I'm another newbie with VB (2010) so please bear with me. I am attempting to make a method that is event driven by data threads on the Ethernet port. Simply put, the method is to wait until a data thread from a "Control By Web" 5-input device sends an "information update" data packet to the application, with the application then processing the information. This application is on a private, well controlled network, with no access to the internet. I have a method that is working right now reading data packets when invoked with a timer (see code below) but I really need it to be event driven.
' this is added at the top of the class
Dim tcplistener As New TcpListener(IPAddress.Any, ip_port)
'this is added in the "form1_load" module
I'm writing an add on to an existing program through an API, but the event I need doesn't exist. How do i go about creating my own event in VB.
I'm writing a plug-in for a program called promis-e that works in conjunction with Microstation CAD platform to generate electrical drawings.I need to call a function I wrote when a new symbol is added to the active drawing, but that event isn't available in promise, so I was wondering if I could write my own event in Microstation that calls that function ?
I am trying to build a small window component, which has two buttons.
When I click on the Start button, my code needs to establish the connection to server and keep checking the status (this is infinite loop, I have a boolean global variable which is set to true and based on this loop will work).
When I click on stop button, it should stop checking (I will make global variable to false).
I have code to check my server status.
However, since it is kind of infinite loop, moment i click on start, window form is not taking any other actions, since the control not coming out of event listener of start button.
I have many scenarios like this kind of infinite loops.
How to resolve this, what kind of approch should i follow in vb.
Ultimately, what I want to accomplish is an AJAX-based messaging system. I already have a database table for messages, and an ASPX to add new messages (and declare old messages no longer relevant).
The current messaging system simply polls the server every 15 seconds, and re-pulls the current message set.
What I am looking to do is: On $(document).ready(), register an ajax callback function that listens for a server-side event (e.g., MessagesUpdated) On table insert/update, fire MessagesUpdated server-side.
This way, whenever the table is updated (or new records added), any clients listening know that new data is available and can re-poll the server then.
Ideally, I'd also like to make the new data available as an event argument (to minimize re-polling the db).
I can find references to something like this in other languages, but I cannot find any actual code examples to get me started.
Assuming this is possible to do via .Net, can anyone help get me started on this?
I'm using the 2.0 Framework. Also while I added a VB.Net tag, I can read C# reasonably well, so please feel free to post in either language.
I just have a short question about adding an destination methode as variable argument into my calling methode.
I want to send a "TextChanged" event to a special textbox. But I want to have a "variable" in my methode to add the handler to the textbox. Because it is possible to change the textbox and then I can change the handler where the "Changed Events" should be routed to.
can you replace the questionmarks below??
Dim TextBox1 as TextBox Dim TextBox2 as TextBox Private Sub DoIt
How to raise combobox_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) programmatically? Lets say i have method called ClearFields(). I want to call the event before i hit the end of Clearfields() method.
may i know how to implement a delegate method into my project> currently i am using the serial port polling method by using a timer to read from the serial port, but now i am changing the method to delegate part.i have the code for the delegate part updating to the text box control but how do i modify it to update the mainform with my program codes.
The part for the delegate code is here
'---Event handler for the DataReceived event--- Private Sub DataReceived( _ ByVal sender As Object, _ ByVal e As System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs) _
When you click on a button control on a web form visual studio automatically put in this code for you in the code behind. Protected Sub btnSave_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnFlightInfo.Click end Sub
Say for example, I wanted to call this method from another method. How would I do that? I know that the sender is the actual button object, but what is e? Here is what I have so far inside another sub. Just trying to get a better understanding of how this method works. btnSave_Click(btnSave, ??what would you put there??)
So Ive got some code thats in a public sub outside of my button.
Here is that.
CODE:
How can I call that method from a button click event?
What code goes between the
CODE:
This is obviously not entirely my code, E.G. the few errors from my attempt at implementing, however, before I even finish that Id like to know how to call that method from a button or form load, or any other event for that matter.
Why do Me.Hide() And me.visible do nothing under form loading event? Now the obvious answer to me was because how could you call a form to hide if it has not loaded. Make's sense to me. So i checked the documentation to see what options i had. If the form isn't loaded when the Hide method is invoked, the Hide method loads the form but doesn't display it. Interesting. So from what i gather here me.hide should still hide the form. Or have i misinterpreted the documentation? Because the form does still display. Neither also work under Public Sub New().
The only solution i found was under sub new was to change the forms opacity to nothing. Which works fine. But after reading the documentation on Opacity i am still left with another question regarding "Visible vs Hide Vs Opacity" Calling me.hide makes the forms visible property false, Calling opacity set to Nothing makes the form in visible. Both these methods do the required task but does one take up more memory or should be favored over the other? Just because some thing work's i have learned it is not always necessarily the best way to do something.
