Connecting To An ODBC Data Source In VB 2010 Express?
Jun 20, 2010
I need to connect to an MySQL database in my VB.NET application (VB 2010 Express). When I attempt to use the Data Sources wizard to establish the connection, it does not provide an ODBC data source. I'm using Add New Data Source/Database/DataSet/New Connection which shows the Add Connection dialog. The only options it gives me for data sources are Access & SQL Server and the OLEDB data provider. It does not appear to give me the option of adding a new data source provider. Attached is an image of my current Change Data Source dialog. Where do I get the ODBC data source provider and how do I install it into Visual Studio?

I'm using Visual Basic/Studio 2010 Express to run my VB program using MS Access database. I'm going to convert the Access database to a SQL Server Server Express data base so I downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Express onto my pc with Windows 7. The installation went fine and I actually converted my Access database to SQL server. I did not change anything in my VB program.My problem: When I run my normal program with the Access database (no changes), I now get an error when it executes the following code:
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader.
I get the error System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException was unhandled;
ErrorCode=-2147467259; Message=ODBC--connection to 'SQL ServerBilotta-pcsqlexpress' failed.
[code]....
It appears the ODBC is looking for the SQL server eventhough the program is pointing to the MS Access db. How do I get it to NOT look for the SQL db? Is there a default setting for the

I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

I have an old VB6 program which copies data from a legacy system (Btrieve 6) into our SQL Server so it can be served up on the web and used to feed some of our other needs. The legacy system outputs a file and a feed program posts it into the legacy ODBC database. The program isn't anywhere near realtime and I am now finding the delay between data going into the legacy database and then into the SQL database is becoming unacceptable so I thought I'd look at VB.NET and see if I could find a better way of doing it using FileSystemWatcher so that when the legacy output file is renamed I can then start a copy of the record affected from the legacy to the new database.

I used the ODBC Data Sources admin panel to create a "data source" for an ".mdb" file. This was very easy. I can access the mdb (database) file via an ODBC driver, locally. However I need to access this data source over the network. Can anyone please help me learn how to make this same database available on the host's network interface? Perhaps there is a tutorial, video, or some other documentation that explains how to modify a data source to make it available on the network. I am using Windows XP. I hope this does not require a special Windows server distribution.

Which technology should I use for data access layer?What's the best way of connecting to a dynamic data source and binding the result to a grid?I'm writing a little web app that user can define connection string and table name (MS Sql Server) and the program will display values in that table inside a grid.We must use datasets (because of dynamic data source) and generate the query as a text command ("Select * From " + TableName).We don't have a model (data source is defined by user at run time) so we can not use EF.

I am a brand new user of MS Visual Basic 2005 Express and MS SQL Server 2005 Express. I have familiarized myself with both programs but have one extremely frustrating problem. Once I open SQL Server, I can not establish a database connection from Visual Basic using the Visual Basic Data Source Configuration Wizard (even if I close SQL Server). If I reboot and open Visual Basic first, I can then connect using the Visual Basic Data Source Configuration Wizard. But then I can not switch to SQL Server and open the database (even if I close Visual Basic). Again, I must reboot to open the database in SQL Server.I suspect there is a setting somewhere that needs to be changed, but I can not find it?

I am connecting to Citrix database using SQL-defined ODBC. Having a problem with it. I am updating an existing application that uses the ODBC in SQL, and it connects fine. However, that database connection is secured, only available on the production side. The test side has a remote connection. I am attempting to change the remote connection values to match the parameters of the SQL-based ODBC, but the labels are different, and it doesn't seem to match. Specifically, I don't think I'm getting the DataSource correct. Also, it can't find the username and password that I use to log into the remoter connection - I get an error message "Invalid authorization specification".

how to use the VS 2010 IDE tools in a way the Microsofties didn't specifically intend. But since this is something I immediately tried without success.
I have defined a .NET 4.0 WPF Application project with a simple class that looks like this:
Public Class Class1
Public Property One As String = "OneString"
Public Property Two As String = "TwoString"
[Code]....
The expected result was that "OneString" would appear next to "One" and "TwoString" next to "Two" in the running window.
The question is: Why didn't this work? What will work instead? If I put bindings in a DataTemplate, it works. Blend, with its sample data stuff, implied that this should work, but it doesn't.

I'm developing an application that detects Source-based games running on the LAN. Following up on the specifications provided by Valve, I have it narrowed down to exactly what I want: making a UDP connection on port 27015, sending an A2S_INFO query (0xFFFFFFFF followed by "TSource Engine Query") and parsing the binary reply.
This is the code I'm working with:
Dim sIP As String = "192.168.0.154"
Dim nPort As Integer = 27015
Dim connectionMessage As String = "ÿÿÿÿTSource Engine Query" & Chr(0)

I have a function that works perfectly when I am connecting to a SQL Server on another machine as shown below:
vb.net
Public Function OpenDatabaseConnection(ByVal DB As String, ByVal Server As String, ByVal UID As String, ByVal Password As String) As Boolean
OpenDatabaseConnection = False[code].....
This works every time without an issue. But now I am trying to do some testing on a local version of SQLExpress 2005 on my machine and this fails with the following error:[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I have tried server names of local, (local), localhost, (localhost), the ip address of my machine. I am using my own user name which has complete rights to the process, so is someone out there able to help me out as to why I would be getting this error? Is something different?

Most of the VB.net windows application I have created so far have been working off a local server. To add a data source I click Add New Data Source and then database and then connect to the database by linking through an ODBC driver. This works neatly and places data sets that I can then pull onto forms in various formats, DGV's textbox, Combobox etc.
The application I am trying to build now links to a hosted server on the internet. For security reasons I cannot create an ODBC that connects to the database. I can use a ADO connection string and this is fine for various tasks and I know I can populate a DGV using this connection. However, it is much quicker once I have dataset that I can repeatley call on.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced any issues with adding a data source to a VB.NET 2010 solution using the 'Add New Data Source' wizard. I am getting a very odd behavior when i add the data source, I see a .xsd file is added in my solution explorer but I do not get a data source listed in the data source view. In short, it will add a dataset to the project but will not add an entry in the project data sources. I realize I can code to get the same results but purely out of convenience I would much prefer to just use the wizard and the corresponding table adapters it generates as I always did.
By the way, a google search shows that many people had similar issues in the 2005 version but their issues involved trying to use special characters in the project path (i.e. 'C:My ProjectsR & DMy Tool. I do not use any special characters in my project paths and yet am still experiencing this issue.
