the mdf file. Is it similar to the above code.

I'm trying to connect from VB 2008 Express Edition to a database in an instance of SQL Server 2008. Both, VB and SQL Server are running on the same machine. From a VB project, when I try to define a new Data Connection I find just three Data sources available: [Code] I selected the last one but when I browse for the mdf file I cannot select it because it tells me that the file is in USE. I have stopped all the services but still I'm not able to link the database file.
Two questions: 1. Is there a way to connect to the SQL Server Instance and from there to select the desired database? 2. How to connect using the Database file.

I am using VB 2008 express and SQL Server 2008 express on a test basis and I used to connect VB express to a SQL database (created in SQL Server 2008 Express management studio) file and it work perfectly until my hard drive packed up and I had to get a new one, so I had to reinstall both of these again and copied my old databases from a backup I had. Now when I try to connect to the database file it cannot connect. Network related error or the instance name is incorrect. When I look at the advanced options in the connect dialog it shows my instance as .SQLExpress and my correct instance name is .SQL2008Express. I clicked OK on the connect dialog and manually changed my connection string to the correct instance and that worked but whenever I run the application in debug mode it give me the same error as above.

I have written a new app in VB.net as a front end to a mySQL database held on a PC on the LAN running Windows XP. This worked fine for a while. The PC running the mySQL server started locking up (XP errors, not mySQL errors according to the event logs), so I decided to have a go installing Ubuntu to run the mySQL server to see if that was more stable.Ubuntu 11.10 is now installed, and mysql server is also running. I have imported the old sql database files and the mySQL workbench shows all tables are imported successfully.
HOWEVER, I cannot get my VB application to connect to the database now it resides on Ubuntu - just returns "Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts" when i try to open a connection. I am fairly new to Ubuntu and MySQL, and don't know if the fault lies with the O/S (a firewall config problem perhaps?) or if I need to do something different with mySQL.I can ping the Ubuntu pc from the client pc and vice versa.I have used ufw to open port 3306 on the server The ufw logs do not show any errors when I try to connect from the client pc, so I don't think it's a firewall problem (but could be wrong). I thought it may be something to do with the usernames I use in the connection string, but when I change these (deliberately use the wrong password for example) I get the same message, rather than a username/password error Is anyone else using a client PC running Windows (W7 or XP) to connect to a mySQL database running on a Ubuntu server?

In the beta version of Beta2 of Visual Studio Professional, when I choose add new connections, I can select a I can select a " SQL Server (SQL Client)" datasource, which works great with my SQL Server Express DB running on the local machine.
In VB2008 Express, though, I can't select a "SQL Server" in the datasource dropdown. I can only try to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server Database File.
When I actually try to connect using the .mdf file that is being managed by my local SQL Server, I get an connection error -- can't make connection to the server (and the usual message about enabling remote connections".

Running off my laptop: Visual Basic 2010 Express & SQL Server 2008 . I've successfully been able to use the connection wizard to connect to my database in vb.net and read/write data using datasets/tableadapters/binding_source etc.
Now I am trying to create an SQL connection via code to connect to my database to do some more complicated queries. I was successful in being able to connect to my database with SQL, but by doing so it produces an error when it tries to run any .Fill() methods from my TableAdapters below. The error produced is the following: "SqlException was unhandled. Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'Chris-PCChris'".
If I remove my SQL connection code, the TableAdapter.Fill() methods will work fine.

why do the following code does work in VB2008 while it works very well in VB6 or am i missing something...?
Private Sub TextBox1_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles TextBox1.KeyPress
if KeyAscii = 13 then
lblTot.text=val(txtQty1.text) * val(lblRate)
txt.Qty2.SetFocus
End Sub
When running it shows KeyAscii not declared but the same works well in VB6 (the following code)
Private Sub Text1_KeyPress( KeyASCII As Integer)
if KeyAscii = 13 then
blTot.text=val(txtQty1.text) * val(lblRate)
xt.Qty2.SetFocus

Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

I can successfully add a data source and preview the data within the IDE so assume that the connection is ok regarding Connection strings and remote access.
However, when I attempt to access the data using any run time control I get the following error when the table is loaded using the .fill method.
MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlException was unhandled

I would like to know how could i connect my Visual Basic program to a database that can be opened to MS Access. My friend made a program that links to a database that opens in MS Access and when you open the database the inputted data are organized to their respective columns and rows. However he used VB6 in making the program and he wont let me see the syntax. And another thing, the program that he made updates the database everytime a new set of data is inputted.
