File Associations - Default Mail Client Not Properly Installed
Jul 25, 2009
I have my setup and deployment project is set to make the mailto: links refer to my program. It works with Firefox no problem. Internet Explorer complains that "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed." The mailto link shows as being associated to my program in the windows default programs thing.
I have a piece of code which sends email with an attachment from my application. The code uses MAPI to send the email. It opens up a new email message so the user can add to the email message, and then the user clicks send. The code works fine. However there is one small problem. The email that the code opens, is always in Microsoft Outlook. Sometimes the application's user has Outlook Express set up as the default client, but my application always opens the new email message in Microsoft Outlook. (Outlook 2003. In the one user's machine that has Outlook 2007, everything works fine and the email opens up in Outlook Express.)As I searched for a solution, I saw this problem posed many times in various places on the Internet, with no solution (or none that worked). I did try several suggestions which involved creating registry settings and registering some dlls.
how to send mail via .net. However I do not seemlessly want to send the mail. I want a new mail message to open and I want to attach a file that i will export from crystal. So in short, It should use outlook on the client pc, open new mail, and add attachment. The user can then type custom message, and type email addresses.
We have developed one tool in VB6. It's working fine in few PC and some PC we are getting an error msg like "Run time error 3706 Provider cannot be found, it may not be properly installed"
I have a class IContact with various properties some of them being lists of other class objects. I have a public list of IContact. Can I write Contacts as List(Of IContact) to a file as opposed to a bunch of strings I then have to parse? I know visual studio has some data tools in the toolbox and a set of data classes, but I don't know how to use them or if they can help me write all this data to a single file.Second part of the question: I have associated .cms files with my program. But if a user opens the file, what code should the program run through in an attempt to deal with the file? This file is going to contain data that the program needs to read, how do I tell it to read a file when the program is opened vicariously because the file was opened?
I need to clarify these questions, I seem to have poor questions a lot of the time cause I don't get a lot of responses, and when I do get responses, they don't seem to answer my questions, I ask followup questions and then the thread will die after that usually..I seek not answers, but understanding, that I may not solve, but learn. What good is a fish without the skill to catch it?
I have an MDI Windows Forms application (.net 2008) that allows the user to associate various file types with the application. I currently do this with a registry entry something like this, that causes the application to load and access the file name via the command line:[code...]
In the pre-.net version of the application, I used DDE (ddeexec in the registry). If an instance of the application was executing when a file was double-clicked in Windows Explorer, it would open the file without starting up a new instance of the application.
Now that DDE has been deprecated by Microsoft, what is the best way in .net for an executing MDI application to open an additional file when the file is double-clicked in Explorer, as opposed to starting a new instance of the application?
I know there are allot of toppics about this subject, but i cannot find really what i need.
i need a file associations with settings.. so when you click for an example: "PC0210.config" it will start my program with some settings inside the "PC0210.config" File.
Lets say my program needs to give a message box with the PC name when you click the PC0210.config file.
that inside the PC0210.config file is something like: pcname="testPC"my program popsup with: testPC
How would one go about associating a file type with his application? I know how to read the command line arguments but I am not sure how I can "register" the file extension with Windows. Furthermore, my application is a stand-alone executable, so how would I keep Windows up-to-date on the location of my program?
I did a fair amount of searching and all I could find were old articles that didn't explain everything. How can I create file associations to a stand-alone executable in VB.NET?
Under Project Properties, Publish, Publish Options, File Associations, you can set what file associations your project uses. What should I set for ProgID?
I could find any results on file association. The only one that seemed to be straightforward was for a text file. I'm making a webbrowser. This is the code I was provided for a text file association:
Imports RegistryActions.FileAssociation Public Class HelloForm Private ftHello As New FileType(".Hello", "Hello", "Hello World Adjective File", "C:World.ico")
[code]....
How on earth do I make a file association for an html/htm file?
My name is Stefan and i would like to know how can my app see that it was started up on a file-associated DoubleClick?I know how to associate the files using the "Registry" method and the "Publish" method.
what happens if I use a font in my WinForms app that isn't available on the target machine - does it use a font in the same family or just Sans Serif or something else?
I was created ".cta" file for my project that file was loaded into my Richtextbox control so I created File associations option into registry all was done but I just double click that file in explorer, my application will run but that file was not loaded into my Richtextbox control. How can I do that...
