Say I have a List(Of Tag) with Tag being an object. One member of Tag, Tag.Description, is a string, and I want to make a comma-separated concatenation of the Description members.Is there an easier way to do this than to read the Description members into a List(Of String) and then use the Join function?

What I'm trying to do is extract values, colors, comments, and any formulas for a range of cells in a given worksheet. The ultimate goal is convert a spreadsheet someone has been using as a database into Access tables.
worksheet.Cells(row,column).Value 'extract value WORKS
worksheet.Cells(row,column).Font.ColorIndex 'extract color index WORKS
worksheet.Cells(row,column).Comment.Text 'extract comment WORKS
worksheet.Cells(row,column).Formula 'extract formula DOES NOT WORK
The return value for .Formula is same as .Value. That's not what I need. I'm looking for a textual representation of the formula (to extract rate information embedded within the formula).

I am importing data from an Excel spreadsheet into an array. I want to search the array to find the location of each "cell" with text that contains a certain string (e.g. "MyTestString"). So far the best I can do is loop through each element and test it using CStr, but the code takes too long to execute (please assume all variables are properly declared):
[Code]...
(1) Is there a better way than looping through each element, such as a built-in function or a lambda that will return an array containing *the location of* all string matches?
(2) Would it be faster to convert the Object array to a String array rather than using CStr on each element? If so, what is the fastest way to convert a 2-dimensional Object array to a String array?
I've considered using Excel's Find function instead, but would prefer to limit the number of Interop calls to Excel.

I have data that I'm taking from an Excel sheet with the ultimate goal of displaying in a DataGridView.
Currently I am just going over the UsedRange of excel data and plugging it into a datagridview. This works fine, but can get bogged down when there 100+ rows of data.
I have also toyed with going from excel into a dataset (using the same wasteful method), and as expected it takes about the same time to load the data. Maybe use the XML from the Excel file?
EDIT:
Some Additional Information:
This is a WinForms application and the user will be picking and loading the excel file at run-time.
EDIT
The Return of Some Additional Information:
The Excel file is located on the user's pc. The general assumption is that they will be loading different files each time they use the application. [not sure if this helps, but might be good to know :)]

I"m completely stumped. I've looked here[url]... Changed my connectionstring appropriately. My dataset is fills with data. The Excel file already exists, but has nothing but a Header row. I can't understand why the dataset can't push the values to Excel. The only thing it's doing is inserting a bunch of rows. There's nothing so far indicates something is wrong. [code]...

I'm exporting datagridview data to Excel via dataset.Col 1 of my datagridview contains dates and the grid shows the dates w/o time.Once exported the dates to Excel, they are then formatted via wSheet.Range("B:B").NumberFormat = "ddMM"..The above code works fine for dates having a single digit day. For days 10 and above, the dates are shown as dd/MM/yyyy 00:00 in the excel sheet.[code]If days are single digit, month is swapped with day when writing to Excel from a dataset.

In my latest project, I'm iterating through an Excel Spreadsheet and importing the information from it into a DataSet row for row. Based on certain conditions (namely, the text in a certain column on the spreadsheet). For certain conditions, the app is to write the row into a new spreadsheet and email that spreadsheet as an attachment to a pre-defined email address.

I have a problem with the function below. If anybody knows of a simpler way to accomplish the same results,The problem that I have with this function is that sometimes, not always, it keeps the Excel process running and when this happens I can run the function again until I kill the Excel process manually.
Another problem with this function is that it is slow if the Excel sheet contains a lot of data.
And also I can't get this function to read all the sheets in the Excel workbook and put the contents of each sheet in a separate data table in my dataset.

Originally I was using Office Interop to import data, but that was a headache and a half for both me and my computer. Right now I'm attempting to load it with ACE, but my data grid isn't being populated. Once that's up and running I need to know how to use that data in other ways, and how to grab specific cells of data from that dataset. I'm using Visual Studio 2008, by the way.

VB2005. I have several DataSets that I create or grab from an external source. One example is
Dim sql As String = "SELECT TOP 30 * FROM myTable" & vbCrLf & _
"WHERE Area='YY' AND CarNum='734EP' " & _
"ORDER BY ProcDate ASC;"
Dim da As New OleDbDataAdapter(sql, myOLEDBconn)
'create a dataset and fill it with the returned data.
Dim ds As New DataSet
da.Fill(ds, "MyData")
Once I have these DataSets I then have to pump them into a specific worksheet in an existing Excel2007 workbook. The connection and interaction with Excel and the workbook/worksheet is already established and that works. But I am stuck in exporting the DataSets
into the specific worksheet.
Note that I have already scoured the web and MS Community site and all code that I have found so far iterates through each and every row and column of the DataSet and then adds that to the worksheet in a cell by cell manner. This is fine and in testing that works. But there has got to be a better way to do this. For even a moderate sized DataSet the exporting just takes a long time. 25 records with 15 columns takes about 10 to 15 seconds.
I've also been experimenting with some scratch code I found that converts the DataSet to an ADODB Recordset and then uses the xlwksht.Cells.CopyFromRecordset function to export it in one fell swoop. I haven't got this one to work just right but it seems in the end it also does an iteration through each and every record and field to convert to the ADODB recordset.

