.net - Task.Wait() Doesn't Include Any Chained (ContinueWith) Tasks
Nov 29, 2011
If you have
[Code]...
The question is when I do task.Wait(4000, cancel.Token) this should ultimately fail as the ContinueWith task won't complete within the timeout. It seems the Wait only applies to the Task and doesn't take the chain into account, how can I have it wait until the "chain" is complete?

I have a lengthy XML file that I want to search based on text that a user types in. Because it's lengthy, I want to wait for the user to stop typing for 250ms or so before I actually start searching in the background. I tried to kick off my Task, having it sleep for 250ms, then check if my CancelTokenSource had canceled because another character was typed. I'm not seeing a cancellation, though, so I end up seeing my results flash several times as the queued up search tasks complete, one after the other, after I finish typing.

I'm trying to wait for a Task result in .NET 4, much like you can by using the await keyword in .NET 4.5. I just can't figure out how to do it though...My code (to prove that I'm atleast trying):
Private Function GetXDocumentFromWebLocationAsync(ByVal request As WebRequest) As XDocument
Dim queryTask As Task(Of WebResponse)
queryTask = task(Of WebResponse).Factory.FromAsync(AddressOf request.BeginGetResponse, AddressOf request.EndGetResponse, Nothing, Nothing)
[code]....
As you would expect, the GetResponse calls are executed on a different thread, but the function has to wait for the result before it can return. Unfortunately this blocks my main thread until the task has completed and I don't have the slightest clue on how to make it wait without blocking. I don't want to use the Async CTP either because that's just running away from the problem.

I want to be able to enter (type in) data into a combobox as well as picking from the list. In earlier VB there was AfterUpdate event so that I could enter in the data I wanted. Now I have tried Keypress, Enter, and others and they all want just one character or number. If I try to enter a two-digit number it doesn't wait.

When I publish my program I get no errors, and then when I install it on another machine it says it gives me the error that it can't read the txt file that it stores data in. If I hit continue it also fails to read the database. The database file is stored in the bin/debug folder and I told my program to include it when I first added the data connection. Anything I can do to have these included so my program can run on other machines?

I'm working on something whereby I write and read alot of data to disk directly as bytes. But I can't figure out a foolproof way of delineating data structures chained in a single file. A null byte obviously wouldn't cut it, because that could occur within the data structures themselves. Theoretically, any pattern of bytes can potentially occur within a data structure. Does anyone have any ideas for a byte pattern that I could use as a flag for my streamreader? Anything reasonably short, since it's going to be pretty complex, streaming through each file twice, once byte by byte to find the flags and again to split the stream.

Ive got an app that holds a list of site we have, At each site there are a few devices. The idea is when they click on a site all the details for the site are loaded and then a second thread sits and pings each device to see if its live. Im trying to do this in a seperate thread so if they click another site while its still pinging them it doesn't wait before it switches site. This all seems to be workling fine except if you click through the sites quickly, when you do that it will eventually come up with
Quote:
{"Collection was modified; enumeration operation might not execute."}
The error flags up on the "Next" line in "ThreadedPing"
Thread stuff
Public Sub ThreadedPing(ByVal dt As DataTable)
Try
Dim dr As DataRow

While navigating to a series of sites at one site the WebBrowser control's DocumentCompleted EVENT is tripped and no other recorded Browser events occur after that. When this happens the hour glass cursor indicates the browser is waiting. From this point it take 120 to 250 seconds of wall clock time before the browser resumes. I am looking for a way to force an abnormal termination without destroying the control. I have tried "Stop", "nav to about:blank" repeatedly without success. How can I force an abnormal termination when the Cntrl is in a wait state?
Consider the following: The last known Browser event to be tripped is a Document Complete event; nothing else occurs after this. When this transpires the Cntrl is waiting.
1:50:657: ============================= ENTER WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted EVENT ========================================
31:50:657: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^THE NEW WEBBROWSER STATEMENT

My program performs a bunch of task in a loop. After each task completed it saves log/status of task in a text file. The program runs fast but if there is more than 10,000 tasks it becomes slower and it takes a lot of CPU because of frequent I/O operation.
Is there a better way to save the log/status of task without making the program slower? At first i used a textbox control to store the log but the problem is textbox control can not hold a lot of text.

how the threading within vb actually works. am i of the understanding that every time you create an event, through a button control for instance, that this infact creates a seperate process which will run independantly to another. say for instance you had two buttons on a form and each contained code which took 5 seconds to execute. if i were to click one button into action and then the other with a second, would the two processes run alongside one another or would i have to wait for the first code to execute before the second button could be executed?

