Design Approach For Utilizing Data From A Database

Nov 6, 2011

There exists a database that holds information on each planet in the solar system. The database has multiple tables. The program intends to access this data to display it to the user in a variety of manners. The program does not intend to manipulate the data at its source, though calculations on two fields may be performed to determine certain display characteristics. What is the optimal method for accessing the data?My initial approach, (read: gut feeling, no research) was to take each related row of data from the database and create an object of a custom class based on the data. So you might wind up with:[code]Then use these objects to perform whatever actions the program needed to. I ran into a lot of problems trying to implement this, so that I believe my design approach is fundamentally flawed.

First Time Utilizing A Database

Feb 11, 2012

I am not too advanced with vb.net and up until now any programs I have created that needed a database were for personal use and due to the nature of why I needed the programs, I utilized excel in the code to store the data.

Recently, a good idea and plenty of inspiration sees me currently creating a game for users other than myself.

The game will include a built in "Auction" site. I would like to add the feature to sort said auctions in several ways, (i.e by price, by time ending soonest etc etc).

I was using a simple text file to manage the Auction data which was working fine until I decided to add the above sorting feature. Now it is just becoming inconvenient and I am wasting time and computer resources managing the database.

I am not sure how things work on the other end of the program. i.e I assume that unless end-user has excel or access, they cannot use a program where excel and access are a part of the program's function, therefor the reason I used a text file as the database is because I know most end-users have .txt function.

Firstly, am I right in this assumption?

And if yes, what is the most convenient way for me to add a localized database to my program so that any user with a windows system can play my game without the need for an internet connection or any other third party software?

Some trivia if it helps:

The Auction Database is small. It will have 17 fields/columns with 250 entries/rows per field.

As Auctions end every 90 seconds or so, and due to the dynamic nature of an Auto-Bid feature as well as End-Users bidding, my concern is with updating/saving the database after every auction-related event to prevent loss of data should a program be terminated incorrectly.

Interface And Graphics :: How To Procede With An Interface Design Approach

May 18, 2012

I was wondering if I could elicit some tips on how to procede with an interface design approach. That is. What is a good way to go about establishing a "work area" where one can have multiple "floating forms" in this area. Can you have a form which occupies the entire windows desk top and the other forms "float" in this space? the "floating" forms would need to interact with each other where pressing buttons etc on them would affect other forms on the "workspace") Or what would be a good way to start accomplishing that? Or is there a better way to get the same effect?

Database - Design And Deploy A Data Driven Desktop Application?

Jun 28, 2011

I am designing a desktop application that will be driven by local data. I am trying to determine the best way to accomplish this. The database would contain about 10-12 tables if I use a database and I would imagine no more than 10000 records in any one table (but honestly 99% of users would not have more than 1000 records). I am thinking about using SQL Server Compact.

Is this a good solution? I can certainly include this in my installation, but I am just wondering if anyone knows of a better solution? If this is the best solution, how would you suggest that I create the tables upon deployment? Should I just run "queries" with create table statements in them from my vb application or include a database file or what?

Best Approach To Update A Database?

Jul 18, 2009

I am writing a program to assist Paramedic students in learning the Drugs that they have to know in order to pass their classes. I have created an Access database to hold all the information on these drugs, but not every student that will use this program will need to learn all the drugs contained within this database.

Right now I have 43 drugs in the database and still growing.

What I want to do is to present to the student the drugs and have them say "Y" or "N" as to whether its on their required list to learn. That way they only work on the ones that they need to.

Best Approach To Link App To Access Database?

Jun 3, 2011

How to link my app to an Access database - there seems to be a number of approaches. I can add in my database via the Data Sources tab. Fine if I want to bind controls and view/edit data. But is this the best approach for queries that return an answer that is a different shape to the original table? Alternatively I can connect to the database directly (connection string, etc) and run sql queries. What are advantages/disadvantages of each approach? In terms of flexibility, is the second approach best? Also, does the second approach require the database to be added via the Data Sources tab?

Best Approach For Data Manipulation?

Jul 28, 2009

I understand that there are several ways of Inserting, Updating and Deleting records in a database such as DataAdapters, DataSets, TableAdapters, SqlCommandBuilders, Parameterized SqlCommands, StoredProcedures, etc, etc, etc. According to David Sceppa Sprocs are the most preferred. Ok, I go with him on this one (who am I to challenge him anyway?).

