View 5 RepliesI am trying to use direct sound to play a wav file, so I may animate a picture box while the wav file is playing. I have made a device object and a secondary buffer object and when I run the program I get an error message(see attached image), but after I click continue, the wav file plays and it plays every time I click the play wav button. I am using a test project to work out the bugs before I implement the direct sound in my other project. Below is the the code I am using. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? The code needs a form named form1, and a button named xPlayButton.

With a steady tone feeding my audio input jack, the VU meters jump and bounce about 30%. I can also see the problem in the byte array of the capture buffer. I am running 8 bit mono so there isn't a chance that I'm getting a byte swap in a 16 bit word. My on board sound card is "Realtek HD Audio Input", direct sound 1.0.2902.0 and XP. Here is the real kick in the head, if I run anything that captures sound using the winmm library or if I use the winmm library in my application along with direct sound, the meters become stable. No errors are reported. Although I have written this in vb.net, I download another persons application that was written in C++ that uses direct sound with the same bouncing meters. I used the VU meters in Audacity to look at my audio levels and they are stable.

I have a need to play a continous tone, say 1000 Hz, until the user responds. I'm aware of the following:
'Sound Player...plays wave files.
Dim sp as New SoundPlayer
sp.SoundLocation = <MyWave.wav>
sp.Play

I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I would like to add mic input into my application.
I am thinking of having text boxes in a vertical row. When the user speaks into the microphone the text boxes will be filled according sound level.
I could find anything that does this using the .Net framework.
Searching found many answers along the lines of it depends on the device driver", but I don't think that it's that way here.
I have a cheap & nasty RFID tag reader. You just have to open notepad, touch a tag to the read and its serial number appears in notepad (I have not tried it in Linux).
Anyhoo, how can I programatically capture this serial number in VB.net (20088 express)?
I have a external hardware that has a miniplug output that i connected to my pc microphone input. That output has two posible states, white noise or no sound at all.What im trying to do is an application that would fire an event every time there is a change from one state to the other.
View 1 RepliesWhat I am trying to do now is design a program that will play 4 different sound files depending on the position of a joystick. I am not looking for any kind of gradient to be involved. Any kind of forward position should play the file associated with "forward". Any kind of left position should play the file associated with "left". And the same for "back" and "right".

As Windows 2000 and Windows XP obtain exclusive access to Input and Output reports for keyboard/mouse devices.
I was a professional software designer using VB6. Now that I've converted to VB2005 years later, use, with pages of unrelated information. With VB6 I could use Left$, Mid$, etc to parse keyboard input into a string. For example in the KeyPress event of a name box I could use
Case "A" To "Z"
CFName$ = Left$(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelStart) + Key$ + Mid$(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelStart + CFNameBox.SelLength + 1)
When converting a program from VB6 to VB2005 the software changed the line to
CFName = VB.Left(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelectionStart) & Key & Mid(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelectionStart + CFNameBox.SelectionLength + 1)
When writing another program I used the VB.Left(), etc, but it gives me an error. So, the question is, what is the correct way to capture keyboard input from text boxes and construct strings?
Is it possible to capture the raw signal from a WiFi card in the same way you can capture the signal from a sound card? (I already found code for working with a sound card and for drawing spectrograms) I'm wondering because it would make a cool radio-type project. I'd prefer a solution that integerates well with .net (VB or C#).My basic goal is to capture the ambient radio waves and build a primative "telescope" of sorts. Using the built in computer hardware is just the easiest way to accomplish this. If you have any other suggestions about how to accomplish this goal in a different way please post it as an answer also.

View 8 RepliesI'm ready to start adding sound to a 3D game and I'm looking for a decent Free library.it would not require DX and be something like:
dim MySound as SoundLib.Sound
MySound = SoundLib.LoadSound("soundfile.wav")
SoundLib.Play3DWorld(Location.X, Location.Y, Location.Z, VolumeModifier, MySound)so far all Im finding is expensive, C#, old, or not .NET compatible.

View 1 RepliesI'm creating an application that will have 3 streams of audio. I can get 2 streams playing easy enough using DirectX AudioVideoPlayback and setting the balance for each Audio Instance. However, I need a 3rd Audio instance to play out of another output such as the Rear or Centre. An alternative would be to be able to select a different sound device in the machine to play the 3rd audio stream.

I need to get the decibel level of sound being sent to the sound card (not the actual sound level the speakers are instructed to emit via volume level)There is next to no information i can find on the net to even access sound data. Could anyone point me in a direction for this? The OS will be vista/7.

I've tried a few alternative libs such as DirectShow.Net, DirectSound, BASS.Net, QuickTime and OpenTK.Some of them do what I need to do, but they are either too difficult to use and therefore impractical or they are missing some other essential features such as Events which are required to make the rest of the application work. Would anyone oppose to me posting this same thread on other forums?I will of course post a solution if one is found elsewhere without advertising external websites.

Is there a way to generate a pure tone (e.g. 440 Hz) for a specified period of time through the sound card without using having to find or make a separate .wav file for each tone.I tried using the "Beep" function, but while it produces the tone for a specified period, it sounds broken up into a (probably 500ms) time frame which repeats with an audible space between the repetitions.

View 2 RepliesSo I am hacking together an app which listens to traffic using SharpPcap library, it reconstructs the packets from sessions using the code from TpcRcon.
Listening and reconstructing part work on their own . What I want is on each packet arrival main window gets an event so it can display the packet , and when session is reconstructed display a complete packet (I am interested in HTTP ones) . -That is where it breaks with weird symptoms: for example right now it does not stop on invoking stop listening method - the sharppcap library function hangs there forever waiting on this line of code : m_pcapThreadEvent.WaitOne();//wait for the 'stopped' signal from thread
I also had it not working and crashing in sharppcap function because I had omitted one parameter in form delegate- which makes no sense, because form delegate does not deal with packet capture at all and only reacts on "New Packet" event from my "Listener" class (which is only there to notify main form)
My app starts as module main instancing class "Listener". MainForm has it
registered as friend with event and handles even "New Packet"
Main Form:
Private Sub uiListenStart_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btListenStart.Click
aLogger.AddMessage("Started Listening")
