What is the easiest way to automatically fill a datetime column in an SQL data table with the date the row was created? Using SQL Server 2005 if that matters.
EDIT: I've tried using GETDATE() for default and that works for an INSERT Query but not when the TableAdapter adds the row.
Would it be possible to search a table, confining to a specific date range based on a date-time column, and get a count of the 10 most used words in a particular var-char column excluding a list of words?All in SQL?Currently I am pulling out the records that match and sorting through the contents outside of SQL, I would think where I can do it directly on the server it would be more efficient.(SQL 2008)

be able to check if an application i am writing has been run on a week by week basis. i have created a button that when pressed creates a text file with nothing in it, i can read back the date it was created which also gives me the time which i dont need, i then need to compare the date the file was created to see if it is older than 6 days if so delete the file. how can i check to see if a creation date is older than six days???

I've been trying to use FileSystemInfo for this, but it doesn't seem to work to get the creation date of MULTIPLE files because it doesn't allow me to use wildcard characters to read all (not even sure if that's what I'll need to do).

These files come from a vba macro in outlook that will automatically save the attachments of the mails in the this folder. This will update the modified date/time, or at least it seems to.

Everytime I check to the code, the fidate and fidate1 variables are indeed the correct dates/times of the file it's currently checking. It almost never gets inside the elseif block at runtime though.
I am importing Tables from a Oracle DataBase, using a VB.NET dataAdapter. I use the "fill" comand to add the imported data to a DataSet. How is it possible to define a specific column of a DataTable as PrimaryKey, after the DataTable is already filled with data?
View 2 RepliesI've written a loading program that writes text files to our database. The text files are dumped by another system every 2 hours onto on a shared network drive at my work. Here's the problem though - the files don't have a date/time stamp within them. I've been getting the date for each file from the creation date. That works okay, but when I've written loading programs in the past, I like to move the loaded files into a folder called "Loaded Files". That way, I can quickly see visually how many files I've loaded vs how many have not be loaded.
The problem this time, is that if I were to move the file into another folder, the creation date changes...a lesson I learned when I copied all of the files into a directory on my C: for testing. They all had the same date/time stamp!My question is, what's the best way to handle this? I don't want to move the files after loading them if it alters their creation date. I mean, what if I have to go back and load one for some reason, the date will be lost forever. I also don't want to write something into the software that has to check a file each time before loading it to the database.

Will explain soon.There is a directory with jpg files in it and the number of jpg files increased yesterday by 67, today by 37. Because the picture files come with any filename I have created a Windows app that renames the new files taking the ending point of yesterdays number as the starting point for today..So, each row holds 3 jpg files therefore 67 jpg / 3 = rows (yesterday). First number today is 68. I type 68 into the app I created, enumberating & moving (renaming) the jpg ('hduyhdgu.jpg becomes 68.jpg, suhdos.jpg becomes 69.jpg and so on for each of the new jpgs in that directory. That is done by the simple FileInfo/DirectoryInfo classes. Whilst renaming the photos in numerical sequence it has to write the html in the following form: [code] My Questions are:
1) How to sort out the row numbers so they flow in groups of 3 correctly and not 70, 71, 72, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75..?
2) How to create the table in code that dynamically draws itself with 3 columns (200px each done by CSS) wide and enough rown to hold every jpg in that directory? So, if I moved 5000 jpgs in that directory tomorrow the code will loop through and create the html.
3) If creating the table dynamically as in Q2 above how would I fix the place to draw it? Placeholder? A div is easy (<div 'id="MyTable" runat="server"></div>. In code behind: MyTable.InnerText=.../MyTable.InnerHtml=...) but is it the best idea? [code]

I am making a booking app in vb.net and I am using sql server as my database. I am confused about table creation. I have increment of 1 in customerid which is primary key in customer table. Suppose if a customer books a room and according to the increment id"1" is assign to the 1st customer. Now after some days same customer again comes to the hotel and books for a room. Now this time a different id would be assign to the customer according the the increment may be id"125".
What to do if I want to search the customer for how many booking has he done so far. Because there would be different id's assigned to the same customer as every time he walks in to book a room different id would be assign to him. And suppose if I make surname as my primary key than may be other people will have the same surname. How to solve this search problem for a specific customer for all bookings he has done so far. And if i give a unique id to customer my self suppose "cust1" than every time customer walks in he has to remember his id.
I need some help in the creation of a program to generate a security code based on the current date. I need to create something that first multiplies the MMDDYY (ie X=MM * DD * YY) then also adds the MMDDYY then finds the remainder and then multiplies but a specified number. I would like to create a small program that sits in the system tray with this code displayed. The code will always need to be 6 characters, so I might need to pad it with zeros. It has been years since I took basic VB, and I am really rusty.

I can do this on the SQL side or the code side. I have Linq at my disposal if I need it. The table doesn't need to be compiled by SQL. This will happen dynamically on a website and should be as efficient as possible.I don't want to have to iterate through each and look for breaks in contiguous days if I don't have to.
I have found many pages referring to having the date be part of a txt file being created, but not like the way I need. Having said that, this is what I've got.. [code] I read a page on working with txt files and learned what I could from it. It said to use the method in the beginning of my code for creating the file. It works great, but I would like to have a new file name everday, hence the date being integrated. So even if program was running, when midnight hits, a new txt file is created and new entries are written to that file. But I can't even get the date to be put in there. Everytime I try to make this work by using methods I read about in other pages, I get a syntax error, or a warning saying an end of statement is expected. [Code] my issue is that now i need two cases, first i need a query that will return the date created and modified of the table and i also need to know if its possible to query a list of table names in the database ordered by date created but that have a certain thing in their names. for example the database contains the following tables: [Code] and what i need the query to return is the tables that contain "Data", settings and employees are for the other functions of the program. so the query should return the 4 data tables in order of date created. but i have no idea how to go about doing that in the query, does anyone know how this is done?

The form does not like a blank MaskedTextBox; therefore, when filled - no problem. When left empty, it has a problem. So I wrote this code to populate the column regardless, and will filter out the 2001-01-01 entries in associated reports using Report Viewer. This is less than ideal, so I would like to know if there is a way to make the column as NULL instead of "dummy date" of 2001-01-01?
