Making A Setup Project - Install Directory, Not In C:program FilesmyApp?
Jul 8, 2009
I'm making a setup project for my application. I have a file, dbconnection.xml, that I want to be installed to C:Program filesmyAppdbconnection.xml regardless of where the user chooses to install the application. I've added the program files 'special folder' and have a subfolder, myApp, under that where I place this xml file.
For whatever reason, no matter where the user installs the application to, the XML file is placed in the install directory, not in c:program filesmyApp.

I built a Windows application and I created the setup file and it installs and runs like I want it to. I would like the application to install in a certain directory on the computer it is installing on. That means the setup has to create the directory and install the application in it.I also have folders with pictures and a sound file I would like it to install in a separate directory under the directory previously created.

I've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)

I need to install a windows service via an .msi for many tablets which is nooooo problem. The problem is, the tablets currently have the service running which was installed by installutil. So when my installer runs, regardless of Remove Previous Version is true, it stops stating the service already exists and to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. So I wrote a console app which preceeds the primary output as follows:
Sub Main()
Try
Dim filename As String = "C:Program FilesRSCProjectServiceSetupRSCProjectService.exe"
'Dim filename As String = "C:RSCProjectServiceRSCProjectServiceinDebugRSCProjectService.exe"
If System.IO.File.Exists(filename) Then
[code]....

I need to create a setup project, the main project can't be installed without a program called infragistic.
How can I do ask for infragistic program before to install the main project? If infragistic is not installed, the setup project must install it, I mean execute the infragistic installer before the main installer.

I have created an MSI. Before I install it, I look at "C:Program FilesMyApp" and it does not exist. I execute the MSI and look at "C:Program FilesMyAppData Base" and it contains my database with no data in it. I have checked it everyway possible. I open the app and stop it before the Fill dataset and check the connection string, it points to "C:Program FilesMyAppDataBase". I fill the dataset and it contains data from my previous install of the app. The database at "C:Program FilesMyAppDataBase" is empty. I use Windows explorer and check the database it is empty. I check the adapter and the connection string is "C:Program FilesMyAppDataBase". This is an Access database 2007 and the app is VS2008 in VB. It looks as though the installer is setting up a parallel environment somewhere.

I'm a huge music person (got my own lil record thing going) but I'm wanting to design a program that would make music in my way. I have a decent amount of background knowlege of Visual Basic and Java I'm just wondering how could I execute this whole project. The Project is making a MPC Sampler. MPC is a drum machine; a machine with buttons that once you press it that it will play a sound from a drum (ex: snare, kick, tom, ect.) . So I would want to make some pads on my program that each have their own sound. Total of 16 pads. Which the design wouldn't be hard to make nor would the functionality of it having the play back sound (in my opinoin it wouldn't be hard atleast). But the thing is I wanna map out these pads to number keys on the number pad or keyboard. I'm not so sure how to do that. But that's all the easy stuff...
Also finding information is making a sound directory. What I mean by this is that I want to make a User Interface that will open up a file directory of sounds and the user can select what "kick" or "snare" sound he may want for the kick or snare pad. I don't know how to do that or even know what to search; neverless I don't know if this whole project idea is a good idea for Visual Basic or another programing language.
Also LATER ON I am wanting to add a record and export function that alows users to..well...record and export their beat or instrumental ha. That doesn't seem too too complex (mainly due to the fact that all it needs to do is record the users key strokes and then show them and play the sounds, but obviously it would get more complex than that.)
Here is an image of one of many MPCs but one with a directory - [URL]

I've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files. This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors. Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders.
2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA.
3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup.
4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry.
5. I need it to default to program filesprojectname (it does by default)

I new to this Forum and relatively new to VB programming. I have read some really good posts here and thought I would ask about a perplexing problem I'm having. I createdindows Form application, built it and deployed it with no problems. However, when I added a small block of code, re-built the app and went to add the app to the Project Output Group in the file system editor the project was not in the Project drop down list. I closed the Setup project and deleted it from the project folder and checked my code and re-built the app and tried the Set Up project again with the same result
