Custom Dialog With MessageBoxOptions.ServiceNotification?
Sep 24, 2006
I'm trying to show my own dialog (windows form) from a windows service, unfortunatly this is not possible unless I can somehow make it work like a MessageBox and pass it the MessageBoxOptions.ServiceNotification.
Using the standard MessageBox won't work as I actually don't expect it to be seen by users most of the times and therefore was wanting to use my own form that has a countdown timer to close itself if no user interaction occurs within a given timeframe.The Form.Show doesn't take the MessageBoxOptions, but is there a way to make it accept these?

I'm creating an stock management application. At times I want to be able to search for a customer, location, or institution. I know how to do all of this, but what I really nee dot figure out is:How do I create/design a function that calls a form and has the user query information and then return that query's data, preferable datatable.Now, I've created the form that does all this and I have the dataTable but now I want to have a function that can call this "query form" and return that data.I was thinking I have to do something with multi-threading but maybe I'm just looking over something obvious. The best analogy of what I want to do is to create a custom dialog box, but obviously instead of returning a simple integer I'd be returning a dataTable.

I am writing a program and I need a way for the user to input information into a pop up screen, i.e. may be up to 10 settings for the program. I have looked at using a parent and child form but it seems somewhat difficult to pass data between forms. I have also looked at custom dialog boxes but it seems like there would be an easier way? Is there a way that a form or similar box could pop up when a button on form1 was pressed and then the user could make the needed selections and then click ok on form 2. This would then save the selections to some global variable that could be accessed by form1 after form 2 has been closed?

I'm trying to create a installation setup for my VB.net application. I need to insert a custom action while setup is running. So I add a Checkbox Dialog box to my setup. And I add a dll to the setup installation to capture Before Install and After Install events. Those are works fine. But I cannot access my check box value in those events. [code]

I'm having a bit of trouble with my project here... and Google isn't helping very much. To put it briefly, I'm currently making a sticky note program (one fairly similar to Sticky Notes, for those of you familiar with Windows Vista or 7). It's relatively simple, as the "note" itself is basically a glorified Rich Text Box.
My problem is this: I obviously want to allow some for some customization with the font, however I don't want to use a standard full-on Dialog Box. So I designed a small form with 2 Combo Boxes--one for font and the other for size--and 2 buttons, "OK" and "Cancel". What I'm attempting to do is program this form (named dlgFont) to more or less be recognized as a Font Dialog Box. I've got some of it figured out I think, but I can't seem to put the pieces together in a way that actually works.In the code for my main form, I have this within the Class... stuff:
Friend WithEvents dlgFont As System.Windows.Forms.FontDialog
As for the Command Button that pulls up the dialog box itself, well, it's actually a Context Menu Strip Item... I'm not really sure what to put. So far I've only tried this:
dlgFont.ShowDialog
And for the Apply event, I've got the generic stuff:
Private Sub dlgFont_Apply(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles dlgFont.Apply
If dlgFont.ShowDialog = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
Me.Font = dlgFont.Font
End If
End Sub
That's all I have for the main form. This is what dlgFont looks like: 'A limited-ability font dialog box.
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Friend Class dlgFont
[code]....

Lets say i'm making a new dialog. I don't want to expose the properties of the form to code elsewhere, only specific ones I define. I tried making the form Protected (including the Designer generated code) and putting it in another class, but then I can't figure out how to access the form from my code. Am I going about this completely the wrong way, or what?

How do I get at and invoke the properties dialog supplied by the manufactured? I have search this many times and found that most of the posts contain solutions that the original poster claims don't work The standard PrintProperties class does not handle a lot of printers who have specifictsks, eg a printer designed to pint on the face odf CD/DVD. I have found examples of how do this in VB6, but every examply I find for the versions of VB Basic after thet have comments that the solution provided did not persist the user chnges. Bow, come on, there has to be a way of displaying and persisting the user choises the dialog bog provided by the printer manufacturer!Terry

It's been a while since I last posted something, but this attracted my attention. Since many of my programs share the same type of code, I decided to dump it all in a class library for other programs to use.
Now I have a problem, Windows Forms in a class library can't be displayed. There is no "Show(Dialog)" command, only some for event handling. All properties are gone as well. The only way I managed to display a form is by making it as a new variable: 'Dim f as windows.forms.form
But this won't work because of the enormous amount of handlers added to the original.
How can I show my (TextureBrowse in my case) Dialog so other programs can use it?

