Aug 21, 2010I'm making a cleaning program and one of the things it does is cleans the recycle bin. How do I do it for Xp, Vista, and 7? I'm on Visual Basic 2010. Also, how do I make it so that it automatically finds the username and uses it when the program deletes a folder. Right now I have it so that you need to enter your username in a textbox and then it uses that for the directories. I know it's something with SystemInformation.UserName.

Jan 27, 2012I try to compile a project with msbuild.exe I have this error :
vbc : error BC30136: Error creating Win32 resources: Error reading icon '"Recycle Bin Empty.ico"' -- The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
This icon is the Application icon which is in the same directory of the project.vbc is started with /win32icon:"Recycle Bin Empty.ico" parameter.Don't know why MSBuild can't reach the file.

I want the recycle dialog box to show that says "Are you sure you want to send X items to the Recycle Bin" I have tried the API functions with SHFileOperation and have tried the My.Computer.FileSystem.DeleteFile but i can only delete one file at a time. I do not want to delete an entire directory but rather just a selection of files that i specify just like what can happen in windows explorer.

May 14, 2009I have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

Nothing Equals String.Empty, Null Does Not Equal String.Empty?
Jun 28, 2010This must've have been asked before but I couldn't locate it. In a mixed code project (VB and C#) we were debugging some old Visual Basic code where a statement as follows could be found:
If Request.Params("xxx") <> "" Then
'do something
I considered this a bug as Request.Params could be null, in which case the statement would've become false which wasn't the idea. So I thought. I just found out, -- probably for the tenth time and I will keep forgetting -- that the following two statements are not equal, while Nothing in VB should be equal to null in C# (thought I):
if(String.Empty == null) // always false
If String.Empty = Nothing Then ' always true
Should I dismiss this as a typical Microsoft backward compatibility effort, or should I consider this a huge error in the VB.NET compiler? Does anybody know the Microsoftean opinion on this oddity?

The msgbox and end is just in there for debugging purposes. This always returns all 0s, even when I know that there is something in the recycle bin.
Add Empty Value To A DropDownList In ASP.net MVC
Jun 2, 2009I'm building a data entry interface and have successfully bound the columns that have reference tables for their data using DropDownList so the user selects from the pre-configured values.
My problem now is that I don't want the first value to be selected by default, I need to force the user to select a value from the list to avoid errors where they didn't pick that field and by default a value was assigned.
Is there a more elegant way of doing this than to add code to include an empty value at the top of the list after I get it from the database and before i pass it to the SelectList constructor in my controller class?
Have An 'empty' Date?
Feb 11, 2012I was wondering what is the best way to make sure a date is 'empty' so that, if it hasn't been set by the user, that situation is testable.