Method 'Private Sub trigger_Triggered(sender As Object, e As OamsIDD.VoamsWorldIDD.OamsStateChangeEventArgs)' cannot handle event 'Public Event Triggered(sender As Object, e As OamsIDD.VoamsWorldIDD.OamsStateChangeEventArgs)' because
I'm trying to construct a database driven VB.Net app that pulls a list of registered accounts from a database and displays the usernames of throes accounts in menu, so the user can select one and a new form open (where they work with it).what I have so far is the constructor for the MDI parent window.[code]What I want to happen is when a user clicks on the context menu a new MDI child form is created and the data in user is passed, however because AddressOf doesn't like passing data this doesn't work.I've looked at delegates and landa expressions but don't think either of them do what I need, the other option is to make my own subclass of the ContextMenuStrip class, which 1) handles the clicks the way I want to and 2) sounds like a nightmare. Before I launch into what I think will be a hell of a lot of work, am I missing something? is their a simple way to do what I want to do? or if not will sub-classing ContextMenuStrip work and if not any ideas as to what will (and if it will, any ideas as to how to start learning how to do that)
So. I'm making a tool for an online game called Shin Megami Tensei. In this game you can fuse Demons, depending on what family of the first demon you fuse and the second demon you fuse come from, and their levels, the outcome changes. This is unimportant though.
However, the application is driven by a database, the application consists of a Demonic Compendium (Index of the demons, including race, family, stats, levels etc.).This application is meant for usage by the community playing SMT, and here is the problem; a person without Microsoft SQL Server cannot run this application.I can't ask the community, some of which aren't very techy, to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition just in order to run this program.
You see my problem? Is there a way to get the program running on other computers that doesn't have MS SQL Server installed?
I'm creating a base class for a button that inherits from Control as opposed to ButtonBase. I'm using reflector to look at ButtonBase to make sure I don't overlook anything important and I'm puzzled with the contents of the WndProc method. There's checks in there for things like button up, click and capture changed, which as far as I can tell are all handled within the relevent 'On' methods of the class.
Is it possible to dynamically direct a particular control's event to use a predefined method. For example.I have a form which I dynamically add controls to, let's say, TextBox1,TextBox2 and TextBox3 and a module which as 3 routines, Method1, Method2, Method3. When I dynamically add my controls, eg TextBox4, I want to choose which of the 3 methods I want mapped to which event. . Dim objTextBox1 as new TextBox dim NameOfRoutine$="Module.Method2" Form.Controls.Add(objTextBox1)[code]........
When i run the application i need to extract the information about the sequence of methods or classes the application touches when any event is performed on the application.
With reference to my previous thread on Paint event handler.. [URL] I went to read up more on Paint Event Handler.. I have a button which draw out a path based on the user selection.. Below contains the drawing of the path portion of the button click event code
[Code]...
However It did not activate the paint event when I clicked on the button.. Instead, the paint event still activate even before I click on the button? So can anyone teach me on how to activate the paint event when I click on a button?
First forms project. My textbook [wrox VB 2880 Programmer's Reference, Rod Stephens] gives snippet that starts with [which intnellisense completes, except for variable names, including trailing 'paint' which seems to be the problem]
Public Class Form1 Private Sub form1_paint(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.TableLayoutCellPaintEventArgs) Handles MyBase.Paint End Sub End Class
which generates error :
Error 1 Method 'Private Sub form1_paint(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.TableLayoutCellPaintEventArgs)' cannot handle event
'Public Event Paint(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs)' because they do not have a compatible signature .
Changing 'Private' to 'Public' does not fix the error.
I'm having a hard time getting the fundamentals down about these TCP Socket classes.
When you use TcpClient, you can set the IP Address or domain name to connect to the server end of the socket. I see examples that use "localhost" as the first parameter for TcpClient. Is this just a broadcast over the network to find the server that has a TcpListener listening on the dictated port of the second parameter of the TcpClient declaration? With any IP address for TcpClient (I realize that's an option, though), how does "localhost" find the TcpListener server?
When I stop my TCP Listener by the Stop command, I always get an error because I use BeginAcceptTcpClient to accept the clients. How can I stop a listener properly?
I am trying to create a server to send clients text on request. I am using a tcp listener to accept clients then send each client to a thread in a threadpool which deals with each client's request then closes the client connection. It seems to work fine but I would like to know how it works. Using the listen loop below I cant help feeling I should be sending some values to the threaded sub. How does it know which client each thread is dealing with?
Sub ListenLoop() Looop: Client = Server.AcceptTcpClient
