DB/Reporting :: Database From Text File

May 13, 2009

Sitll teaching myself how database and all that works. Need someone to make this easy program for me so i can study it better. Here. Here's what im looking for: Load Database from Text File - read a file called stationsin.csv and add the records to the database pupulating the stationID, station name and the state fields,clear Database - delete all records from the database .Load Listbox from Database - clear and populate the listbox from the database.Listbox click event - populate the labels with the data from the database for that specific location.

Create a class called dbUpdt with the following functions: Constructor - accepts the file name of the database and stores it in a class variable. Opens the database and connection. Query - accepts an SQL command and executes it.MoreRecords - returns a boolean variable indicating if there are more records left in the dataset getField - accepts the name of the field and return the contents of the field from the current record close - closes the connection deleteAll - deletes all records in the database addRecord - accepts the table name, the key field name and the key field contents and adds a record to the database with just the key field filled in. setDBField - accepts the table name, the key field name, the key field contents, the field to be updated along with the field's contents and updates a single field within a single record.

Writing To A Database Instead Of Text File?

Apr 3, 2012

I am creating a fault tracker AKA issue tracker. It is going to be very simple in functionality. As of right now I am using a text file as a database for the end user to store current issues.

The reason for me using a text file is that I do not know much about database programming and I cannot find any simple examples in the same usage. My question is, is it really going to become a problem as more issues are added to this file and it becomes larger? I.E using up more resources, application getting slower etc?

If so, could anyone point me in the right direction to creating a simple database application. Most examples I have seen require ask to download their pre-made database. Although I would like for the program to create a database if one is not there.

Store The Settings In A Text File Or Database?

Jan 2, 2010

I'm working on a project right now that basically prints a string to the field that has focus in internet explorer and there's quite a bit of user specified information that needs to load when the vb program loads. Should I use a text file to store and retrieve the settings or a database? I'm a new programmer and I don't really have a clear idea on when I should use a text file compared to a database or the registry to store info. Also, if I use a database like access 2007 for example, wouldn't an end user run into an exception if they don't have that software installed on their comp? Is there a universal database format? I've linked some screenshots of the prog if you want to get an idea of how much info I need to store.

Check Lines In A Text File With Rows In Database?

Mar 19, 2012

I have a text file with some call records in it. Each call record states a line in that text file. And what I want to do is that parsing to database with a 100% success rate. Due to sometimes the SQL connection might get buggy or stop or w/e so it came to my mind that I should make some function or maybe a stored procedure to check whether the requested/selected or whole lines in that text file have been successfully added or not to the database. Let's assume I have 10 lines in a text file called "log.txt" like:

call line 1
call line 2
call line 3
call line 4

[code]....

And assuming that the SQL connection to the database got stuck somehow(buggy) and it stopped inserting those lines to their respectively columns. Let's say it parsed lines from 1-6 and it stopped there, that's where I need the app to tell me that it stopped and continue inserting immediately where it stopped at to the end from 6-10th line. What am I supposed to do? The smoothest way so that the processor doesn't get overwhelmed (in case there are like hundreds of thousands lines). And should it be written in SQL as a stored procedure or written as a function from VB side.Toolkit : Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate - VB.Net language & Microsoft SQL Management Studio 2005 - SQL Database.

DB/Reporting :: Import From Text File To Database (access)

Nov 10, 2009

I am trying to import a text file to an access database in VB2008 express. The text file I am testing with is a csv file with 34,000 records. The problem is this takes 2 minutes to read through all this and write it to the database. The actual text file I will be using in production has over 800,000 records and this will take a ridiculous amount of time. I think I am doing something wrong. I have posted my code below. I am reading a record, parsing out the fields to an array, then creating an SQL statement to insert the record and executing it.

reader = New IO.StreamReader(fname)
Do While reader.Peek() >= 0
linesread = linesread + 1