I am trying to create a vb application that will create sscheduled tasks .Created a windows service and set it to start manually for now.Just as a test, when the timer expires I have set it to start 'Notepad' as a process which I can see listed under processes in the Task Manager, but cannot see it as a scheduled task.What I am unsure whether this is the right way to create a scheduled task and if it why can't I see Notepad in scheduled tasks.

I have the code below:
Dim i As Integer
Dim objExcel As New Excel.Application
Dim objWorkbook As Excel.Workbook
objExcel.Workbooks.Add()
[code]....
At the end of this routine, eventhough the data was correctly saved to my Data.xlsx file, this routine also opened 15 EXCEL.EXE tasks in task manager.I thought that I had cleaned up before quitting. By the way, whether I write to 1 or 5 or 10 cells in Data.xlsx, 15 EXCEL.EXE tasks would be opened regardless.Is there a way to (easily and) completely close all EXCEL.EXE in task manager before leaving my application?

I use Visual Studio 2003, VB.net, NetFramework 1.4 and Windows XP I have been using the following Code Snippet for a number of years in both Web Services and Windows Applications. However suddenly around the 29th September 2010 it has stopped sending E-Mails from both Web Services and Windows Applications. The same problem has happened not only to my own Network but on two other Networks, one using XP as its Server and the other using Server 2003. All 3 of these are using different ISPs.

I am writing a VB.NET application that creates a new task item for another user. Is there a way of having this task go straight to their task list without having to open the acceptance email ? ( Would help if such an email is not sent in the first place to avoid cluttering)I found a similar post on experts-exchange forum, though no one was able to answer that till date.I assume that can be achieved using shared Task folder but could not get good examples on msdn to work with.

I am building an application that will run through various tasks like database backup, zipping some other files and so on.I have the progress bar figured out for each individual task and I have all my tasks working.I am trying to build an interface to display to the user to show them the progress of the entire run.I was thinking like a list box or other object where I could put a green checkbox image or red x image as each tasks runs and is a success or failure.

trying to automate some manual tasks. The task to access a web page (asp) login and then get some details from the site. The challenge is that the home page after login is build of 3 frames. when i see the page view source from the edit menu all i see are frame names. Once i right click on each frame and view source i am able to see the complete source - variables javascript function etc. The following code helps me to navigate :
vb.net
Set ie = CreateObject("internetexplorer.Application")
Dim s As String[code]....
After this the page has been logged in. Now to proceed further i have to click a "image" object.
1) I tried qualifying the image like ie.Document..........item("img1").click this doesn't work
2) I tried calling the javascript function directly
ie.Document.all.Item("frame1").Document.parentwindow.execScript "JS_WGorUsers (funcname)", "javascript"
The 1st option gives a run time error and 2nd option says access denied. (if i login manually i am able to click the image.

I have a main(frmmenu.vb) form which is the mdi parent of other two forms (namely frmcandidatelist.vb and frmviewcandidate.vb)...........Two forms are displayed simultaneously on frmmenu each separated by split-container(frm-candidate-list.vb on left side and frm-view-candidate.vb on right side)
Frm-candidate-list.vb shows name-list of customers on a datagridview. While i click on a item from that list, details of the respective customers(like name,id,photo,address,etc) is displayed on the right side form(frm-view-candidate.vb).....
But there is a problem. Loading details of a customer takes time(since i have to connect from remote database)... So the whole program becomes hanged(like) till details are loaded.....