I am looking for some guidance with the most optimal or efficient way to export a dataset to an excel file. I have searched the forums and found a number of methods to do this. However, the code I am currently using is very inefficient as it is itterating through the rows and columns to create the excel file. The app I am working on needs to be able to create 50 or so excel files each with 500+ rows and 40-50 columns. This method seems to inefficient for my use

My application reads information from an Excel spreadsheet into a DataSet (ds1) which is then filtered into another DataSet (ds2) based on user-specified criteria. The information is basically telephone call logs that reflects when a phone call was made,what extension it was made one, how long the call was, what number was called, etc.When the user's "search" criteria is matched in ds1 above, the application adds the number called to a ListBox on the form. When the ListBox Item is selected, additional information (call duration and such) is displayed to the right of the ListBox. My problem is that a single phone number could have been called multiple times on an extension within the date range the user specifies and for each occurrence of that number in the ListBox, the "expanded" info only reflects the information for the 1st call to that number listed in the DataSet.
The only unique identifier I have is the DateTime field for the row (as this goes up to the second). I thought about putting it into the ListBox item, but I'd prefer that this date not be visible until the user selects the ListBox item to view the details for that call. [code]

I have read and googled a ton of xml documentation but haven't quite gotten an answer to what Im trying to do. I am trying to create an XSD document that generates explicit type definitions for fields in the dataset. I am then trying to create a sample XML document that validates against the XSD document.
This works fine inside of visual studio because I can read in the schema and the document and it validates BUT, the xml document created has no real reference to the XSD via xlmns or other method. If I want to use this xml data in say MS Excel and I try to import it doesn't know where the XSD is to validate against so it assumes it based on the values. Is there a way in my code to add the xlmns to both the XSD and XML if that is what is needed to solve this? [Code]

I am creating an app to grab data from excel and preview in datagrid. From the datagrid I want to be able to save to a sql table. I have the excel data in a gridview via a dataset. What I am having trouble with is the sql statement. I know how to insert data, but I can't work out how seperate the data in the dataset to pass it into individual Values of the insert statement. Or should it be done another way? NOTE: I is not essential that the excel data be previewed in the gridview if this would make life easier for me.
Here is my code so far:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
'Grabs data from excel sheet and stores it in datagrid.
Dim ds As New DataSet
Dim da As OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter
Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection

I have three tables, the extremely simplified versions of which are:
Practitioners:
practitioner_id :: int
name :: nvarchar
Insurances:
insurance_id :: int
name :: nvarchar
InsuranceLink:
practitioner_id :: int
insurance_id :: int
So, the practitioner table contains a list of practitioners, the insurance table contains a list of insurances, and the link table represents which practitioner supports which insurance. Now, I need to create a view which can display the information like this:
ViewTable:
practitioner_id :: int
practitioner_name :: nvarchar
insurance_1 :: bit
insurance_2 :: bit
.....
insurance_100 :: bit
In other words, the columns in the view are the ID and name of the practitioner, and every insurance that exists in Insurances (with the insurance name as the column name (there is an enforced condition that insurance names are unique)). The cells in the insurance columns will indicate if that practitioner supports that insurance. Or better yet, is it possible to use an excel-style pivot table on a DataSet in a VB.NET form?

I have seen some code out there to use an ODBC call to excel to create the file. I am wondering if someone can verify that this is the most efficient way to meet my goal. It should also be noted that after the export I will want to do some basic formatting of the sheet. Adding bold column headers, autofilters, and autofit all columns.

I'm facing a problem reading .csv file into datatable. The machine on which i install my window service ( which reads the csv ) is Windows Server 2008 R2.The error i get is : The 'Microsoft.Jet.Oledb.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine
Below is the code i use to fill the dataset from .csv file :
string connstr = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.Oledb.4.0;Data Source=" + System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(arrFilesName[iCount].ToString()) + ";Extended Properties = 'text;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited'";
OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection(connstr);
[code]....
I also looked at the other option i.e. Micorosft.Office.Interop.Excel but that also needs Excel installed.So, I would like to know that, is there a way to read a .csv file without having Microsoft Excel install on the machine.

I'm using ODBC to export tables from a dataset to an Excel file without auto-formatting Excel or even needing to have Excel installed on the users PC. This works great but I just had a request to autosize the columns and make the header line bold. The only way I know of doing this is to fully automate Excel to control the row/column/cell formatting. Does anyone know a way of doing this without auto-formatting Excel?
