Dictionary Or Hashtable And Iterating In Reverse Order?
Oct 18, 2010
I need to place objects of various types in a "collection" and be able to:
1) Change the value of a property on any of the objects by using it's key.
2) Read the objects in the order they were placed in the "collection"
3) Read the objects in the reverse order they were placed in the "collection"
My findings so far:
1) Collection won't work because Item property is read only
2) It seems that Hashtable and dictionary won't work because I cannot iterate through them in reverse order.
3) Stack won't work for obvious reasons.
Is there a collection like data structure that has satisfies the requirements?

In VB.NET, how can I convert the following string into some kind of key/value type such as a Hashtable, Dictionary, etc?"Name=Fred;Birthday=19-June-1906;ID=12345".I want to extract Birthday or ID without having to split the string into an array.I'd prefer not to split the string into an array in case the format of the string changes later.I don't have control over the string. What if someone switches the order around or adds another element?

This is similar to How to keep the order of elements in hashtable, except for .NET. Is there any Hashtable or Dictionary in .NET that allows you to access it's .Index property for the entry in the order in which it was added to the collection?

I'm currently on a VB.NET project and wish to use a KeyValuePair to facilitate a reverse lookup. I've found a great example in C# here: [URL], however I am having a small problem converting to VB.NET (both manually and using a translator (online carlosag)). For example the syntax I would expect in the Add method is as follows:

I have two listboxes: lstStates and lstOuput
I have cut and paste the fifty states on one box in the order in which they entered the union. I have two buttons, one to alphabetize the states and one to reverse alphabetize the list. Here is the code for alphabetizing the list:
Private Sub btnAlpha_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAlpha.Click
lstOutput.Sorted = True
[Code].....
How can I put the list in reverse abc order without using an array? I've tried a variation of the above code, but it did not work?

I'm trying to use a stack object to reverse the order of words (not letters) in a sentence. I'm fairly sure that the split and push methods are working, but I can only get the first word (i.e. the first word in the original sentence), to be displayed.
I have the following code:
Private Sub btnReverse_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnReverse.Click
Dim s As New Stack
[Code].....

Text is entered into a textbox form. Upon button click, the order of characters in the words in textbox.text string will be reversed. The order of the words themselves will stay the same. For example: "I Love Visual Basic 2010." will be converted into "I evoL lausiV cisaB .0102".

I hope that I'm not just overlooking something, but I am really struggling with working with an array. To simplify my issue: Suppose you type out the values: 1 through 5 into a textbox (1 2 3 4 5). I'm looking to convert that string to an array, so that I can reverse the order and then show the new order in the textbox.

ETA: Visual Studio 2010 VB Express edition exhibits the same behaviour.
ETA: Visual Studio 2010 C# Express edition does NOT exhibit the same behaviour.
In VisualStudio 2008 VB Express edition, I specify the following comments:
''' <summary>
''' ...
''' </summary>
''' <remarks>
[Code]....
If I compile the file and examine the .xml, I see that the comments are being included in the reverse order to what I specify ie. Part3 appears before Part2 appears before Part1.
Additional behaviour: If inline comments are interspersed between the external includes, they are all written to the xml first and then the includes (in reverse order)!
let there be an option called 'Turn off unintuitive xml comment behaviour'

I need to reverse a string of words without using the reverse function. This is what I have so far, BUT it only shows the last two letters. For example: if i type "John" it will only give me "ho"
Public Class frmReverse
Dim original As String
Dim New1 As String

I need to this without using things we haven't seen in class.

I want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

I have the following object:
countDictionary As Dictionary(of Category, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
The Class has a Enumeration Property. For the purposes of demonstration, I'll call it MasterCategory.I have been trying to get out an object that looks like the following:
groupedCountDictionary As Dictionary(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer)
The best result I could get was:
Lookup(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
From:
countDictionary.ToLookup(Function(o) o.Key.MasterCategory, Function(o) o.Value)
Which results in a IEnumerable (Of Dictionary(of Date, Integer)) for each MasterCategory value. However, I need that IEnumerable of Dictionary flattened to one dictionary with all the integers summed (total counts) for each date. I then tried to use various selects and group bys (from numerous stackoverflow posts) to "flatten" it, but my efforts have fallen short.
Current Code
[Category Class]
- MasterCategory As Enum
- Name As String etc

I populate the array on Form1_Load.When I click the button btnReversingAnArray the first time all are sorted in reverse except for Wendy and it is the last item shown. ie..(The book I am even shows an image of the list Box and their example also shows Wendy as the last item)
Richard

Jay
Harriet
Wendy
Then I do nothing else except I click the button btnReversingAnArray again and then it displays correctly.

I have created a Dictionary class (MyDictionary for the example). I am currently trying to pass MyDictionary into a function, filter it into a new instance of MyDictionary and pass this new instance into another method. When I am attempting to create the second instance from the filtered first instance of MyDictionary via Lambda Expressions and the ToDictionary Method, I am getting the following error:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2[System.Int32,System.String]' to type 'MyDictionary'. I have simplified the example and recreated it in LINQPad and am getting the same error.
Here's the simplified version of my code:

I have a databound Datagridview. The DGV is bound to a datatable of a strongly typed DataSet created using the wizard. Is there any way to re order the columns before displaying them eg: the Columns are displayed in the DGV in this other Col4, Col6, Col3, Col1,Col5, Col2
But I want to it to show as Col1, Col2, col3, Col4, Col5, Col6?
I realise that the display order followed the Column order in the database table and by extension, the datatable. I have re-arranged the columns in the Database but the Datatable still retains the old order.

I'm using a HashTable that stores information typed by the user in textboxes on a form. There are 4 textboxes on my form including, Name, Number, account representative, and total count of things added. Besides the text boxes there are 3 buttons on the form, one or adding a record, one for deleting one, and one for display the selected name from the listbox.
Everything pretty much works for me at this point, but I just have one question. When the record is input into the listbox it is supposed to display the users name he or se just entered in the name textbox. Now then, our professor wants us to use the number for the keyString for the HashTable.
That is the problem, if I use the number, instead of the name displaying in the listbox, the number displays. Is there a way to display the name in the listbox instead of the number? Once I have assigned the number as the keyString, am I stuck displaying that value only?