I have a simple desktop application that uses a .NET setup project (.msi file) to perform the installation. On the first installation, everything proceeds in a timely fashion with good feedback for the user.The problem occurs when the user is installing the latest version of the application over an old version on their machine.There is an unacceptably long delay of about 60 to 180 seconds from the time the installer's 'Welcome' dialog [It's not the Welcome dialog, I've removed that from the Start section of the setup project and replaced it with a CheckBox dialog to ask if the user wants a shortcut on the desktop] disappears until the 'Progress' dialog appears. The user sees minute(s) of blank screen and thinks the install has stopped or failed.
In the setup project properties, I've got the 'DetectNewerInstalledVersion' and 'RemovePreviousVersions' properties set to true. So, I believe that while nothing appears to be happening, the installer is actually removing the old version. The 'Progress' dialog does not appear until the new version begins installation.I've been trying to either:
a) Get the 'Progress' dialog to display immediately after the 'Install Icon' dialog disappears
b) Show another dialog while the Uninstall is running to let the user know that the setup is still running and everything is OK.
I have been unsuccessful with both methods. I'm using VS 2008 SP1?

I often use the process of displaying a dialog from a form, with the dialog user input then used to update the main form without any problem. In a new scenerio I launch the main application screen, I then show a login dialog ontop of the main app screen and can launch another dialog from the login if a new user is required. The plan is to update the login dialog (updating a combobox to reflect the addition of a new user) from the new user dialog.
See code below :-
'Update login forms user list as new user added successfully
frmRoomBookingLogin.cboLogin.DataSource = Nothing
frmRoomBookingLogin.txtPassword.Text = "Updating password from dialog"
MessageBox.Show("The password text is " & frmRoomBookingLogin.txtPassword.Text)
[code]....
The messagebox implies the dialog has been updated yet the text does not change. Is it possible to update the dialog when using a setup such as Form -> dialog -> dialog? I'm intrigued as why the dialog does not reflect changes. I have never refreshed/repainted the dialog as never required to in my other examples when updating a form from a dialog and never encountered a problem when using a two tier form setup.

I have an assignment due this week in which I have to make a app that has 5 buttons and a picture box. When each button is clicked it has to show the corresponding picture in the picture box, the fifth button closes the app.
I have the whole form set up the way it should be, but I have no idea how to write the code to make the buttons display the images and close the app.I have the images in a folder within the project folders.
I have yet to be able to find one, the one I found should how to do it using a file opener dialog and a folder browser dialog but that is not what I think my prof wants us to do, as that is more for a picture viewer app that lets the user choose the file of the image they want ot view.
All i want is for the buttons to be linked to specific photos that are part of the application itself and have them open.

I have a Dialog that is basically a confirmation dialog on some SQL statements. After the dialog I have an if statement: If frmRelease.ShowDialog() <> Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Cancel then.My buttons are set as DialogResult = OK and DialogResult = Cancel respectively on the dialog form.
For some reason, sometimes my button set to DialogResult = OK is returning me a DialogResult.Cancel, and causing me to skip a block of cleanup code.

I came across this great article on creating a custom datagridview column which creates a graph-like effect in the cells of a custom datagridview column:[URL]..Does anyone know how you would edit this to format the number in the cell as a percentage? And does anyone know how you would set this up to take 0 values which do not create any graph effects at all.I have been trying to do this but keep getting errors.

I was trying to block the closing of a custom combo box popup window in my custom DataGrid. The popup window comes by pressing F4 or ALT+DOWN keys in my datagrid which is getting closed if I press the down arrow for the first time, after showing the first value in the combo box as selected. Next time onwards, if I press the F4 key and down arrow, I can move to any item in the popup window and select the item using keyboard and in that case, the popup window is not getting closed till I press the ENTER key or selection using the Mouse. Is there any specific reason for this behaviour or something is missing in my code part? [code]...

I'm using custom serialization and when the xml is generated it's putting the class name as the root element
Example:
<MyClassName>
<MyIntendedRootNode>
<ObjectType>
[code]....
I'm invoking the serialization by calling xmlserializer.Serialize(writer,Me) so I'm sure that has something to do with it.I've tried putting XMLRoot onto the class, but I think as vb is compiling this partial class with its aspx page, it's either overwriting this property or ignoring it entirely.I'd like to just tell it to either throw away everything it has and use a different root element.

I have a custom SiteMapProvider (populated from database) and a custom AuthorizeAttribute (validates current users roles + requested page against Role_Page database) for controller classes.I have to implement the function SiteMapProvider.IsAccessibleToUser(context, node). I also have to implement AuthorizeAttribute.AuthorizeCore(context).How are these two functions related? Isn't there some way to 'attribute' the SiteMapProvider?
Some code:
edit: Might this be a solution (inside AuthorizeCore())? context however is HttpContextBase, and IsAccessibleToUser() only takes HttpContext as parameter.If Not SiteMap.Provider.IsAccessibleToUser(context, SiteMap.CurrentNode) Then
current code:
Public Class CustomValidateAuthorization : Inherits AuthorizeAttribute
Public Sub New()
End Sub
