im an amateur programmer making a program for somebody else. i need to get it to run out of the box no problems and i need to find a way to automatically find the desktop for xp but it would be nice if the same code worked on vista/7 to but thats only if its convenient.

If that folder doesn't exist, it sets it to the desktop. This works fine for everyone but one user who is getting the following error: Could not find special directory 'Desktop' How is that even possible?

View 7 RepliesI have made updates to my programs, including a large update with the fonts on my forms. The only problem is this font is not found on vista or Windows XP and must be downloaded. The program is completely ruined with its looks without it. Is their a way so that both Windows XP and Vista could download these fonts, On startup of the first form, Form Load maybe? Even if the user says that he or she would like to see the program with the fonts? I just don't want to take the many hours i wasted resizing with the new fonts, ect. If it would be easier I could ask the user if they are using Windows XP, Or Vista?

How can I let VB automatically detect it and return the directory path to me?

how you can choose the directory to install your program to because when I publish the program it installs only to the directory it was published to! would I need another program to move the files to the directory I want?also im using .mdb files in the program and I want these files to be installed to the same directory but the files arent even in the Application files folder when it is created so when I run the program I get an error telling me the program cant find the .mdb files at the location specified in the code

I'm making a setup project for my application. I have a file, dbconnection.xml, that I want to be installed to C:Program filesmyAppdbconnection.xml regardless of where the user chooses to install the application. I've added the program files 'special folder' and have a subfolder, myApp, under that where I place this xml file.
For whatever reason, no matter where the user installs the application to, the XML file is placed in the install directory, not in c:program filesmyApp.

The key value deletes on the uninstalled - which is what i want it to do. However, it always creates the key value when installed. i don't want it to do this. It should only create the key value in the code.Can any tell me, when setting up the registry in the setup project, is there a way to stop it from creating the key value when the program is installed.

For restores, the installation path to the SQL Server named instance was easily found by looking up the instance name in the registry using

They have recently upgraded to Windows 7, and locked down the registry so that users can not read values from it. Is there a way (via code) to find the path to a named instance of SQL Server, so that the app can automatically place the database files (mdb & ldb) in the correct folder?
I've built a couple of Apps successfully, but having published them to a Network Folder, Non-Admin Users can't install them themselves because the Install attempts to create an Entry in the Start Menu. There may be other Security issues (I need 4 of the permissions included if I publish it as a Partial Trust Applications, which I think affect this) after this point that I'm not aware of, but yeah, it fails when trying to create a Start Menu item -

I think excluding the right is just part of the SOE, but is there some way I can create this and have it NOT create a Start Menu item, haven't been able to find any?

Is there a way to have your program automatically create a proxy for a specific browser, like IE, when your app is running? I was thinking that maybe you could create a VLAN proxy or something and a button on the app to toggle it on and off. But I'm not sure how or if one can do it.
