I need to create an application that allows staff members to login and see different things.I need to be able to have different user levels for this so that certain staff can see some things and other staff can't.I would like the login system powered by the MS SQL Database that the rest of the programs data is stored in.

It will have a main user ( Administrator ) and that user can create another users to access the app. The app will work locally and I would like to know a method to save that information @ localhost without being acessible to edit or view by other users.
Im thinking in a Access DB with all info and then make all information needed. But how to secure it without anyone else could access it or modify id? An encryption method would be the best way?

there are two entries in the database. the first username and password are bagstoper and 1a2b3c4 the second is bagstoper2 and 1a2b3c4d. when i test it with the first username and password it works but when i try the second it doesnt work.
I need to convert a large VB6 app to vb.net which does a lot of database work and produces a Crystal Report. The initial form is simple a login form which validates the user. I am trying to use a datareader to retrieve the user's login info but it won't compile on the statement where I'm trying to get the Connection String from the app.config file. It complains that the ConfigurationManager is not declared on the dim statement. Where and how do I declare the ConfigurationManager? The login form works to authentificate user, and my application starts. My app has 5 buttons and i want them to be restricted by user type
If admin - full acces
if Operator - 1 button(that leads to a form with 4 textboxes that edit a row from a database)
if guest - 1 button that leads to a form with a datagrid
So, if a guest user clicked a resticted button a msgbox appears.

I need some trick to make some good and safe "Login" to application system with username and password.
i have a login form and it has 3 user levels - admin, manager & accountant - which have limited privileges using the system. For ex., if admin logged in, this user can access the whole system; if manager logged in, this user can only access the employee records; & accountant user can only access the payroll.
i actually have the idea but because i lack knowledge about vb.net, i don't know how to code it.

At first I couldn't add a datasource (the .mdf file for the database) because of a "Operating system error 32" which I seemed to have resolved by giving myself full permissions for .mdf file (by right clicking on the file and going into properties and then Security) and restarting the SQL SERVER (SQLEXPRESS) service. The dataset for the database is in my solution explorer but when I right click on a table adapter to add a query and attempt to open up the query builder, I get the error in the title above.

View 1 RepliesI wrote the code below which calculates the length of a line on the form and save record. An error occurs when the programme tries to save the record. It gives me "Cannot perform '=' operation on System.Int32 and System.String" error. I checked the data type of "ID"(int), "Microscope"(Varchar), "Magnification"(int) and "Calibration"(Decimal), and they are fine so far as I know.

I created a SQL DB named MainDB.mdf and a small VB 2010 application with some forms and datasets.Everything was working OK until i got a new computer and re-installed Visual Studio 2010 and SQL server 2010 on it. I copied my DB from the old to the new computer and also copied by VB 2010 project to it. I used Windows Authentication to connect to the DB in the old computer and also in the new one, i am using different Windows user account names though.
I was able to connect to the DB in the new computer in the Server Explorer section, i created a new connection string to the DB and i can seed there is data in the tables. When i run my VB 2010 application created in the old computer get error:
"Cannot open database "MainDB" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'D630Admin'."
I need to get rid of that error and be able to add/mod/del data from my DB using my VB application as i used to.

this code is used for login by querying into the database....the logic is like this..it query accoding to the username text box and pass word text box...if there is indeed such rows in the table, then the bacadata.read, else something else happens...i have a few question :
1.is this the right way of login in by checking the row is available or not?
2.is there any enlightment and solution for the appropriate way to login system by using database other than the one teached by my lecturer?

I have been trying to solve this for 2 days now, every text book I own and google have been well and truely exhausted and I am still no closer to solving my problems.I have a login facility reading in user info from a main user file. This takes all info into a temp array and then splits usernames into a username file, passwords into a password file and a current score in a score file.
I have the login working fine and everything else in my program works as intended but touching up cosmetic aspects I want to add a Message box after login to say hello and display current score. This works great for the first name in the user file i.e - after login User1 welcome to the game. Your current score is 45 As intended.But the problem arises with any other users, my message comes out as
User2 welcome to the game. Your current score is 55 I do not understand where the random new lines are coming from. I have tried assigning the message as a variable and removing new line using
