I'm working on a multi user VB.Net windows application with back end as SQL Server 2008 Express. The SQL Server is installed on the intranet network drive. This is the connection string I will be using. Is this correct?

I'm using SQL 2008 Express with a multi user VB.NET Windows application. Do I have to add each user to the SQL user account? Does NT AuthoritySYSTEM work? I do not know how this works. So far I have NT AuthoritySYSTEM in the Security-Logins of the Server. But do I have to add it also in the database? In the databse Security-User, I have the following:

View 1 RepliesI'm developing a windows form app in visual studio 2008 express. I'm usin a sql compact 3.5 database on it through the program, several changes are made to database data, and so, i have on form1_closing event, a code to save the dataset back to database, something like:

But when i run my program on the debugger, the changes i mkae, don't get saved, are lost...is this a charecteristic of debugger, or is my "saving code" wrong?

I am starting design of a program that needs to run no matter if the user is logged in to the PC or not. So I will be writing it as a VB.Net Service.
As I am not overly familiar with SQL Server Express, is it possible to connect to a local SQL Server Express Instance and access the database from a VB.Net Service while the user is not logged in to the PC?

I have recently developed a back end database in SQL server 2008 R2 and attached it to a application in VB express 2010.Everything works fine and when i publish the application, it works fine on my machine, but once i try to setup up the application on another machine i get the error message: A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server was not found or not accessible please verify the instance name is correct or allow remote connections.I have read numerous forums on this saying about changing the connection string and instance name.but with being novice i dont understand what needs to be changed etc.The sql server allows remote connections, but i am unsure what else needs changing to allow the application to work with the database on another machine.
View 5 RepliesI started coding my first "real" stand-alone desktop application in VB 2008 Express. I was led into believing that using SQL Express Compact Edition was the thing to use for my database since it would reside on each PC (laptops) that I installed the program on. I created all my tables and about 6 forms and all was going well until I came to the point where I need to display a grid showing data from multiple tables using what i think is supposed to be a view. Now the problem is that CE doesnt allow views. Here are my questions:
1. Can I convert my CE database file into an SQL Server Express file?
2. Do I have to re-write all my forms that are using the database? I am planning on creating my SQL Server Express database with the same table names and the same field names, data types, etc.

I have just installed VB.NET 2003 and I am trying to manage some databases using SQL Server 2005 Express.When I try accessing the database via the data connection tab, I get the following message.

I am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth.My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. It also seems strange to me that once the days appointments have been retrieved from the database that "in theory" a client could go the whole day without having to query the database again to pick up changes - kind of scary.Some information on the data:We would probably be looking at around 100 appointments per day We capture patient name, date of birth, date and time of appointment and appointment status.What is the standard approach / best practice for this kind of scenario?
For years now I have been using access as my database. But with the SQL server Express version around I have been wondering if it is not better to use this instead of access. Note: I only develop applications for small businesses and a limited set of users. So what do you guys prefer and recommend?

All of the instrctions I have tri9ed seem to be written for someone who already knows the answers. Here's my problem.I wrote a program using Access, with one table and five queries and it works fine. Using that program as a baseI created an SQL Server database within Visual basic. Naturally I changed my code to reflect SQL rather then OLEDB.When I try to run the program I get an error message telling me that the database is not registered. When I use the SQL Server Management Studio Expres, it shows my database by give a big message that the database is not registered.

View 2 RepliesI have a Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition application that operates as a front end for iSeries V6r1. The application was developed on a windows 7 machine. Users load the application from a shared folder on a server. Currently, there are 2 Vista, 3 windows 7 and 4 XP users. All had no problem in loading application, all users except 3 of 4 XP users can run the application with no problems. However, 3 of the XP users receive the following error message when they perform any action that tries to connect to the iSeries:
System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
All 4 XP users are on same service pack
I have made a windows forms application with a user login which queries a sql server database located on a central server. It currently has one sql server login which it connects to using a connection string in the app.config file. The user login is validated by querying a username table in sql server. I would like to make this a multi user application where after the user logs in, their credentials are stored and used by the the application to access the database with a sql server login. I have finished coding a VB.Net application that has connection to SQL Express 2008 database. My question is, what steps do I have to take to make this a multi user application.
FYI:There are 3 tables in the database of which two tables contain data to be viewed by the user and one table is to insert records by the user. The former two tables will be edited by the administrator only. So there is no issue of concurrency. But the one table that is used to insert records by all users has to be dealt with.

I need not linked to things like multi-user tcp chat application, as i have looked at these, and even found no code solution, but the no code doesn't allow too much customization and hard to deal with data received to make your own commands send and receive and have events for them.

View 1 RepliesHere is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
