VS 2010 - MessageBox.show - Maintain Execution And Display Status On Second Window / Form
Dec 2, 2011
I've created a form with several controls to specify the inputs to my program. They include TextBox, OpenFileDialog, Button and even a user control for numeric input. When the user clicks the 'GO' button, the program begins it work. Opening several files and processing a bunch of numerical data. This could take many minutes/hours with large datasets.
What I've been trying to do is have another window/form open up and send status information to it for the user to view. The info to be displayed is varied and constantly updated as the program crunches the numbers. Many many programs do just this type of activity.
I attempted to create a second form with a huge TextBox thinking I'd just write stuff to it. I called the .show method within the .click of the 'GO' button and of course the form is displayed but control of the program's execution doesn't return until the form is closed. How to I maintain execution and have a second window/form to display status?

I have a section of code in which I want to display a messagebox after a form is displayed... as the form loads. me.show messagebox.show If I don't use me.show first, the messagebox appears before the form is displayed. If I do use me.show first, the form appears, but is not always complete before the messagebox appears. Is there an easy way to poll the form to see if it is done displaying without using a timer?

I am a beginner, working on MS Visual studio 2005. I have made a form which accepts details from a user (name , age, etc.).....what I am trying to achieve is the following:
When the user enters all the details and presses OK button, a new form or a messagebox must open, displaying all the details just entered by the user.

I am in the process of developing an application for one of my clients. I am not going into the details of the applications, but brief facts of the same. The application is divided into two tiers (actually three, but the third tier is the database (SQL SERVER) so that is not included). The top tier (or first tier) is a web application (ASP.NET) where the users shall log into the system and use the application. This web application will also access the Database directly. One important activity the users shall do is uploading excel files with various information to the server. Web Application once the upload is successful shall enter the details in the in Database about the upload along with an ID and save the excel file at a location in the server.The Second tier is a VB.NET Application which will run in the server. The application will connect the database and retrieve the list of excel file uploaded by the web application and start processing one excel file after another based on ID. The processing that will be done is very simple: read the excel file, check for certain parameters, do some calculations and insert the whole details into the database. (say some 100 records per excel file)
The server in which the VB.NET Application (Second tier) runs is hosting a serious of services and application which shall run simultaneously including the Database (SQLSERVER), web server. The Database also host tables and database for various other applications. In order to help in the smooth functioning of the system, it has been decided that the VB.NET shall do the processing activity only when the server is idle (including CPU usage is idle). I have searched the Net and found API to get the system Idle status. But the real question is how to pause the processing activity when the system switch from idle mode and continue when it is again back to idle mode. Please note that I am talking about system being idle because no other application is executing any activity except the VB.NET Application.

I have a parent form, which can lanch a dialog box. A wrong selection in the box launches a message box with an error message. When the message box pops up, the dialog box disappears, so the messagebox is sitting on top of the parent form.Once the user clicks "OK" in the messagebox, the box disappears, and only the parent form remains.How do I make it so that the dialog box remains when the messagebox is displayed? And also, I want the dialog box to remain when the user closes the message box. The user should have the option to make the right selection in the dialogbox once the messagebox disappears.I tried to hunt for a property for the dialog box to achieve this, but couldn't find any.
Here is the code in the parent form to lauch the dialog box, and to also launch the messagebox, when the user has made a selection in the dialogbox:[code]Am I having this problem because all the code to launch the dialog and message boxes reside in the parent form? If I put the code to launch the messagebox in the dialog box, would that make the dialog box persistent when the messagebox is launched? I am putting all the code in the parent form because it can process the DialogResult.

showing MessageBox's from background workers.My program is a utility that has several functions and each function is boxed in a UserControl and then placed on a TabControl on the main form. A few of the utilities are batch functions that take quite a bit of time to complete their task. In order to allow the user to use the other utilities while a batch utility is running I make use of the BackgroundWorker class. It's quite handy!
My only problem is when I need the user to interact with the background thread, usually due to an error condition. I want to be able to halt the thread and display a MessageBox to the user. At first when you just do it from the background thread as demenstrated in the code below, it appears to work fine. But the MessageBox is not actually parented by the Form. If you select the Form, it will hide the MessageBox and the user thinks that the program has stalled. What's worse is that my program has a setting to allow the user to make the window TopMost, which means that the form will always hide the MessageBox when TopMost.
Option Strict Off
Public Class Form1
Private Sub chkTopMost_CheckedChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles chkTopMost.CheckedChanged
Me.TopMost = chkTopMost.Checked
[code]....
I have thought about passing the message using ReportProgress(), but the problem with this is that the BackgroundWorker will not halt it's opperation, and there is no built in mechanisim to send a message back to the BackgroundWorker.

I am using visual basic .net 2005 win application.
My code,
Dim
coyCollect As
New Collections.Specialized.StringCollection
Dim
[code]....
i am sending list of company codes to the function. and in function i loop through to do something. if success i will return 1 if some error occures i will return 2)
If Res = 1
Then
MessageBox.Show(
"Success.",
"My App"
[code]....
My probelm, sometimes messagebox.show method don't show messagebox on screen. It will appear in task bar but we have to click it to show it on screen (looks like it is hanged but messagebox is already there in taskbar so click it to show message "success" then click ok to close the messagebox). then only we can click "ok" to close it. without clicking it my "in progress" window won't close. sometimes messagebox will appear with no problem.

What I am trying to accomplish is this: I want to be able to press the F5 key on my keyboard, while playing a PC game, to show (bring forward, focus, etc.) my program. My 3 attempts so far have failed. Any idea on how I could accomplish my goal? Similar posts on other forums say to set the form's key preview to true and use on keyPress... which failed.

I am trying to show a message box when an error occurs in a modal dialog window but for some reason the message box is never shown although I know the MessageBox.Show method is being hit. The try catch block is inside of an event handler for a windows form that is being shown as a modal dialog. I know that the event is being fired and that the error is being caught but the message box never opens. I've replaced the MessageBox.Show with another form show and it works fine but I'd rather use MessageBox instead of creating my own error form. I just can't seem to make MessageBox work. Is this a limitation of MessageBox? Here is a simplified version of what I am doing:

Is there any difference between the two:
msgbox()
messagebox.show()
Some tutorials use msgbox() some use the other messagebox.show()---I see that both can have an editable style but I was wondering why there are two.
Is it to accommodate for older programmers (who have learnt on an older version of visual basic).
So in that case which one should I use on VB 2010 (VS 2010)

My converter shows the answer using the message box. i want to have a icon on the message box and a title at this top bar. my code is this: MessageBox.Show((number * multiplier), vbInformation, "Answer").ToString()
i used that because it was stated in a vb.net tutorial website. but when i check it again, it states that MSGBOX not MESSAGEBOX.show. what's the difference within the two? i cannot used msgbox for showing the answer and i don't know why. what's the code for the messagebox.show to have a icon or a sign?
