Error From Custom Control & ToolStrip?
Jan 20, 2007
I have created a Custom control, containing 4 masked text boxes.and most times when i build it, i get a error: "InvalidArgument=Value of '-2147483648' is not valid for row position.' What is it? i searched MSDN, it looks like one of the SQL errors. How can this happen, i didn't use SQL.Edit: i fixed this tool strip problem. seems that i put visible to false unknowingly. I also have a problem with my Tool strip. The tool strip on the top works well, but the one i placed in a table layout panel, is missing from view, it only appears in Design view when i select it from the bottom strip.

There is a response to this question using C# - I am looking for a VB answer and the C# code is too deep for me. I have a custom user control and I have a toolstrip on it. I have certain default buttons on the toolstrip, but I want the user to be able to add additional buttons at design time. I exposed the Toolstrip.Items collection in a public property. I can open the collections editor in design time, but I cannot edit the collection.

I have a windows application created using Visual Studios 2005.I recently added a custom control - after I built it, I was able to see it on the toolbox and I placed it from there to my form. All was good till at some point, when I tried to go to the design view of my form that the control is on, I get this error: Could not load file or assembly 'acdbmgd, Version=17.2.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. [code]I can still run my app and see the control that's on the form, but I'm wondering what this error means? If I rem out the code behind my custom control, I can then view the control on the page again when I design the form.

I've got a dynamically filled datagrid view. When a user right clicks a cell in the datagridview, it opens a context menu, located by that cell. The context menu has two choices: A and B. I want to set the value of the cell to A if they pick A, and B if they pick B.I would like to pass the relevant cell as a field in the event args passed to ContextMenu's ToolStripItem.click. So the handler for ToolStripItem A's click event would read the relevant cell from the event args and set it to A , like this...
Private Sub A_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As Customized System.EventArgs) Handles A.Click
e.relevantCell.Value=A
End Sub
how to pass a custom event arg. Or if there is some easier way to do this? I can't just use the X and Y coordinates, because the context menu/mouse won't necessary by over the relevant cell.

I'm trying to run a Visual Basic (4.0) program that has run on every flavor of Windows so far. Using Windows 7 I get the following error message:
Can't load (or register) custom control: 'comdlg32.ocx'
This file is in the same directories as it is in a WinXP machine where it runs just fine.

I really want to make use of the toolstrip and databinding but these two technologies keep conflicting with each other. I think the root cause is something to with the fact that the toolstrip buttons don't recieve focus in the normal way.
I invite you to try the following:-
1. Create a form and put some text boxes a tool strip with a save button on it.
2. Write a query or sproc to get a datatable back and bind your text boxes to the field in the datatable.
3. In the code behind your Save ToolStripButton put some code that makes an arbitrary change to a field on the dataset (it doesn't matter whther this field is bound to a text box or not). eg:-
m_DataTable.Rows(0).Item("CommissionRatePerc") = "0.0000"
4. Put a breakpoint in the save and run the form.
5. Make some changes in the text boxes. Do not leave the last text box but rather click save while a text box whose contents you have edited still has focus.
6. When your code hits the breakpoint, query the value of the data table field that is bound to the text box you were editing when you clicked save - it will still contain the unedited value. Unless you do something about it that unedited value is going to get saved back to your DB.
We did get around this problem by explicetely setting the focus to another control on the form before saving. That worked most of the time because it prompts the text box to flush it's value back to the datatable (nb EndEdit does not work, although you'd have expected it to). However, and this is the reason I suggested you add a line of code that changed a value in the underlying datatable in step 3, if you change a value in code in this way before the value from the text box get's flushed back then it doesn't seem to matter what you do, the user's current edit is simply lost. They will still show in the text box, though, leading your user to believe that the change has been committed when it hasn't. Our final solution is that we never ever change a value in the adtaset in the code behind our toolstrip buttons. That's working but it's a pretty big restriction.

The problem is, having converted from VS 2002 to VS 2008 the designer can't seem to handle the custom controls on "my" (not original designer) app. Any time I try to copy, in particular, the custom derived comboBox control I get this error initially:
Type 'Corporate.Controls.data.comboBox+comboBoxDataSource+Item' in Assembly Corporate.Controls, ... is not marked as serializable.
I chased this error down, marking classes Serializable and private variables therein as NonSerialized when they caused a problem (which might or might not be the smartest way to attack this problem...) but I've hit a brick wall. The most base corporate derived ComboBox class is:
Namespace Corporate.Controls
Public Class comboBox
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.ComboBox
...
End Class
It's unrealistic to post all of the relevant code (I believe). The short of it is:
System.Windows.Forms.ComboBox <- Corporate.Controls.comboBox <- Corporate.Controls.data.comboBox
I just kept backtracking through the errors.At this point I can't set System.Windows.Forms.ComboBox to Serializable. I've tried marking the Inherits System.Windows.Forms.ComboBox clause with <NonSerialized()> and while that doesn't cause a build error it doesn't seem to fix the designer-generated error in the other libraries when I go to actually add, copy or even delete the control in WYSIWYG. And that is the only reference to System.Windows.Forms.ComboBox in that (or any other) corporate library.