My question is, apart from Sprocs, which of these options is the BEST for a large commercial database application and why, taking performance into account? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each option?

Best Approach To Store Node Coordinate Data

Dec 24, 2009

I have a question on the best way to store model data for my app. My app will basically be drawing a bunch of elements (lines) connected to a node at each end. Im trying to decide how im going to store my node data (as well as element data). The node data im trying to store will consist of the node XYZ coordinates and some other info about the node. The element data will consist of the node numbers at each end plus additional info about the element. There a number of ways i've been thinking i can do this. They are:

1) Store my node/element data as a Dictionary object, where the key represents the node/element, and the value would be an array of the information i want to store.

2) Create a "Node" structure and an "Element" structure to store the info i want. Im a bit worried here as my model could potentially have thousands of nodes and elements.

3) Create a "Node" datatable and an "Element" datatable, and store my info in those instead. I can see some advantages in this in regards to displaying information to the user in datagridview etc. But then again i can easily pull the required data from a method i mentioned above, and generate the datatable when required.

Not quite sure what the best approach is. Either way i do it, i will be serializing whatever object i use to save the data to disk.

VS 2010 See If The Microphone On A PC Is Working Correctly By Utilizing The SpeechRecognitionEngine Class?

Nov 15, 2011

I'm trying to see if the microphone on a PC is working correctly by utilizing the SpeechRecognitionEngine class.I'm using the following

VB.NET
Dim RecognitionEngine As New SpeechRecognitionEngine(New CultureInfo("en-US"))
'Dim synth As New SpeechSynthesizer
'synth.SpeakAsync("Microphone")

[code]....

When I run this code, the microphone runs until it detects a sound. If the room is silent, it never stops. At least so much as I can tell so far.But I need a way to detect when it can't detect a sound within a specified interval.I looked on MSDN and all I could find was a property called, BabbleTime. I can specify a TimeSpan that will time out the speech recognition, but from that, I can't determine if it was the timeout that caused the code to continue or if it detected sound.

.net - Slow Performance When Utilizing Interop.DSOFile To Search Files By Custom Document Property?

Apr 19, 2010

I am new to the world of VB.NET and have been tasked to put together a little program to search a directory of about 2000 Excel spreadsheets and put together a list to display based on the value of a Custom Document Property within that spreadsheet file. Given that I am far from a computer programmer by education or trade, this has been an adventure.

I've gotten it to work, the results are fine. The problem is, it takes well over a minute to run. It is being run over a LAN connection. When I run it locally (using a 'test' directory of about 300 files) it executes in about 4 seconds.I'm not sure even what to expect as a reasonable execution speed, so I thought I would ask here. The code is below, if anyone thinks changes there might be of use in speeding things up.

Database Application Design Recommendations?

Mar 22, 2012

The main purpose of the my app that I need your help with is, to deliver an always (or close to) up to date a list of files for the user to choose from for a variety of common purposes. For instance, opening the selected file in its native client editor application so the user can make changes. Another purposes would be to print the file, and I have others.

If nothing else (meaning recommendations for a better design that still keep my desired in mind) I'd like ideas on how to update my complex DataSet (background processing options, what's the most efficeient/quickest way to update my DataSet) as the list of files changes while my app is running and my app is designed to never close due to the long amount of time it take to load it initially.

The list must be always kept up to date while my app is running because not only the intial loading of data takes a lot of time but updates (new/modified/deleted) could potentially take too long depending on not only how much data to update/add (new files) but how efficeient my code is in updating the list. To be perfectly clear: If a new file is created then it need to be somehow (automatically preferably or manually i.e. button code) add to the list. If a file is deleted then it needs to bet removed from the list. And if the file has changed, perhaps some of it metadata or thumbnail image have changes so update the file's data in the list. All of which (new/modified/deleted) need to be as real-time as possble without degrading the server too much and without the user waiting more than a handful of seconds.

