Published Program Doesn't Include Text File And Database It Needs To Run
May 11, 2009
When I publish my program I get no errors, and then when I install it on another machine it says it gives me the error that it can't read the txt file that it stores data in. If I hit continue it also fails to read the database. The database file is stored in the bin/debug folder and I told my program to include it when I first added the data connection. Anything I can do to have these included so my program can run on other machines?

I have an application that uses some external files. When a button is clicked, it opens 2 excel files and writes to one text file. When I publish this, it does not include those files. How can I make it include those files in the final solution. I have added them into my solution explorer under different folder names but they are not there.

G'day all, I need to read a text string from a file, then convert it to an enumeration, based on a list of enumerations that is contained in a .h file located elsewhere. The .h file consists of about 300 lines that look like: [Code] This results in 2 problems, can I include the .h file in my VB program, and if so, how? And then, once I read in the string, how to make the program convert it to the corresponding enumeration for output?

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

In my code I reference certain excel files by listing the paths and names within my code. I've herd that if I put my excel files in bin/debug/ then I no longer need the path and can simply refer to them by name. This has not worked out well for me. how I can add a file to my project reference it by name in the code and have it compiled with my program so that other's (without that paticular path) can use my program. I have also added them as an "Item" and have their properties referenced as an "Embedded Resource", but still no luck. Maybe i'm just calling them wrong? Below is my code....
Dim file1 As String = "C:
etworkpathmyfile.xlsx"
Dim hdrftr As Object

My program needs to read data from a few Excel files that my company has made, basically a database I guess. Is there a way I can put the actual Excel files into my program so that the user doesn't have to supply them? Or perhaps there's an easy way to turn the Excel file into a database?

Ive added the .sdf when i package my solution but its still an issue. How do I change my connection string to connect to the .sdf file that I included in the package? this is my current connection string which looks at the sql server: connectionString = " Data Source=CHRIS-PCSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=ce_db;Integrated Security=True"

I'm trying to include a few text files in my project. These files are read and used to make decisions in the program. Ordinarily, I would just set the file path and open the file via StreamReader, no problem. However, this application now needs to work on other computers and I want to include the text files in the application directory. I've researched two ways to do this:
1) Include the files as resources and reference them via my.resources.
I've gotten this to work ok, except the files are opened as strings upon starting the application. They are fairly large files, which I imagine is taking a lot of unnecessary memory. Also, StreamReader wont work with these files as resources,
or at least I can't figure out how to. My application is already based around using StreamReader so I don't really want to change this.
2) Include the files as additional items. I know how to do this too, but I can't reference the files programmatically.
Can I use a resource text file via StreamReader or how would I reference the files if they're included in my project directory?

I wrote this VB program to be able to throw a device we developed into programming mode where we use an ATMEL Flip installer to upload new firmware. I can program one device after another running the application off of Visual Studio Express 2010 or Visual Studio 2010, but when I go to publish this file and run it on another machine, it becomes unstable and crashes after each upload. On those same computers if I run the raw unpackaged program under Visual Studio Express, the system does not crash, and I can program devices repeatedly.

I'm using IO.File.ReadAllLines(FileName) to read all lines from text file to array of strings at once. Problem is, text lines include ANSI characters above ASCII value 127 (Scandinavian letters e.g. "Ä" (Ascii 196), "ö" (Ascii 246) and "é" (Ascii 233). Array is build up nicely, but all chars above ascii value 127 are not shown right. How can I use ANSI character set with .ReadAllLines to correct this problem? In VB6 with "Open Filename For Input As #1 / Line Input #1, txtLine" there wasn't any problem.

I'm doing an error log in my code and I'm trying to output the errors to a text file with a specific date/time in the title so they can differentiate. I've tried things like
logname = "C:Documents and SettingsSeDingDesktopErrorserrorsLog " & DateTime.Now.ToString() & ".log"
But I get this msg "The given path's format is not supported." all the time.