Working with a form that has a menu, toolstrip and Crystal Viewer control. I cannot seem to get the viewer to maximize properly without hiding the toolbar of the Crystal Control behind the menu and toolstrip. I've played with the options of Dock and Alignment, as well as autosize and I just can't get it to work.So do I need to handle the sizing myself to do this and position the control where I need it?

I am using custom textboxes and I need to be able to set the Text on txb1 based on the Text of txb2. I have simplied my code to the following:
Public Class customtextbox
Inherits TextBox
Public Event ControlReset()
[Code]....
So, when txb1 looses focus, if its Text is "fried", then it sets off txb2's ProcessAlert function. I had tried to change the value of txb2 Text in ProcessAlert function, but didnt work, so I tried to get it to raise an event instead, which then tries to set the Text property. However I still cant set txb2's Text property. The Text property seems to be set for the duration of the "life" of the Event handler. When I step through the forms controls within the Event handler, the changed Text value is there, but not outside of the Event handler.

Can a custom control NEW Sub be the only one that executes when Inheriting from an existing control please?I am Inheriting from TabControl and I do not want the base New Sub called, is this possible?In other words, I do not want TabPage1 and TabPage2 to be added.A Form has an Activated Sub which runs once a Form is activated.It is a pity that Microsoft have not got such a method in the baseControl Class otherwise I could have used it within a custom TabControl.
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Activated(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Activated

We have a ASP.NET web application written in VB.NET where we build content programmatically during the Init event.We make extensive use of user controls, building them on the fly, and I now want to start including SilverLight content.Is there an easy way of embedding a SilverLight application in a control, and then instantiating the whole thing in code, in the same way as you'd programmatically add ordinary ASP.NET controls to a page?The SilverLight component itself works fine when added to a page using the <object> tag but I really want to be able to reuse it elsewhere in code.Since I'm expecting use of SilverLight to increase in our application, and the asp:Silverlight control seems now to be deprecated, I'm looking for an alternative way of wrapping the content.

What I've done is create a User Control Library (Project) and I've added a single User Control to that project. The control contains a single FlowLayoutPanel, and I created a Property on the control itself to pass the FlowDirection from the Control to its FlowLayoutPanel child.
Build, reference, component appears in the Toolbox and everything works fine, but the property on the control does not appear in the Properties window when I go to edit it at design time.

I know it's possible in asp.net to create a custom error page in a web app, by putting the following line in the web.config: <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="frmErrorPage.aspx" />
I have had to do this for my web app, since it is clearly much tidier than letting the program bomb out with it's ugly default error page. My custom error page just has the customer's logo and a brief message saying "Error has occurred. Please return to homepage"The trouble now is that I have no way of knowing what caused the error, when a customer reports it.
Is there a way to make the actual error message appear on this custom error page too?

I want to create a custom control in a dll file.
I can make this without a dll file, also inside a normal project, making a class for it and inheriting the desired base control class, compiling the project and the toolbox has the custom control.
But now I want to make it in a separate file, in a dll file. I use vb express 2008.
I start a new class library project, add the reference System.Windows.Forms to the project and add this code (this is only an example):
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Button
Private Sub New()
Me.Backcolor=Color.Red
End Sub
I compile the project and get the dll file. Then I add this file to the toolbox, but I get the error message: "this control has no components."

I'm trying to play with this: [URL]..I have no clue how to use it though.What i THOUGHT i had to do was open the project and "build" it to produce a .dll or something which i would then add as a reference in my new project. I'm unable to open the solution so i could not test this theory.

I have created a custom class, which contains a panel and a label on it. I added to this class a pcaption property, which holds the label text. This property is browsable and I can change its value.But when I drag the custom control to the form and change the pcaption property, it has no effect. Even the <Defaultvalue> has no effect. Why?
Here is the class code:
Imports System.ComponentModel
Public Class mypanel
Inherits Windows.Forms.Panel
Private panelcaption As String
[code]....
