Display Reports With Non Modal MessageBox

Am writing a VB.Net app written in VS2010. This displays some reports in several forms. (Am using Crystal Reports though this is incidental to the problem). The user needs to be able to check these, then confirm if he wishes to run the update process or abort. My first idea was to ask the user to reply using a messagebox. But of course this is modal, so the user cannot browse through the reports.
I thought of other options but each seems to have problems:
- export the reports as PDFs, then display report in external Adobe Reader Window using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("AcroRd32.exe", filename).
- create a non-modal message box or equivalent. This loses any concept of program flow, so am unconvinced by this.

I am trying to show a message box when an error occurs in a modal dialog window but for some reason the message box is never shown although I know the MessageBox.Show method is being hit. The try catch block is inside of an event handler for a windows form that is being shown as a modal dialog. I know that the event is being fired and that the error is being caught but the message box never opens. I've replaced the MessageBox.Show with another form show and it works fine but I'd rather use MessageBox instead of creating my own error form. I just can't seem to make MessageBox work. Is this a limitation of MessageBox? Here is a simplified version of what I am doing:

I have a parent form, which can lanch a dialog box. A wrong selection in the box launches a message box with an error message. When the message box pops up, the dialog box disappears, so the messagebox is sitting on top of the parent form.Once the user clicks "OK" in the messagebox, the box disappears, and only the parent form remains.How do I make it so that the dialog box remains when the messagebox is displayed? And also, I want the dialog box to remain when the user closes the message box. The user should have the option to make the right selection in the dialogbox once the messagebox disappears.I tried to hunt for a property for the dialog box to achieve this, but couldn't find any.
Here is the code in the parent form to lauch the dialog box, and to also launch the messagebox, when the user has made a selection in the dialogbox:[code]Am I having this problem because all the code to launch the dialog and message boxes reside in the parent form? If I put the code to launch the messagebox in the dialog box, would that make the dialog box persistent when the messagebox is launched? I am putting all the code in the parent form because it can process the DialogResult.

I have a large VB.Net 2008 rich client database app and in it some screens take a bit to load, 1 - 5 seconds and two of them take up to 15 seconds. Right now I have a me.hide in my form load, I do my loading of drop downs and data, then do a me.show. It works decent and gives the impression that the program is quick. What I would like to do however is have a "waiting" or "loading" screen with a animated gif pop up while it's doing its data loads.
So I created a "WaitingForm" that has no border and a single picture box. In the form load of this waiting form it assigns a animated gif to the picture box. I set the form to be top most, no control box, etc.
If I call this waiting from from within my from load events as WaitingForm.show the animation doesn't work and the form only half shows (and in the wrong place on the screen). If I call this form using a WaitingForm.ShowDialog it correctly shows in the center of it's parent and displays the animated icon BUT blocks the calling form from processing and defeats the entire purpose.
How do I display the waiting form like it's a dialog box so it correct centers on it's parent and displays correctly but doesn't block the lower form from processing? Currently when I call the waiting form I give it a integer for how many seconds to display and then a timer on the waiting form counts down and closes itself. Do I need to use a worker thread and if so what is the easiest way to do this so the code is reusable from multiple different screens?

As part of my design for a re-write of some vb6 code, i've got some business rules that check the data being entered. These rules run on the business layer, but if they find any data that is incorrect, they need to display a modal form showing the 'violation' (or could be a warning, a question or some information).
So what i'm after doing is to somehow display a modal form in my presentation layer triggered by my business layer.
The only solution i've come up with is to raise an event to get the modal form displayed, catch the event in the presentation layer and display the form (all items on the form would be bound and so would display the correct information). Problems with this is that i would then have to put the code to sleep in the business layer until i got a responce from the presentation layer.

I'm using VB.net 2005, .net framework 2.0
I'm currently having a form that has a button starting a long process, with feedback into another windows textbox (call frmProcessLog).
I'm using a Background worker to laucnh the process, upgrade the status of the process and display feedback on the frmProcessLog textbox, and to know when the thread process ended up, (from the cancel button, from an error or normal termination).
the main thread process has some msgbox in it, asking questions to the operator (yes/no/cancel).
I've added the msgboxstyle.systemmodal to the msgbox call which works "ok" excpet if the operator decide to ignore the showing message box and click the cancel button on the frmProcessLog form, which is still clickable even though I supplied "systemModal" to the msgbox. this makes the msgbox hidden behind the frmProcesslog form and the process can still continue.
If I close my frmProcessLog form, I will see the previously msgbox behind it and If I end up click one of the button it will end up at an application error because the thread that called it is not existing anymore.
So I would like that the msgbox to be launched from the thread making it as if it was launched from my frmProcessLog window in a modal way.