If you have
[Code]...
The question is when I do task.Wait(4000, cancel.Token) this should ultimately fail as the ContinueWith task won't complete within the timeout. It seems the Wait only applies to the Task and doesn't take the chain into account, how can I have it wait until the "chain" is complete?

I'm using a dll in my program, it works fine. But when I publish and try to run on another machine, it says the dll is missing.Am I right in saying that I need to add it to my references, with the Add button on the references page? When I do that, it says it's not a valid assembly or com component.
How do I fix this? My level of knowledge is very low, especially with dll's.

I am having a problem with my program that is desinged to read a 3rd party text file database. I posted previosuly about a problem inserting an item in a new row and the column was expectig a different data type. It appears that sometimes the column is being determined to be of decimal value, I dont understand why. the fields contain information such as
Col1
F123456
CLW-12321 etc....
So my column fills with
123456
12321 the letters just get chopped off
So I added MaxScanRows = 0 to my schema file and that took care of the problem
Except now several of my columns that contain Date Values are coming back
9/24/2010 00:00:00
without the setting MaxScanRows = 0
The date returned 9/24/2010
Here is the code for my schema ini file I am creating:
HTML
Dim fs As New FileStream("Schema.ini", FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write)
Dim writer As New StreamWriter(fs)
[CODE]............
I have been trying different settings hence the dimmed out lines
Here is the code to fill the datatable:
HTML
[CODE].............
I am thinking that without the MaxScanRows = 0 setting the datatype for Col1 is being incorrectly determined
I am not sure what is happening with other columns that contain date values. Apparently If i use MaxScan Rows=0 all columns are being pulled over as string value which creates numerous problems. If I dont use maxscanrows then all columns appear to be correct except Col21 MLSNUM which is being pulled in as a decimal. Can I change that in the schema file?

I edited the development copy of a cherished program beyond restore by CTRL+Z, the original version which I want to recover is already published and it is in the c:/deploy folder but I dont know how to open such files for editing. How can I open this deployed program to edit and add some methods. I was cautious enough to save the program before editing but I was suprised that the original was over written by the edited copy.

My program should be capable of bulk, multiple data transfer and usage at same time. The real problem is their main program is created 10 years ago in foxpro and they update it every month.!!the reason for they still using that old one, just because of it is highly flexible ! They really looking for a flexible program that can be changed settings instantly.

I have written a very simple program to simulate the operation of some electrical relays which respond to buttons pressed on a form. The important thing in the program is the pick and drop times of the relays so I use about 40 timers to simulate the operation
of the relays each stimulated either by another timer or the operation of a mousedown operation over an area of the window which has a GIF background.
The program works great when simulated within VB2010 Xpress but when I publish and install on either of my 2 laptops it freezes and does not respond to the mousedown procedures. It seems slightly better if I don't enable XP visual syles but still does not respond enough to be used. I am running 12 procs each time a continous timer runs out but altering the value of the timer does not make any difference. I've also noticed if I minimise the window and reopen the window it does move on slightly but still never responds to the mouse.
Also the timers in the program for the relay times seem to work at strange values and not those set sometimes? It seems to work OK on my main PC if I install it

In the past I have written VB6 and VB NET 2005 programs that are installed and on the user's computer. This had to be done because the salesmen in our company have has a set of local data on their laptops so that they could do work and not be connected to our network. I would then sync the files when they connected to the network. (This same program is used by the rest of the company as well, but everyone else uses network data.)We are now at the point where we are not using any local data. Our salesmen access our network data using an iPad, VPN, and a Citrix server, which works fine

I have a vb.net application that will not connect to an oracle database on the PC that I publish the app too. It works fine under my pc both in design and when I publish it to myself. But it will not connect under the pc I publish it too. I do have oracle installed on the pc and have the connection setup exactly as I have on my own pc. I am sure it is a file path issue, or at least I believe it to be that.

I have the same problem as in this thread [URL].
I am connecting to a SQL database on a hosted server and everything is ok but if I publish the application then it fails to connect which is a bummer because then I can't debug it!
I have tried turning off windows firewall and that doesn't make any difference.
