View 4 RepliesI have loaded two mesh's from .x files onto the screen, a map and a sprite. The sprite moves around, but because they aren't colliding the sprite goes straight through the mountains, and straight over the undulations. I have looked for a way to find the co-ordinates of a particular spot on the mesh, as I figured by finding the X and Z co-ordinates of the sprite, I could just set his Y co-ordinate to be the same as the map, and he would 'stick' to the ground... however I don't know if this is possible, and I haven't found it yet.

i think this is the right place to post this.i am just learning vb and have spent the last week trying to figure out directx. im using visual basic 2008. i have installed directx i got it to render a blank screen but i cant get it to draw anything. what i have is a program that collects gps coordinates and i want to plot them to screen. i got it to work using gdi+ but i wanted a 3d view. i want a view like a tomtom(without Map) and draw a line where i have been.
this is what i have for creating a vector to plot i think it is creating the vector ok. when i stop in debug and mouseover there is data in it (ie x,y,z Coordinates). i think it is drawing i think i just am not "looking at it"

I programmed with Bitblt in VB6 for about 5-6 years and now I switched to DirectX and VB.net. When I would make games in VB6, I would draw out the entire level into layers that were saved into memory on DC's.In DirectX however, I'm looking for the equivalent of that but cant find any examples around.I use a viewport system to follow the player along in the map, I copy only what is in the viewport over to the users screen.Image attached to better visualize what i mean.
View 3 RepliesI am just experimenting with loading images into a picture box. I have a modest size image (1024 x 768). If I time how long it takes to load some images from disk and display into a picturebox diagnostics.stopwatch) it takes less than half the time to load a bitmap than a jpeg. The jpeg is 50k or so and the bitmap about 2 meg in size. So the read time from disk would be slower for the bitmap but decompressing the jpeg is obviously the really taxing part for my machine. Nvidia cards and the like have some really fancy hardware on them so I am wondering if there is a way to offload the jpeg decompression into the graphics card's expensive gpu making the whole process quicker: faster read from disk and faster displaying of the image. I had a look at a direct x tutorial that simply loaded an image as a sprite and it took ages. I am obviously approaching it from the wrong point of view.

I have a game that I am trying to make for school, but I am having problems getting just one button to start the game and using the same button to end the game...there is a seperate button to quit the application, but all i can get it to do is to change the text on one click, then it will not do anything else when you click it again. I have searched all over the internet and it seems that no one knows how to use only one button to do this, there are tons of things posted about using two buttons to do this. I am really starting to figure out that VB.net is a POS, I would rather use Java or Ruby or something else.. Can anyone give me some help? I am not asking anyone to do my homework for me, just to help me figure this out, so that I know how to do it myself. Also, is there a way to play music in the background while the application is running, like an mp3, and then when you end the game or quit, the music shuts off?

Anyway what I am trying to do in steps:
1. The user clicks button1 which triggers the click event.
2. From the click event I call a function
3. I then pop-up a form, that has instructions for the user to read.
4. After the user has read the form he will click the "Done" button and return to the calling function.
The problem is the the calling function continues to execute. I want to stop execution of the calling function until the users clicks the "Done" button on the instruction pop=up. I know I can use a msgbox but the instructions can be lengthly and does not look good in a msgbox.
I have tried the Call method with return in the "Done" button click but I can make that work. I also tried a goto statement but I can get that to work either. In the call statement I said call frmInstruction.show() and it got there but as I said the calling function continued to execute.

I have a function where I am performing a lot number of database operations inside a Sub. The operation when called directly like:ExecProcess()
takes about 11 seconds to run.However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute.Here's the threaded code:

View 2 RepliesI am having trouble with a blackjack game I am creating. I have buttons 1 - 13 (A-K) I have 5 Textboxes which when the above buttons are pressed displays the values in the textboxes. I also have one more textbox which adds up the values of the above 5 textboxes to give your Black Jack Total. The problem I have is if an Ace (11) is in one of the textboxes and the Total Value exceeds 21 i need to have the Ace (11) change its value to 1 instead.
textbox 1 - 5 will be the card values
textbox6.text will be the total Value
I have tried......
if textbox6.text > 21 then and textbox1.text = 11 then textbox1.text = 1
This seems to work fine however it only solves the problem of an Ace (11) appearing in textbox1.text so i tried to repeat the code with the other boxes...

View 6 RepliesI have a list of colors i.e.: "1323523, 12342, 2354, 356234, 234234"Each of these numbers stand for a color. I would like it so that when there is colordialog.showdialog, this list of colors shows up in the colordialog custom boxes. This is how i am doing it currently, but for some reason the customcolors are not being added. i know for a fact that my array is good because i checked it.