I have to create a application which starts when a mail client (such as a webmail) starts and keep listening to incoming mail and process on the incoming mail?
I developed a ClickOnce application using MS Chart Controls. It works fine for the charting part. But, as Chart Control needs to be installed beforehand (with admin rights and not with classic ClickOnce deployment), I need to detect if the component is available on the machine. So I tried to create a new Chart and to handle the possible Exception but it seems it is not possible to catch it (too low level Exception?) :
Try Dim oChart as New Chart Catch ' Some user-friendly message to ask the user to contact the helpdesk End Try
This code is never executed: I get a unhandled Exception as soon as I enter the event this code is in. See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

I am using VB Express 2005 because the machines my applications are running on are more likely to have .NET 2.0 installed. Is there a way to use VB Express 2008 but stop the client asking for .NET 3 3.5 (especially as the functions I am using are pretty basic!)?
i have 8 new custom file types which go with my app, i can set them to open with me app easily using this code on a button:[code]But im a little stuck on what to change in that, ive made certain all my new extensions are unique and i have all my icons for each new file type made, i just need to be able to set them.
I am trying to introduce "user.config" corruption handler in my application. The approach I am following is that when the first time my application access user setting variables, I put that in try catch block and if the file found corrupted i simple delete it and reload setting variables. but I dont know why reload functionality is not working properly. What my understanding about reload is that it will reload all user setting variables to its default value, but in my case even after reload() everytime appliction access user setting it generates exception. My code snippet is as follows:
Try test = My.Settings.Mysetting Catch ex As Configuration.ConfigurationException
I have created an application in VB.Net 2010 and am using an Access 2010 db. Connecting to this DB I use the Provider= Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 and it works fine on my machine. This was a recent update from using Jet as that provider was having issues on client Win64 computers that had Access 2007 or 2010 installed.Basically my issue is that I get the error that Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 is not installed when I try to run the application on the client.
The problem however, is that I do not want ask the users to install Data Access Objects in addition to .Net 4.0. I want a simple install that they can run and upgrade to .net 4.0 if they need to. The above thread states a solution as "You can also consider to use ADO.NET object in System.Data.OleDb namespace to connect to the Access database instead of the Provider. In my opinion, this is the best choice since the ADO.NET provides you the powerful data access objects." This sounds like a great option, however I cannot find any way to install the ACE dll and get it to work on the client.what do I need to include in the client installer to get my application to run on systems without Access installed? Do I just include the ACEODB.dll or is there something else that needs to be done?
How would that work? I can't find any documentation in the MSDN.you know how when you open a txt file it opens up notepad and loads the file? how does the whole 'loading the file' thing work in VB?
I am teaching myself vb.net and wanted to change this code to have an embedded mail.boby from a text file instead of the file attachment. Code spippet below and where I need help is mail.Body = ("tracertALL.txt") that just puts the name of the file NOT the contents of the file. This code is a CMDWrapper that runs a batch file and I want the contents of a trace route that is pipe to a file >> tracertALL.txt .
I publish some of my projects on my website, but i want to make something different, i want to make a simple mail client on visual basic 2008 express edition.
I have recently published a simple text editor(just as an exercise). the editor has been published using Microsoft Visual Basic Express. Once the program is installed i wanted to make it a default opener for .txt files, so i clicked openwith ->Choose default program and then i was asked to show the location of the .exe. It seems like the .exe of my installed program doesn't exist. where the .exe is on a windows7 or tell me of another way of makeing that program the default opener.
MVC3, VB.NET. I have a function in my app that is supposed to use a html file's contents for the email body. However what I have so far is failing at the mail.body = file.readalltext(_body) line..
I am deploying my application on a 64 bit windows 7 system (setting the platform property to x86) , after the installation process the app needs to set its connection string in the config file; and this is where I am having issues, the app is not able to write to the config file if/when its located under the program files directory (no admin privileges??), the app works fine when installed on a public folder. Please let me know how to give admin or write access to my app when its installed to the default program files directory
I'm developing an application and when the application is open, I need to handle the mailto protocol. I'm thinking the best way is have the app change the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTmailtoshellopencommand registry key when it opens and change it back when it closes.
