I have a VB.NET 3.5 Win Form app that I want to put on a CD and distribute. I don't want the application to install since it is only going to be run a few times ever by a user. So is there a way to just run the application from a CD?

I would like the application to install in a certain directory on the computer it is installing on. That means the setup has to create the directory and install the application in it.I also have folders with pictures and a sound file I would like it to install in a separate directory under the directory previously created.

View 1 RepliesI've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)
[Code] I have used flash .swf file there in my program(It shows animation there in form1).If I dont have flash player here in my pc & if I install & run my program then it shows error message that "Windows Application1 got a problem needs to close". If I have visual studio then it works when I install flash player. I have a file, dbconnection.xml, that I want to be installed to C:Program filesmyAppdbconnection.xml regardless of where the user chooses to install the application. I've added the program files 'special folder' and have a subfolder, myApp, under that where I place this xml file.
For whatever reason, no matter where the user installs the application to, the XML file is placed in the install directory, not in c:program filesmyApp.
I am trying add the prerequisites with my setup i have set the prerequisites download location to the same whwere my application is and now i am getting this type of several errors.
Error 1 The install location for prerequisites has not been set to 'component vendor's web site' and the file 'DotNetFX35SP1dotNetFX20aspnet.msp' in item '.NET Framework 3.5 SP1' can not be located on disk. I need to install a windows service via an .msi for many tablets which is nooooo problem. The problem is, the tablets currently have the service running which was installed by installutil. So when my installer runs, regardless of Remove Previous Version is true, it stops stating the service already exists and to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.So I wrote a console app which preceeds the primary output as follows:

I am using VS 2008 VB and setup my application software in Win XP without any issue. But after installed in Win 7, it doesn't work well (it show one file not found, but I saw the file in the right folder). Could it be the incompatibility of VS 2008 and Win 7? If I upgrade to VS 2010, will the issue be fixed?
View 10 RepliesI'm a Visual Basic beginner. There are many things that I didn't know about Windows software development as I've been a Mac user for 20 years and just started developing Windows programs several days ago.
Anyway, using Visual Studio Installer (File > Add > New Project > Visual Studio Installer), I have two files inside the Release folder - setup.exe and Setup.msi. I've got some information about these files. So when you publish your software, what do you do with these two files? According to one web site, you can put them together into one with IExpress, which produces a file with an extension of CAB. Another web site suggests SFX Compiler. In the meantime, I downloaded a dozen applications at Download.com earlier. If I click on the download button, the final delivery extension is .exe on most of them. I know that you won't go anywhere by double-clicking on setup.exe from the Release folder without Setup.msi. Meanwhile, Setup.msi is a tand-alone application. But nobody uses this file alone to distribute their product.
I have designed and published my small created app with WINDOWS FORMS using VB 2010 EXP on Windows 7. I can only install the app on the machine that I used to develop the app.I want to install the app on another computer but I cannot. I usually have error reports.

The SQL server is 2005.I do not have any warnings or errors, and the project compiles without error. When I run the install package on another computer, everything appears to install correctly, and the shortcut is placed on the desktop. However, when opened, the cursor goes into wait mode for a few seconds then returns to normal and the form does not open.I am using windows authentication for the SQL server, and the user of the other computer is the owner of the database I am developing for, so that person has access. A folder titled 'Application Files' A file which is after application named followed by the extension of 'application'A file titled setup.exe
I expected that I would only have setup.exe. Or is this how things go with Visual Studio 2010? Anyway, if I take this package to another computer and double-click on setup.exe, the application will be installed at the following path:

View 24 RepliesI have made a rendering application and it NEEDS dx9c to run... so i want to add dx9c install into my setup project, so when the application installs after the setup has installed the main application it will then install dx9c, I have a folder in my data folder called dx9c with full runtimes inside and the dxsetup.exe, I have tried making a custom action and pointed the action at the dx9c/dxsetup.exe from the data folder into commit folder but this errors on when launching the dxsetup.exe "invalid command line" and uninstalls the whole application.
