For years now I have been using access as my database. But with the SQL server Express version around I have been wondering if it is not better to use this instead of access. Note: I only develop applications for small businesses and a limited set of users. So what do you guys prefer and recommend?
View 2 RepliesI have just installed VB.NET 2003 and I am trying to manage some databases using SQL Server 2005 Express.When I try accessing the database via the data connection tab, I get the following message.

Please check with Microsoft to see if there is a service pack that you should apply to Visual Studio or Office in order to get support for the version of SQL Server to which you are connected.You can continue but any new object types might not be enumerated, and it will not be possible to save any objects or database diagrams that you create using the Visual Database Tools.I can not add tables or manage data fields. Does anyone know how to get the patch referred to in the message above? I can not find it via google or this forum.
I have MS Access 2007 Databases and VBA modules associated with it.I Now want to upgrade my project so as to use Sql Server 2005 and Vb.net using visual studio.net.Can any one suggest Complete details on the transfer without much hassle or data loss.?
View 3 RepliesWe are thinking about changing our current database system, MS Access 2007 front end and MS SQL Server 2005 backend to using a higher level language such as Visual Basic .Net. I wonder if this is the BEST solution for data management? Currently, among others, we have two big database programs that handle more than two hundred users and it's crashed often. That's the reason we think about changing to something that can handle these database programs effectively preferably using MS technology such as .Net.
View 12 RepliesI am asked to write a front end program in VB 2005 (that will run in client computers which running on Win XP) to access an existing MySQL database running in Linux. It is not my preferred choice, but the user have the database and server working just as he wants it, and do not wish to change, at the same time I do not wish to change programming language. Is that even possible? Can we actually write VB 2005 programs that will run in client computers complete with NET framework 2.0 to access a Linux operating database?

There were several reference to compiling the program using x86.
Go to Project menu -> Properties -> Compile tab -> Select "Advanced Compile Options" -> Select "x86" instead of "AnyCPU"
I followed the path and there was not any option to select x86 in VB 2010 Express.

I'm using Visual Basic Express 2008 to create an interface with a order database in MS Access 2007 (.accdb file). Everything is fully functional except updating the "Inventory" table is very slow. Updating around 2200 items takes almost 2 minutes and the window will appear as "not responding" for the duration if you click away and come back. Here is the process:1. Tab-delimited text file is picked by user, which includes all inventory items (not just new ones)2. Each line from text is parsed and read into variables (tempSKU, tempItemTitle, etc.)3. Old items are updated and new ones are added. -> This is the bottleneck
I used to have a series of IF statements to check which elements were changed and report them, but that was about 2x as slow. The new code is a little faster but doesn't provide the feedback I liked (update part is commented around):

I started coding my first "real" stand-alone desktop application in VB 2008 Express. I was led into believing that using SQL Express Compact Edition was the thing to use for my database since it would reside on each PC (laptops) that I installed the program on. I created all my tables and about 6 forms and all was going well until I came to the point where I need to display a grid showing data from multiple tables using what i think is supposed to be a view. Now the problem is that CE doesnt allow views. Here are my questions:
1. Can I convert my CE database file into an SQL Server Express file?
2. Do I have to re-write all my forms that are using the database? I am planning on creating my SQL Server Express database with the same table names and the same field names, data types, etc.

I am not able to add records in an Access 2007 database using VB 2010 Express Edition. I have read other posts and followed them but still I am not sucessful. I have the connection to the access database as MS Access Database, therefore it has the OLEDB connection (not the Jet 4.0). I am using the project instance in binding the text boxes to the fieldnames in the Access database. Did I miss something? I am also using Windows Vista Ultimate.

I'm at an absolute loss here, I've read so many different things.I just want to add new records to a database I created using SQL Server 2008 with SQL statements in Visual Basic Express 2008. But I can't even connect/get it to recognise the database I created.The database name is 'database.mdf' and is situated in the MSSQL/DATA folder. So far I've read I need to use this code;

Using that program as a baseI created an SQL Server database within Visual basic. Naturally I changed my code to reflect SQL rather then OLEDB.When I try to run the program I get an error message telling me that the database is not registered. When I use the SQL Server Management Studio Expres, it shows my database by give a big message that the database is not registered.

I would like to upsize the Access database to an SQL Express database. When I open Access 2007 and open database tool to do an upsize, I get ODBC-Failed.

Finally, in vb6 did not need the database linked to software to generate reports because it filled from a listview as the connection to the database do it for DAO ("C: ProSoft Billiard Data.mdb"). Now the question is as I can if I have to file a report so the connection in my software? is a bit urgent as I have to give and software and I need to do the reports.