Listing all the files as quick as possible whether that be with or without metadata initially is very important because most of the time the user is going to filter (or scroll the list by typing) for a partial file name. Once the user filters/scrolls to the desired file there's a very good chance that he/she isn't even interested in the metadata, most of the time the user wants my app to open the selected file in its native client editor application so he/she can view or modify the file. The initial
load time of the data doesn't concern me as much as updates because the user can possibly do other things while it initially loads all the data as long as it not too long (more than a few minutes). From there the updates will either be automatic if possible (most desirable from a users standpoint) or the user initiated (e.g. button). Plus I'm thinking the updates might need to be done with a few different background processes (multiple threads) because I think I need one for periodic updates (e.g. every
15 minutes) and one background process for page updates meaning whatever the user has either scrolled to or filtered for, more accurately all files currently display to the user will be systematically update in the background so the user can still operate my app.

I'm currently using SqlDataAdapter.Fill to fill a DataSet object variable (which is bound [BindingSource] to a DataGridview control) to first populate the DataSet from the SQL query and then prorgammatically adds records (DataRow) for local files but please make recommendations. I don't mind big changes or starting over if necessary, I just want the best app possible based on the aforementioned criteria. I'm not sure if it complicates matters but I've also added custom columns in the DataSet for some special needs (thumbnail of files, booleans for tracking custom statuses). For the local files I'm currently populating the DataSet prorammatically (iterating a path/file string collect made by System.IO.Directory.GetFiles) since the list is first (and very quickly) populated with Vault files (which is always a far larger list than the local files) so . Again, I don't have to take this direction, make recommendations.

[OOD] Class Design For With Database Back End

Feb 6, 2010

I was hoping that I could get some guidance from some of you guys on Object Design with Database back ends. I am trying to build what could be considered to be my first full scale application, which is a student tracker (simplification). While I have a reasonable idea of how I would go about designing the classes for the system, the bit that I don't know how to do is, how I would go about getting the data to and from the database.

For example with my other applications, I have done a couple of things;

1) Gathered all the data when the application started up, creating the objects then. Then when the application closed sending the data back to the database.

2) Have the code which deals with getting the data in the specific class, so the student class for example would take only one constructor argument which would be the studentID, then the class code would connect to the database and populate the object fields as appropriate.

3) Variations of the above. I have also looked into LINQ, which seems like it would be very useful if you don't expect your classes to deal with any business logic and just data, but I suppose it would be possible to create a wrapper class that would include the business logic.

Loop/design - Looping Through A Database With Pdf Locations

Sep 14, 2011

I am looping through a database with pdf locations. The application is button click event driven. The problem I am having is that I display a pdf. If the user clicks on the button then the pdf information is inserted into a database and the loop should be taking me to the next pdf. However, this loop does not seem to give what I need. What ends up happening is the first pdf gets displayed twice. I think mainly because I display the first pdf onload, but when I click the button it agrees and grabs the first item from the database. And it ends up falling behind because its restarting the query and I cant quite figure out how to get the button to catch the first displayed pdf, or skip it entirely since I am using a welcome pdf. So on the welcome pdf that is supposed to be displayed initially the user clicks agree and it agrees to the welcome pdf instead of just skipping it. I am not quite sure how to just move past the pdf.

public sub onload()
display the welcome pdf
end sub

[CODE]...

Now if I run the code without the loop it works fine. I just end up having to run the app however many pdfs I have in my database.

query data
display data
insert data
Windows.Forms.Application.Exit()

To display pdfs I imported the com control for adobe so pdfs get displayed like this:

axacropdf1.src = my.mysettings.default.readpath & pdflocation

pdflocation is passed from a query fill.

I think I have an underlying design issue which probably precedes the loop.

Database :: CJ Date: Classic VB Wizard Upgrade Or Should Re-design?

Dec 15, 2010

Should I run a classic VB6 app thru the upgrade wizard in VS08 or should I re-design it from scratch. The database is a mess. Originally designed in ACCESS and imported to MS SQL SERVER. The main entities are e.g. ROLLER_SKATES and RENTALS. If you would like to rent a pair of roller skates you can. So this more or less comprises an Inventory system for the roller skates. Now you have 2 different skating rings. Skate-B1 and Skate-Z9, and you keep redundant and duplicate data from the previously mentioned entities in the skating ring tables as well. It's a nightmare.

At least the tables have row ID's. But no explicit foreign keys, just implicit columns identically named that "seem" to correspond to each other. But the rest of the table's attributes all default to NULL. Considering what C.J Date says about Types in his book SQL and the Relation Model, isn't it desirable to have CHECK CONSTRAINTS on attributes?