I have a section of code in which I want to display a messagebox after a form is displayed... as the form loads. me.show messagebox.show If I don't use me.show first, the messagebox appears before the form is displayed. If I do use me.show first, the form appears, but is not always complete before the messagebox appears. Is there an easy way to poll the form to see if it is done displaying without using a timer?

i'm trying to display a random messagebox that displays a message associated with a character. the character image displays and the user clicks a button to guess the character if it is correct, one of three messages should randomly appear that is associated with that character (there are 4 characters, so there are 12 possible messages total. 3 for each character) but as it stands now, the picture box on the form displays the character name so the user doesn't have to guess which button to push. i need to remove the name from beneath the picture so only the buttons have the name and the user is forced to guess and i don't have the messages randomly popping up. only a messabebox that says correct i added a message box in the code but i can't figure out how to randomly get the messages associated with the characters to appear?

I have an array of info with each element containing a structured variable. Once the array is full of info it is passed to a procedure "DisplayStructure" which I'm trying to get display a MessageBox with the info in it, separating each element on a separate line. I can't get it to display even one element on one line. The structure is called Employee and what comes up in the MessageBox is Employee.Example or Example.Employee, can't remember which.[code]...

I'm trying to have a Message Box be displayed when the user either closes the form, or changes the tab. The Message Box should only be displayed if the data in a dataset has been edited/changed, but hasn't yet been changed.

i have 4 text box how can i display a messagebox that will prompt the user if theres any duplicate text on the four Textbox. Main idea: i just want everything that the user typed in each 4 textbox to be unique."i tried coding at the textbox that if the text box is change, that if theres another textbox with the same data i typed a messagebox will prompt. almost does it but, since i added a diaglogresult code that if i click yes the text box with the code will be change to a null object.. but since the other text box are null objects the messagebox will prompt me again..

I've created a form with several controls to specify the inputs to my program. They include TextBox, OpenFileDialog, Button and even a user control for numeric input. When the user clicks the 'GO' button, the program begins it work. Opening several files and processing a bunch of numerical data. This could take many minutes/hours with large datasets.
What I've been trying to do is have another window/form open up and send status information to it for the user to view. The info to be displayed is varied and constantly updated as the program crunches the numbers. Many many programs do just this type of activity.
I attempted to create a second form with a huge TextBox thinking I'd just write stuff to it. I called the .show method within the .click of the 'GO' button and of course the form is displayed but control of the program's execution doesn't return until the form is closed. How to I maintain execution and have a second window/form to display status?

I've been trying to build a simple vb.net app that basically displays already built .rpt reports in a crystalreportviewer. No matter how many times I try to code it, I run into problems. Some reports have worked, others have thrown errors such as load report failed, invalid path, etc.. All of the reports work when I run them in crystal.
Ideally, I'm looking to just have a menu with report names, and a crystalreportviewer where the user can click a report, and the app prompts them for parameter values.
I'm currently working with crystal 9 I believe, and vs.net 2003, or I have access to 2005 as well.

Is it possible to display different with a single a report viewer such that when I click on the button "Report 1" to should display Report 1 in the Report Viewer.If I click on the button "Report 2" it should display Report 2. Is this possible ? If yes then please provide the code.

I'm creating a report where I want to send a parameter for the number of records to display (I do not want to select the number of records in SQL) I have created a parameter field (?topN) and set the group to use this value which in design mode works well however when I try to set this parameter in vb.net code it does not work. The field which also displays the value shows the parameter correctly though.

I have a multitude of VB .NET programs that generate reports in Excel that I populate from an SQL Database locally. My boss wants me to port all these to ASP.net so that users could then access these reports with dynamicly generated results on a browser page.Before jumping onto imbeding Excel objects using ASP.NET from the code I have in VB .NET I was wondering on what kind of approach to use. I am creating reports in Crystal Reports that is integrated within Visual Studio 2008, and I noticed that some of the features are disabled. One is the ability to link tables with a Right Outer Join or Full Outer Join. I also cannot "Show SQL Query" in Crystal Reports. Is this something I can enable or do I have to purchase or upgrade?

Basically, I am looking for a method on how to preview reports from a datagrid or it can be from the access database which populates the data to the datagrid (then displays this in the datagridview) in vb.net vs 2010.I believe there are two methods using the ReportViewer or using Crystal Reports, but so far, I have no idea how to get them to work. The first idea would be favourable - using the data from a datagridview (which may of already been sorted, filter etc) and be able to produce a report on that.
