View 6 RepliesI built a Windows application and I created the setup file and it installs and runs like I want it to. I would like the application to install in a certain directory on the computer it is installing on. That means the setup has to create the directory and install the application in it.I also have folders with pictures and a sound file I would like it to install in a separate directory under the directory previously created.

View 2 RepliesThe following code for installing log messages has worked on Windows 7 and XP, until I came across an XP machine where someone had deleted the Temp file under Documents and Settings/ComputerName/. Is there a safer location to install a log file?Path.GetTempPath doesn't seem to be the best idea.
Public Sub appendLog(ByVal message As [String])
Dim format As String = "MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss.fff"
System.IO.File.AppendAllText(System.IO.Path. Combine(System.IO.Path.GetTempPath
, "Log.txt"), vbLf + " " + DateTime.Now.ToString(format, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) + " " + message)
End Sub
how you can choose the directory to install your program to because when I publish the program it installs only to the directory it was published to! would I need another program to move the files to the directory I want?also im using .mdb files in the program and I want these files to be installed to the same directory but the files arent even in the Application files folder when it is created so when I run the program I get an error telling me the program cant find the .mdb files at the location specified in the code
ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:UsersdazzaDesktopUserid.accdb
that is my connection string, obviously when I install the program it isnt going to be correct so how do I change it oce the program has been built#
im an amateur programmer making a program for somebody else. i need to get it to run out of the box no problems and i need to find a way to automatically find the desktop for xp but it would be nice if the same code worked on vista/7 to but thats only if its convenient.
View 4 RepliesI'm making a setup project for my application. I have a file, dbconnection.xml, that I want to be installed to C:Program filesmyAppdbconnection.xml regardless of where the user chooses to install the application. I've added the program files 'special folder' and have a subfolder, myApp, under that where I place this xml file.
For whatever reason, no matter where the user installs the application to, the XML file is placed in the install directory, not in c:program filesmyApp.
Is it possible to create a setup installer that will auto install fonts when user install the applications?

View 8 Repliesmy vb experience is fairly limited - I've only used it when supporting legacy applications or for small tasks so apologies if what I'm asking seems simple. I wrote a small vb install script which creates a new folder on a users desktop, copies over relevant files from the install folder to the users new folder and creates a shortcut on the users desktop.
This works great for giving stuff to QA to test. However, there's one dll included in the install folder which is also in the users GAC. The code looks in the GAC first for this dll and only looks in the install folder if none exists in the GAC.
What I want to do is include a line in my install script to copy this dll to the users GAC as well as copying it to the installation folder. Is there anyway to do this in VB? I did find the following on one of the MS sites for installing into the GAC gacutil /i a.dll
Is it possible to run this through VB or is there a cleaner way of doing this?
I'm creating a simple .NET console application where I want to save a file in a folder that's part of the root project, like so: SolutionName.ProjectNameTestData. I want to put test.xml into the TestData folder. However, when I go to save my XDocument, it saves it to SolutionName.ProjectNameinx86Debug Console est.xml.

I'll tell you what I'd like to do which is to create a directory listing of every file inside a specified directory and then use a loop to upload each file in this directory to a remote folder via FTP.

View 3 RepliesIs it possible (I'm sure it is) to validate a user's credentials against Active Directory without using Directory Services?I'm building a Browser-Based WPF application which requires users to login to and get validated via Active Directory. Since .Net 4.0 (or maybe 3.5) accessing Directory Services from an Application requires the application to be fully trusted. Since IE won't provide full trust to an application if it doesn't have the signing certificate in it's cert store, the application is refused startup permission.
If I don't use Directory Services, then I can leave the application as Partial Trust and validate my user's credentials without having to install a certificate on each user's machine.

View 1 RepliesI have a straight-forward task I'm attempting to accomplish. I have the mechanics down, and need to hammer out the details but I'm stumbling across one small point. :)
This script is supposed to take the files in the local C:Temp directory, and copy them to a selected user's shared directory on the file server.
Protected Sub btnCopy_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnCopy.Click
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyDirectory("C:Temp", "\MAVERICKVOL1Users" & ddlName.SelectedValue & "DESKTOPRECORDINGS", True)
End Sub
This script does indeed work (and I'm aware I need to create exception handling) but it only copies what contents are on the server's directory of C:Temp rather than the local source directory.
I'm using VB.NET/ASP.NET to achieve this.
How am I able to direct my function to use the local user's directory rather than the remote server?
I am attempting to compare two directory trees. I have the program map the network drive and copy a directory. I need it to verify that the files copied successfully by comparing the source to the destination. If comparison returns equal then perform action1, if comparison returns unequal then perform action2.

View 1 RepliesI am going to need to create a windows form for work that we can connect to a database table, select a directory and move files from the directory that are in the table and move to another folder. The directory will have sub directories that I need to search for the file name and move. I would like to have the table hold the file name (or path) and move all files that are in the database. There might be 20 files or 1000. Depends on the client we are processing for.

I'm using a dialog box to select multiple files and move them to the directory "C:/Playlist". I guess you can say I'm having trouble with 2 things.
1. The Loop
2. Use of the dialogs FileNames function

First off a short background of the project I am working on- I am developing a program that will be run off removable media (i.e. USB Flash drive). This will be a virtual desktop which you will be able to take with you and have the same desktop on any system. As we know drive letters can change with each host system the drive is plugged into, I need to be able to determine the path for the flash drive and access a specific folder ( i.e. My Documents)
I have an picture box(representing the icon) placed on my form (form1) and when I click the icon I want to be able to open and view the a specific folder from the portable drive. I need a click event that will determine a dynamic drive letter for a directory on the removable drive and then open that directory in an explorer window.
